Saints held to frustrating stalemate

Show/hide article…

A subdued first period made way to a far more open second, as Saints built attack after attack, only to be denied by a combination of profligate finishing and fine goalkeeping from England’s Jack Butland.

Sofiane Boufal spurned the best of the chances, heading wide with his very first touch after coming on as a 75th minute substitute.

Mauricio Pellegrino made one change to his starting line-up following the last-gasp 1-1 draw at Burnley last time out.

Impact substitute Josh Sims was rewarded for his Turf Moor cameo with a first Premier League start of the season – and only the second of his career – in place of fellow Staplewood graduate James Ward-Prowse on the right flank.

It was Saints who started on the front foot, forcing the visitors to defend a number of crosses, but were left temporarily exposed when chief danger man Xherdan Shaqiri led a Stoke counter-attack.

It was two on two and Shaqiri liked those odds, but partner in crime Mame Biram Diouf slipped at the vital moment and the chance came and went.

Diouf’s afternoon would come to an abrupt end midway through the first period, unable to continue after landing awkwardly under a high ball.

After what seemed like an eternity, Diouf walked off clutching his arm, and on came Erik Pieters – a left-back for a striker – as Paul Lambert opted for a tactical switch rather than introducing former Saint Peter Crouch in a straight swap.

It had not been a first half to live long in the memory, but Sims brought St Mary’s to its feet with a brilliant turn to spin away from Bruno Martins Indi on the halfway line.

All of a sudden Saints could play their own game of two on two, with Guido Carrillo making a run to Sims’s right, but back came Martins Indi at a rate of knots to recover the situation.

Carrillo was soon in the wars when Geoff Cameron took him out on the edge of the box. Referee Anthony Taylor played on, and when Dušan Tadić was crowded out, might have preferred the free kick in shooting range. Instead they lost the ball and Cameron was retrospectively booked.

The best chance of the half fell the way of Badou Ndiaye just before the interval. The midfielder had already chanced his arm a couple of times from long range, before Shaqiri floated a delightful ball over the top for Ndiaye to head goalwards.

It was only a deft touch, but enough to redirect the ball low to Alex McCarthy’s left, and the Saints keeper needed laser sharp reactions to flick the ball around the post for a fine save.

Saints needed more intensity and Sims looked the most likely to provide it. Seconds after the restart, Shaqiri fell but did not get the free kick and Sims took off down the left, racing into the box only to be denied by the legs of Butland.

When the resulting corner was only half-cleared, Mario Lemina drove a shot into the turf that bounced just a couple of yards wide.

Sims was involved again when Carrillo flicked on a left-wing cross, Cédric cut the ball back and Sims forced another low save from Butland, who this time held on with his hands.

But Saints nearly suffered at the hands of a sucker punch when Crouch, brought on at half-time, headed on to Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who briefly escaped the clutches of the home defence before Jack Stephens crucially intervened.

The game was opening up, as Pellegrino sent on Manolo Gabbiadini for Dušan Tadić and switched to 4-4-2.

Another chance fell the way of Cédric, who thundered a 20-yarder that Butland spectacularly parried to safety, before Nathan Redmond sent his former Birmingham teammate flying to his left to keep another goal-bound shot at bay.

With 15 minutes left, Sims was sacrificed for Boufal, with Saints desperate for someone to unlock the door.

With his very first touch, Boufal should have been that man. Redmond, now on the right, sprinted down the wing and crossed perfectly for the Moroccan, whose header from seven yards dropped agonisingly the wrong side of Butland’s post, with the keeper for once rooted to the spot.

Pellegrino’s last throw of the dice was to introduce Shane Long for the final ten minutes, but another Butland save from Cédric’s daisy-cutter spelled the end of Saints’ hopes of victory.

Pellegrino disappointed with Stoke stalemate

Show/hide article…

The manager admitted his team were not sharp enough in the first half, but responded by producing a dominant display after the interval.

Despite creating a host of chances, Saints could not make the breakthrough.

“Obviously we are disappointed, because in the second half we did everything to try and win the game,” said the boss.

“Sometimes the opponent was fresher in the first half. They were really aggressive and we couldn’t find spaces to move the ball quicker.

“Everybody realised that we had to play one step forward in all different aspects – in attack, in defence and in transition.

“We had to react better and I think we did, but to learn for the future we have to do that from the beginning.

“In the second half, I think we created some clear chances, but in the Premier League every game is difficult and football is about efficiency, not what you deserve.

“You can talk about many reasons, but the reality is we couldn’t win.”

Southampton 0-0 Stoke: Saints set new record in home draw

Show/hide article…

Southampton failed to ease the pressure on manager Mauricio Pellegrino as their lengthy wait for a Premier League home win was prolonged by a goalless draw with relegation rivals Stoke.

