Hunter: We need to be firing on all cylinders

Show/hide article…

Saints travel north to face the foxes in Premier League 2 action, and Hunter knows the importance the game could have on the league standings.

“We’ve prepared well,” he started.

“Obviously the table is very tight – they are two places below us – so we will need to be firing on all cylinders.

“We’ve had a really young squad recently and there’s been a lot of good individual performances; they are learning in difficult circumstances, so we just need to keep going.”

Saints suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur in their previous league outing.

But despite the result, Hunter believes there were plenty of positives to take away from his side’s performance in Stevenage.

“We’ve been playing in fits and starts,” he continued.

“We need to work on doing the basics well and consistently. We can’t defend how we did in the first half against Spurs and then be much changed for the second.

“We want an elongated period in the game where we do the simple things and do them well. Every time we have done that this season we have put in a good performance and invariably come away with points.”

Premier League goal difference table: Where does your team place?

Show/hide article…

WHERE would your team place in the Premier League table if it was based solely on goal difference?

Goal difference could become hugely important in the final standings.

Manchester City won the title back in 2012 thanks to the difference between the amount of goals they scored and conceded.

And plenty of teams have been relegated because of it too.

So how does your side’s goal difference compare to other teams in the English top flight?

Le Tissier: Some Saints fans have been “spoilt” by recent successes

Show/hide article…

SAINTS legend Matt Le Tissier believes some of the club’s fans have been “spoilt” by seven years of continual improvement.

From the start of the 2009/10 League 1 season to the end of the 2015/16 Premier League campaign, Saints’ league finish improved.

In the space of seven seasons, the club jumped from seventh in the third division to sixth in the top flight.

Now, following a sixth league loss in seven matches against West Ham at the weekend, Saints are now in the bottom half of the Premier League and in danger of being sucked into a relegation battle.

Le Tissier tweeted after the 3-1 home loss to the Hammers: “Think some fans have been spoilt in recent years. Couldn’t keep finishing higher every year, more adventurous play would be nice tho.”

Later, in another tweet, he called on the fans to continue backing Claude Puel’s under-performing side.

“Many a poor season in my day was helped by the fans lifting the team even when we were playing poorly. U all have a part to play #AsOne

Saints fan Ben Mould tweeted Le Tissier to say: "St Mary’s has got so quiet lately it’s embarrassing. We can barely get through 1 bit of “oh when the saints”!

Le Tissier tweeted his reply: That’s such a shame, sometimes you don’t realise how much a great atmosphere can lift a player."

Is Le Tissier right? Have some Saints fans been “spoilt” by recent successes? Comment below.

Loan Watch: Gallagher strike downs QPR

Show/hide article…

The striker’s 11th goal of an impressive campaign came just one minute into stoppage time to clinch a vital three points.

The visitors thought they had opened the scoring when Conor Washington’s header bounced down off the crossbar, but officials deemed the ball hadn’t crossed the line and Rovers took full advantage.

Elsewhere in the Football League, Jason McCarthy played the full 90 minutes as Walsall recorded a 2-1 home victory over Northampton Town.

John-Joe O’Toole had given the visitors the advantage after 23 minutes, but the Saddlers rallied in the second-half and goals from Matt Preston and Erhun Oztumer sealed the points.

Paulo Gazzaniga kept a clean sheet as Rayo Vallecano won 1-0 against Almeria in Segunda Division.

An own goal from Fran Vélez on 7 minutes proved to be the difference between the two sides.

GOSSIP: Saints eye free agent Caceres to solve defensive problems

Show/hide article…

SAINTS could turn to free agent Martin Caceres to solve their defensive problems, according to various news outlets.

The former Juventus centre-back has been unattached since last summer, and recently rejected a contract offer from AC Milan.

The 29-year-old passed a medical at the San Siro, but failed to agree personal terms and is now reportedly heading to St Mary’s for talks.

Caceres went on trial to Crystal Palace in the January transfer window, but Selhurst Park boss Sam Allardyce signed Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho on loan instead.

The 68-capped Uruguayan has also reportedly attracted interest from West Ham and Sunderland – although his £100,000-a-week wage demands deterred several clubs.

Saints could now look to the former Barcelona man to help solidify their wobbly defence in Virgil van Dijk’s absence through injury.

Having sold off Jose Fonte in the January transfer window, Van Dijk’s ankle problem has left Claude Puel’s men very short at the back, with perennial back-up Maya Yoshida and youngster Jack Stephens now first choice in central defence.

The defensive frailties were all too obvious on Saturday, as Saints lost 3-1 to West Ham at St Mary’s – their sixth defeat in seven Premier League games.

The problem has been amplified with Saints conceding nine goals in their last four home games, having let in just five goals in their first eight league games under Puel at St Mary’s.

Caceres has been without a club since last summer after his contract at Juventus expired.

