Southampton vs Stoke LIVE: Premier League updates from St Mary’s
Show/hide article…
Stoke City manager Paul Lambert has no fears over his team’s predicament in their battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League, with the Scot saying he has confidence in his squad’s ability to get results.
The 19th-placed club have improved their form recently, recording three draws and a win in their last five games to move within a point of safety, coming close to beating Leicester City last weekend before settling for a 1-1 draw.
Lambert lamented the individual errors that denied Stoke victories in their last two matches against Brighton and the Foxes but the 48-year-old is pleased with his team’s overall form.
“I don’t have any trepidation, any fear going into games. I think we are going to go in and win,” Lambert said. "I think the way the lads are playing shows that they are more than capable…
“Our form is really good. I can’t fault the lads. We are playing ever so well. The last two games we have had individual errors. We should have picked up six points but that happens.”
Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino said: "We have to put everything on the pitch, try to finish empty with our energy and give 100 per cent.
“We need togetherness from every single fan, from every single player, to be together, to try to play our football and to be brave in character.”

Southampton 0-0 Stoke: Relegation rivals play out drab goalless draw
Show/hide article…
Southampton and Stoke played out a goalless draw that did nothing for either side’s survival hopes.
Both teams remain in relegation danger after failing to find a breakthrough in this St Mary’s six pointer.
The result was a marginally better one for Paul Lambert’s Stoke side who survived a second-half battering thanks to a string of saves from England stopper Jack Butland.
But they stay second bottom while Southampton dropped a place to 17th, outside of the drop zone by just one point.
The first half was especially frustrating for both sides.
Xherdan Shaqiri and Mame Biram Diouf got their wires crossed and messed up a two v one breakaway that ended with both players exchanging words before Diouf was forced off with a shoulder injury.
Badou Ndiaye also spurned a free header chance for the visitors.
Pedestrian Southampton offered little in return and their lack of quality was summed up when the home fans sarcastically cheered Josh Sims getting their first effort, a tame, hopeful volley, on target just before half time.
The home side finally started playing with a bit of urgency after the break as they laid siege to the Stoke goal.
Winger Sims, who was a livewire threat on his first league start since his Premier League debut in November 2016, was denied twice by the busy Jack Butland.
The England keeper also acrobatically turned away Cedric’s volley and Nathan Redmond’s curler but was a spectator as a Sofiane Boufal nodded a free header wide, Southampton’s best chance, with his first touch just seconds after coming on.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke: Paul Lambert’s side remain in relegation zone
Show/hide article…
Jack Butland spoke last week about wanting clarity as soon as possible on who will be England’s No 1 at this summer’s World Cup.
He proceeded to remind Gareth Southgate of his abilities here with a series of important second-half saves to keep surging Southampton at bay and earn Stoke City a valuable point for their survival bid.
Butland appeared to set back his Three Lions cause with a howler at Leicester last weekend that cost Stoke a couple of points.
But there was absolutely no indication of mental fragility as Butland made important saves from Josh Sims, Cedric Soares and Nathan Redmond as Southampton, frankly terrible before the break, threw everything forward after it.
Though there was a crushing inevitability about this six-pointer between a Saints side abysmal at home and travel-sick Stoke ending goalless, it eventually grew into a fairly entertaining watch.
Saints slip a place as a result of Swansea’s thrashing of West Ham, but they remain above the waterline. Stoke, just a point behind them, are below it but not drowned yet.
In the end, Butland made the difference in what turned into a rearguard action for Paul Lambert’s side after they were the brighter in the first-half.
And as he vies with Joe Hart, Jordan Pickford, Tom Heaton and others for the gloves in Russia, it was a well-timed positive performance.
Southgate could make Butland his keeper for at least one of the friendlies against Holland and Italy later this month and that will offer plenty of clues as to who will get the nod for June.
‘It is funny because the Leicester game when he made the mistake, he made two world class saves after, so I knew he was fine,’ said Lambert.
‘First-half he had nothing to do, second he made world class saves. He has a fabulous future ahead of him. He’s a proper bloke and he’ll be a big player for Stoke and England.’
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side, so timid before half-time, roared into life after it and although the manager played all the attacking aces up his sleeve, he had to be satisfied with a point.
‘We dominated the game in the second-half and had the most clear chances,’ said Pellegrino. ‘It is efficiency, we couldn’t score. This is part of football.
‘This is the Premier League, we know it is tough. Every single game is important now.’
There were genuine concerns this match wouldn’t take place at all, but the only evidence of the Beast from the East come kick-off were a few mounds of snow pitchside.
With Southampton winless at home in the Premier League since November 26 and Stoke failing to take three points on the road since October 28, it wasn’t surprising to see empty seats in both the home and away sections.
Those absent were arguably the sensible ones during a non-descript opening half. While it was Saints that saw more of the ball, Stoke created the clearer chances on the break.