Saints’ last victory at St Mary’s came more than three months ago and they wasted another chance to boost their survival hopes after failing to break down the second-bottom Potters.

Pellegrino’s men dominated the second period but saw Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland keep out efforts from Josh Sims, Cedric Soares and Nathan Redmond before substitute Sofiane Boufal squandered an excellent opportunity to earn the three points.

It is now a club record eight Premier League games - stretching back to November 26 - since Southampton tasted success at their own stadium and they remain a point above the bottom three after being booed off at the end of both halves.

They also could have lost this one as Badou Ndiaye and Maxim Choupo-Moting threatened to score breakaway goals for Paul Lambert’s stubborn visitors.

While both teams were desperate for a win, they would also have been rightly concerned about the ramifications of losing this fixture.

It resulted in an nervous opening period devoid of any real attacking intent.

The main talking point of the first half was a serious-looking injury suffered by Stoke forward Mame Biram Diouf.

He hobbled off in pain clutching his shoulder to be replaced by Erik Pieters with just 23 minutes played having been clattered in the back by Saints defender Wesley Hoedt.

It appeared to be an obvious act of revenge following an innocuous-looking clash between the pair in Southampton box in the opening minutes which left Dutchman Hoedt holding his face.

Stoke boss Lambert had kept faith with the starting XI which earned a point at Leicester last week, while Pellegrino made one alteration, handing young winger Sims - who has recovered from a serious knee injury - his first league start in more than 15 months.

Sims added extra energy to Saints’ team but, after bursting past Bruno Martins Indi and into the penalty area nine minutes before half-time, he hesitated slightly, allowing the Holland defender to block his cross-shot as Guido Carrillo waited in the middle.

Potters midfielder Ndiaye, who earlier escaped a card for a bad tackle on Mario Lemina, came closest to putting the visitors ahead when his flicked header was tipped past the left post by Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

Saints showed more purpose after the restart and England keeper Butland did well to deny Sims, Soares and Redmond with a string of fine saves.

Stoke, who introduced former Southampton striker Peter Crouch at the interval, remained a threat on the counter-attack and a last-ditch challenge from Jack Stephens was required to divert over Choupo-Moting’s close-range attempt.

Pellegrino replaced Sims with Boufal 14 minutes from time and the Moroccan should have made an immediate impact, only to head wide from close range when unmarked as the game ended level.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino unconcerned about his future after Stoke draw

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino insists he has no concerns about his future as Southampton manager after their poor home form continued with a goalless draw against fellow strugglers Stoke.

Saints dominated the second half at St Mary’s, but have now gone a club record eight Premier League home games without success stretching back more than three months.

They remain a point above the relegation zone after substitute Sofiane Boufal wasted their best opportunity by heading wide when unmarked, while Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland produced a string of fine saves to deny Josh Sims, Cedric Soares and Nathan Redmond.

Asked about his position, Pellegrino replied: "For me the most important thing now is Southampton, more than me.

"Southampton is more important than the players and the manager. It’s amazing that we’re part of something that is more important than everyone.

"We are obviously disappointed with the result. Frustrated? No. Frustrated is when you give up. In the second half we played much better than them to try to win and I think we deserved it.

“You have to score goals, we couldn’t do it. We have to use the second half as a reference for the future.”

Southampton’s disheartened supporters booed their team off at the end of each half.

They have seen the club win just three league games on their own pitch this season, with the most recent of those victories coming against Everton on November 26.

“Obviously we understand the feeling of the fans,” added Pellegrino. "We are working really hard to try to turn this situation up.

"We have to do away to get those points that we couldn’t get at home. We have to continue doing the job that we did in the second half.

"Our fans we understand because Southampton we are everybody - the players, the fans, the board, the staff, everybody.

“Now we have to be all together pushing, giving energy to try to be as strong as we can until the end.”

Sims on re-entering the fold

Show/hide article…

Saints probed, but were frustrated for large chunks after dominating possession and chances created, yet couldn’t find the telling breakthrough, as Mauricio Pellegrino’s side were forced to share the spoils.

One of Saints’ brighter sparks in attack, Sims remarked that his inclusion was pleasing on an personal note, but ultimately the result meant that his day ended in disappointment.

“Mixed emotions really, for me personally I’m happy to be back in the starting XI,” the youngster remarked. “It’s a real shame we couldn’t get the result.

“Everyone will agree that first half we weren’t good enough, the tempo wasn’t there and we were sloppy. But it was completely different in the second half, we were pressing high and were faster on and off the ball.

“We created a lot of opportunities, and it’s a shame we didn’t do that from the start. We’ve got another game coming up [against Newcastle] that we’re going to have to correct things.

“We should have scored, considering the amount of opportunities we had, so we have to take that in to the next game and change that feeling of disappointment in to positives.”
