Former Saints target and Fiorentina captain Astori dies, 31

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints target and Fiorentina captain Davide Astori has died, aged 31.

His death was announced just hours before the Italy defender was due to lead his club side out against Udinese.

Astori is reported to have died suddenly on Sunday morning in a Udine hotel.

The club were basing themselves at the hotel ahead of Sunday’s Serie A match.

A club statement read: "Fiorentina is deeply saddened to announce that our captain Davide Astori has passed away, after suffering a sudden illness.

“For this terrible and delicate situation, and above all out of respect for his family, we appeal to the sensitivity of the media.”

The central defender began his career with AC Milan, but failed to break into the first team.

He moved to Cagliari in 2008 and made 174 appearances in six years at the club.

Astori was rumoured to have been the subject of an £8 million bid by 2012 by Saints.

Rumours again circulated in 2013 that the club had made a £10 million for the defender.

However, Astori signed a new deal with Cagliari in 2014.

Following loan stints with Roma and Fiorentina, Astori made his move to Florence permanent in 2016 - scoring three goals in 58 games.

Astori was capped for Italy 14 times, making his debut in a 2-0 friendly win over Ukraine in 2011.

Following the news of his death, all of Sunday’s Serie A games have been postponed as a show of respect for the player.

Vokins enjoying step up

Show/hide article…

Talented young full-back Jake Vokins has expressed his gratitude after being selected for Radhi Jaïdi’s Under-23s setup in recent weeks, having earned the call-up after a string of bright performances for the club’s Under-18s side.

Still only 17, the youngster isn’t afraid to admit that there is still plenty to learn, but is benefitting from the physical challenge posed by playing Premier League 2 football.

Ahead of the teenager in experience, but valuable learning tools, are fellow full-back pairing Sam McQueen and Matt Targett (who is currently enjoying a successful loan spell at Fulham), and Vokins is happy to have good examples to study in his position.

“Yeah I’m just happy to be playing 23s football again, it’s important for me as an individual to progress,” the teenager said. "I want to continue that form going in to today’s game with Brighton.

"I’m playing against much older players, they are more physical, and more experienced. I want to challenge them, and learn off the players around me. They move the ball quicker, and it’s a much tougher challenge.

"It is always nice to play in a stadium, on a nice surface, and we’ll be looking to play our style of football [against Brighton].

“Matt Targett and Sam McQueen both came through the academy, like myself, and I look at them and see what I can learn. They are progressing in to the first-team and getting more regular time, so learning in training and looking at clips is always helpful.”

Jack Butland’s never-say-die spirit fills Paul Lambert with belief

Show/hide article…

If Stoke City’s time in the Premier League is to expire after a decade, they certainly won’t be going down without one hell of a fight.

Their manager Paul Lambert was Antonio Conte-esque in his animated touchline encouragement at St Mary’s, whipping up the vocal travelling support to endlessly chant his name.

On the field, his players — and especially goalkeeper Jack Butland — produced a spirited rearguard action against a second-half Southampton onslaught to earn another point for their survival bid.

It was a fourth draw in six matches since Lambert took over from Mark Hughes and, though they remain in the relegation zone by a point, there is a defiance about them.

Trouble is, Stoke must play four of the top six in their final nine matches — including a Manchester City side who stuffed seven past them in October next week — at a time when draws need to be converted into wins.

‘You just keep playing and hanging in and things will happen,’ said an upbeat Lambert. ‘A few months ago, we might have lost this game and that’s a big thing. We have got players that can turn the game on a switch. If it was at any other point in the season — that we had been beaten once in six — then I’d have snapped your hand off, but because of the position we are in . . .

‘The beauty of it is that from 11th, 12th and 13th down there is nothing in it.’

Though Southampton pressed hard after half-time, it had been Stoke who showed the greater initiative before the break, and Lambert says it will be no different against Man City. ‘I have never sat back against anyone,’ he said. ‘I know we are up against the best team in the country without a shadow of a doubt next Monday and maybe even in Europe.

‘We have got to find a way where we can make it uncomfortable for them and hurt them. It will be difficult but, on any day, you can win a game.

‘I have never once come away from a game thinking we never turned up.

‘We have always looked like a team that is going to be really difficult to beat, we just need a bit of magic to get us a goal. I have never encountered anybody who isn’t putting their shoulder to the wheel.’

Butland, seeking to make a case to be England’s No 1 at this summer’s World Cup in Russia, made crucial saves from Josh Sims, Cedric Soares and Nathan Redmond as Southampton cranked up the pressure.

‘He is unbelievable,’ said Lambert. ‘He makes saves that I think ‘where has that come from?’ He is right at the top of his game at the moment.’

THE VERDICT: Saints drink in last chance saloon

Show/hide article…

Saints are starting to take a drink in last chance saloon.

Yet another draw, this time 0-0 at home to Stoke, has left them feeling deeper in the mire than ever, and they really need to start climbing their way out at Newcastle.

It seems strange to say that Saints feel in bigger trouble now than they have all season, given they have sat in the bottom three and currently they are not.

But a quick glance at the fixture list and the fact that things are slowly but surely going to get much harder proves that now has to be the time for Saints to rally if they are to survive.