Badou Ndiaye warmed the palms of home goalkeeper Alex McCarthy with an early effort from distance, but Stoke really should have done better when a counter-attacking opportunity presented itself on 11 minutes.
Saints bodged a short corner routine - a familiar theme, much to the irritation of the locals - and Joe Allen pinged a ball out of defence into Xherdan Shaqiri near halfway.
Briefly it was two-on-two with Southampton struggling to get defenders back, but when Shaqiri tried to slip Mame Diouf through on goal, it wasn’t the right ball. Diouf fell over and when he returned to his feet, vented angrily in Shaqiri’s direction.
That anger was soon replaced by pain for Diouf, forced off after taking a nasty whack on the shoulder. After four minutes of treatment, the Stoke man left the field so gingerly you could almost see the pain coursing through his body.
As is often the case, Shaqiri was pulling the strings for Stoke and his lovely left-footed cross just before the break was met by Ndiaye. His header looked destined for the bottom corner until McCarthy’s fingertips guided it behind.
Saints saw plenty of the ball and forced seven first-half corners without doing anything with them. Not once did they test Butland before the break and their first shot on target, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, was greeted with ironic cheers.
Right away after the break there was a fresh sense of purpose about Southampton. When Shaqiri misplaced a pass, Sims was sent clear down the left by Guido Carrillo.
His shot, with the angle getting ever more acute, was blocked by the legs of Butland at his near post and from the resultant corner Mario Lemina fired wide.
The 20-year-old Sims was a genuine threat and it was his penalty box hold-up play and exchange of passes with Cedric that led to him forcing Butland into a low stop.
Lambert introduced Peter Crouch, back from injury, at the break and it was the towering striker’s flick-on that released Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting into the clear. Jack Stephens did just about enough to put off the Stoke forward, who fired over.
Choupo-Moting’s reward was to be replaced by Jese a few moments later.
Saints were pushing hard for the opener - Redmond sent in a cross from the byline that was cleared only to Cedric, surging in. His shot was bound for the top corner, but Butland pushed it to safety.
And the Stoke keeper was at full-stretch once again a few minutes later to save Nathan Redmond’s curling effort and then denied the Saints winger less convincingly.
Sofiane Boufal, on the pitch only a few seconds after replacing Sims, then headed wide from a superb position after leaping to meet Redmond’s cross. In fairness, had it been on target, you’d have backed Butland to save it.

Southampton struggles continue after goalless draw with Stoke
Show/hide article…
Southampton failed to ease the pressure on manager Mauricio Pellegrino as their lengthy wait for a Premier League home win was prolonged by a goalless draw with relegation rivals Stoke.
Saints’ last victory at St Mary’s came more than three months ago and they wasted another chance to boost their survival hopes after failing to break down the second-bottom Potters.
Pellegrino’s men dominated the second period but saw Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland keep out efforts from Josh Sims, Cedric Soares and Nathan Redmond before substitute Sofiane Boufal squandered an excellent opportunity to earn the three points.
It is now eight league games - stretching back to November 26 - since Southampton tasted success at their own stadium and they remain a point above the bottom three after being booed off at the end of both halves.
They also could have lost this one as Badou Ndiaye and Maxim Choupo-Moting threatened to score breakaway goals for Paul Lambert’s stubborn visitors.
While both teams were desperate for a win, they would also have been rightly concerned about the ramifications of losing this fixture.
It resulted in an nervous opening period devoid of any real attacking intent.
The main talking point of the first half was a serious-looking injury suffered by Stoke forward Mame Biram Diouf.
He hobbled off in pain clutching his shoulder to be replaced by Erik Pieters with just 23 minutes played having been clattered in the back by Saints defender Wesley Hoedt.
It appeared to be an obvious act of revenge following an innocuous-looking clash between the pair in Southampton box in the opening minutes which left Dutchman Hoedt holding his face.
Stoke boss Lambert had kept faith with the starting XI which earned a point at Leicester last week, while Pellegrino made one alteration, handing young winger Sims - who has recovered from a serious knee injury - his first league start in more than 15 months.
Sims added extra energy to Saints’ team but, after bursting past Bruno Martins Indi and into the penalty area nine minutes before half-time, he hesitated slightly, allowing the Holland defender to block his cross-shot as Guido Carrillo waited in the middle.
Potters midfielder Ndiaye, who earlier escaped a card for a bad tackle on Mario Lemina, came closest to putting the visitors ahead when his flicked header was tipped past the left post by Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
Saints showed more purpose after the restart and England keeper Butland did well to deny Sims, Soares and Redmond with a string of fine saves.
Stoke, who introduced former Southampton striker Peter Crouch at the interval, remained a threat on the counter-attack and a last-ditch challenge from Jack Stephens was required to divert over Choupo-Moting’s close-range attempt.