His career started in his homeland, Uruguay, at Defensor, before moving to Spanish outfit Villareal in 2007.

He spent a season on loan at Recreativo, before leaving parent club Villareal for Barcelona.

Caceres’ game time was limited at Barca because of injury problems and being behind Rafael Marquez, Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol in the pecking order at the Camp Nou.

Subsequently, he left on loan for Juventus and then Sevilla, who he eventually joined permanently in 2011.

Los Rojiblancos then sent him back to the Italian giants in a second loan spell, before he signed a contract with the Old Lady in 2012.

The 5ft11in defender won five Serie A titles with Juventus, as well as the Coppa Italia twice.

With Saints failing to bring in cover during the transfer window, having decided against a move for Spartak Moscow’s Serdar Tasci, Puel has recognised that his team are short on options.

The St Mary’s chief has mooted the possibility of moving Ryan Bertrand to centre-back, with Yoshida, Stephens and Florin Gardos, who has recently returned from a two year injury layoff, the only other available options.

Caceres’ match fitness may be an issue, with his last competitive game more than a year ago.

However, with the January transfer window now close, a free agent of the calibre of Caceres may well be enough to entice Saints in to a deal.

Southampton considering deal for defender Martin Caceres - sources

Show/hide article…

Southampton are considering a move for defender Martin Caceres, who is a free agent, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC.

Former Juventus player Caceres is looking for a new club after turning down the chance to join AC Milan.

Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani told Mediaset that Caceres had “passed all of the medicals, but we could not agree personal terms.”

Caceres has been without a club since leaving Juve last summer, and the 29-year-old also came close to joining Crystal Palace last month.

Southampton boss Claude Puel is keen to fill the void left by Jose Fonte’s departure and Virgil van Dijk’s injury, with the club down to the bare bones for central defenders.

Southampton have lost six of their last seven games in the Premier League and Puel is considering offering Caceres a short-term deal to bolster his ranks.

Report: Saints 1-3 West Ham United

Show/hide article…

It had looked set to be a dream debut for Manolo Gabbiadini after he had slammed the ball beyond Darren Randolph to give Saints an advantage on 12 minutes.

But the visitors’ response was emphatic, and a goal two minutes later from Andy Carroll was followed up by a Pedro Obiang effort on the stroke of half-time.

Despite a bright opening to the second-half in response, Mark Noble’s free-kick extended the Hammers advantage further to wrap up the points.

Claude Puel made four changes to the side that were defeated by Swansea City, as Gabbiadini, Sofiane Boufal and James Ward-Prowse all came in.

There was little between the two sides in the opening exchanges, with Carroll and James Ward-Prowse having early efforts.

But on 12 minutes, debutant Gabbiadini lit the blue touch paper for a frenetic few minutes at St Mary’s, when he latched on to an incisive through ball from Jay Rodriguez, before smashing the ball past Darren Randolph from a tight angle.

Two minutes later, Obiang slid the ball into the run of Andy Carroll, who levelled the scoring with a powerful finish.

In an increasingly open contest, Aaron Cresswell collected a cross at the back post before firing a controlled left-footed shot straight into the arms of Fraser Forster.

And the visitors went ahead when Gabbiadini flicked Robert Snodgrass’ outswinging corner away from danger as far as Obiang, who saw his low drive go through a crowd of bodies and arrow into the corner.

Ward-Prowse’s turn and shot from the edge of the box forceed a smart save from Randolph but Puel’s men trailed at the interval.

At the break, the Saints boss made his first change when Nathan Redmond was introduced for Rodriguez, which almost paid dividends instantly.

The winger was hauled down on the left by Cheikou Kouyaté and Ward-Prowse’s curling free-kick almost caught out Randolph at his near post.

On 52 though, it was a free-kick at the other end that proved decisive, as Noble’s inswinging effort took a slight deflection off Steven Davis and went all the way in.

Gabbiadini almost had a second of the afternoon when Boufal’s dinked cross was headed to him by Kouyaté, but he couldn’t find a finish.`

With 20 minutes to go, Cédric’s run down the right was picked out well by Davis, and Ward-Prowse’s header was tipped over superbly by Randolph.

Further efforts fell to Davis, Cédric and Ward-Prowse but it was not enough to find a way back into it.

HAVE YOUR SAY: What would you prefer Saints do this season?

Show/hide article…

SAINTS are seven points from the relegation places in the Premier League, but are also heading to the League Cup final at Wembley.

It is certainly a season of ups and downs so far.

It seems increasingly likely that Saints will not improve on the sixth place finish they achieved under Ronald Koeman last term.

Having improved their league finish year on year for the past six seasons, this campaign is unlikely to yield another improvement at this stage.

However, with the League Cup final on the horizon, there is a chance of major silverware and a huge opportunity to make this season under Claude Puel a success.

And that leads us to this question…

What would you prefer?