The positive thing is that there are so many sides in it.

Whilst a few have picked up some form and started to extricate themselves away from the bottom three, there are still a healthy sized bunch there fighting to avoid the remaining two positions above West Brom.

Also, such is the division this season, it is likely to take a lower number of points than you would normally expect to survive.

But having passed up two good chances to win in the last two games, Saints now feel like they need three points at Newcastle.

Again, positivity is likely to be the key.

Having bemoaned a lack of it until falling behind at Burnley, Saints once more started slowly against Stoke. They picked up and had all of the second half, but just couldn’t get a goal.

The tale of caution is told in the table. Saints have fewer wins than any side other than rock bottom West Brom. But you also have to zoom up to the top eight to find teams have lost fewer games than they have.

It’s been the 13 draws that have either sustained their survival bid, or hampered it, depending on how you view things.

Saints are not at home for more than a month now, with four consecutive away trips in league and cup. That might just be a good thing for them.

They have struggled so badly to perform at St Mary’s - a real pity for those who have forked out good money on season tickets – but their extra caution and counter attacking style feels better suited on the road.

Mauricio Pellegrino is surely going to stick to his guns now, and maintain style and shape given all these away trips, and will resist the pressure to change it. Having refused to budge so far it would seem strange to switch now.

But he will be all too aware Saints have just got to win now. If not then things look bleak.

You could almost smell the tension in the air right from the kick off at a snow cleared St Mary’s when a heavy Stoke touch nearly let Saints in before an overhit Potters pass sailed straight out of play.

The first half was a bit like that.

In a game that neither team felt they could afford to lose there were errors in possession and a distinct lack of chances taken to really push forward.

Saints had drafted in Josh Sims but looked uncertain as to how to utilise him for the most part.

A series of terrible corners – indeed there were 15 for Saints during the game, many of which were frustratingly awful - and a lack of ability to be incisive and get in behind or round the outside of Stoke hampered Saints.

The one time they did manage it, when Sims made a break, he was blocked out at the last.

It summed up Saints’ attacking half that there were ironic cheers when Sims hooked a ball back in on stoppage time that might have just about counted as an only shot on target.

Stoke had marginally the better of whatever opportunities there were.

Badou Ndiaye hit one shot straight at Alex McCarthy and another wide while Konstantinos Stafylidis slashed over the bar.

It was Ndiaye who had the best opening of the first period three minutes before half time as he drifted in unmarked to reach Xherdan Shaqiri’s cross but his downward header was brilliantly stopped by McCarthy diving to his left.

Saints showed far more intensity in the second period, especially once Pellegrino went positive and threw on Manolo Gabbiadini.

They managed to exert wave after wave of pressure on Stoke, but they couldn’t take a chance when it mattered so much.

Sims was a livewire, twice forcing Jack Butland into good saves, Mario Lemina fired off target from a presentable position, Cedric Soares hit a shot from distance that was stopped while Nathan Redmond also found the Stoke keeper too hard to beat, including from one excellent curling shot.

The big chance of the game fell to Saints and Sofiane Boufal, whose first touch after coming off the bench was to put a free header from six yards wide of the post after Redmond had stood up a perfect cross to find him.

Gabbiadini also produced an air shot as Saints camped in the Stoke half but couldn’t find the net.

Stoke struggled to do much more than just hang on, but they did have one opportunity when Peter Crouch’s flick-on played in Maxim Choupo-Moting but he lifted the ball over McCarthy and also the bar.

Saints need to taste that winning feeling.

Bertrand issues Saints rallying cry

Show/hide article…

RYAN Bertrand has urged everyone at Saints to “stand up” and help drag the club away from relegation danger.

The England international is not panicking yet about Saints’ predicament, despite them extending their home winless run to eight games – a new club record in the Premier League – in the goalless draw against Stoke on Saturday.

“You definitely need all the experience you can get and that’s what you need to draw on,” Bertrand said.

“Everyone needs to stand up and you can’t do anything else but look forward because the table is still very tight.

“You’re just looking to get that win and string one or two wins together and then it will be a completely different story.”

The 28-year-old left-back has been handed the captain’s armband during this recent run with Steven Davis currently out injured.

The skipper was pleased with the team’s performance in the second-half against the Potters, which saw the hosts create plenty of chances but fail to find an all-important winner.

It meant Saints’ relegation fears only heightened, but Bertrand wants them to take the positives from their latest display.

“We just applied more energy and just went up a notch in our intensity and we had them on the ropes but we didn’t manage to score,” he said.

“It was a good way to finish. If you’re going to draw it is better to finish as the team in the ascendancy so we can take positive from that and move on.

“We know the points were there to be won but we didn’t quite get over the line today.”

The state of play in the lower reaches of the Premier League remains tight with virtually all of the bottom half in a fight for survival.

Saints now have a trip to Newcastle this Saturday, before visiting West Ham (March 31) following the FA Cup quarter-final at Wigan (March 18) and after the international break.

“There are a lot of positives to take from how tight it is so we just need to get the goals in and turn these goals into wins and it’s a completely different story,” he said.

“We need to get our wins, especially playing the teams close to us. Draws are just not good enough for us at the moment.”