Pellegrino replaced Sims with Boufal 14 minutes from time and the Moroccan should have made an immediate impact, only to head wide from close range when unmarked as the game ended level.

Southampton 0-0 Stoke: Stalemate keeps pressure on relegation rivals
Show/hide article…
Southampton and Stoke played out a tense but turgid 0-0 draw at St Mary’s that leaves both sides still precariously placed near the bottom of the Premier League.
Badou Ndiaye came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half but the midfielder’s header was tipped around the post by Alex McCarthy.
Southampton were the better side in the second period and Jack Butland was forced into making saves from Joshua Sims and Cedric Soares before substitute Sofiane Boufal headed wide from close range.
The result leaves Stoke in the drop zone in 19th place, with the Saints only a point outside of the relegation places.
For Stoke manager Paul Lambert, it is the second straight game his side have shown their battling qualities away from home to take a point having drawn at Leicester, and their defensive improvement under the Scot was on display once more.
Kurt Zouma and Bruno Martins Indi impressed in containing the Southampton forward line, but the only incident of note in the first 45 minutes came when Mame Diouf was forced off the pitch after a collision with Wesley Hoedt.
Diouf had appeared to intentionally stamp on the Dutch defender’s foot, an incident that was not picked up by referee Anthony Taylor, and Hoedt got his retribution moments later as the Senegalese forward was forced off with a shoulder injury as both went up for an aerial challenge.
Stoke came closest to breaking the deadlock before the interval as Ndiaye rose to meet Xherdan Shaqiri’s cross but McCarthy did well to get down to his left to tip the header around the post.
Southampton improved in the second period as Sims forced Butland into an immediate save with his feet before a fine last-ditch tackle from Jack Stephens on Maxim Choupo-Moting denied Stoke on the counter-attack.
But it was largely one-way traffic towards the visitors’ goal as Cedric’s rising half-volley forced Butland into an acrobatic save before Boufal somehow headed wide from Nathan Redmond’s cross with the goal at his mercy.
But the lack of quality in the final third, so often the issue for both sides all season, meant neither deserved to win as they both were forced to settle for a point.
Mauricio Pellegrino: "We deserved to get something more. I thought we dominated the game in the second half. But it’s about efficiency. We couldn’t convert the possession into goals.
“Obviously, when you make a change you want to make an impact in the game, and we played with more tempo in the second half. We have to learn to do this from the beginning.”
Paul Lambert: "I think any point you get in this division is really good. It’s a tough game, and we lost Mame (Diouf) at a tough time as I thought he was a threat, and we looked really good going forward on the counter-attack in the first half.
“We defended strongly and we may have lost this game a month or so ago. It’s another positive point, and I’m delighted with the team not getting beat. I love it, I love the pressure of it. It’s big-time football, and I can’t praise the lads enough for their efforts.”
In a game of few chances, the Stoke defence continued their resurgence with Zouma showing further signs of maturity during his loan spell from Chelsea.
His positional play was outstanding here, and the clean sheet owed much to his discipline and athleticism during Southampton’s second-half onslaught.
Southampton whipped countless balls into the box through Ryan Bertrand and Redmond, but the French defender made several vital clearances and limited the number of shots on Butland’s goal.
"Southampton were the better side, definitely second half. Stoke were dangerous on the counter-attack but it was just their final pass which wasn’t good enough.
"I wouldn’t say Southampton lay siege on the Stoke goal but I thought Butland was very today, and fair play to him as he made a mistake last week.
"Southampton will be kicking themselves now as they have all these away games now and are also in the FA Cup. They go to Wigan and other teams will be playing on that day.
“They’ll be playing catch up. The best chance fell to Boufal and if it was Carrillo or Gabbiadini they would’ve scored. I don’t know where the goals are going to come. They just huff and puff.”
Southampton visit Newcastle at St James’ Park next Saturday while Stoke host Manchester City on March 12, live on Monday Night Football.

Southampton 0 Stoke City 0: Stalemate leaves both teams fighting to secure top-flight safety
Show/hide article…
When the team that can’t win at home meets the team that can’t win away, it is somewhat over-optimistic to anticipate a landslide of goals. And, largely thanks to the efforts of Jack Butland in the Stoke goal who made three excellent saves, few can have been surprised by a goal-free conclusion that left both sides still deep in the relegation mire.
This was a game which the Match of the Day editors must have struggled to find 30 seconds of highlights to fill the last-in-the-running order scheduling that inevitably came its way. Frankly, when the fourth official indicated there would be five minutes added to the first half after the Stoke forward Mame Diouf had dislocated his shoulder, it seemed only a matter of time before the UN intervened to prevent the crowd suffering further punishment.
There was a moment midway through the second half which gave perfect summary of the level of this match. Southampton’s Nathan
Redmond spun past two players and passed to Mario Lemina, well placed just outside the Stoke box. His shot missed the target by several yards.
