Pellegrino: We have to be positive from the start

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino wants Saints to start games the way they performed in the second half against Stoke.

Saints were far more positive in the second period at St Mary’s and did everything but score as they ended up held to a goalless draw.

The frustration was much greater in the first half as Saints struggled to make any forward impact on their relegation rivals.

When asked whether he was frustrated with what he had seen, Pellegrino said: “We are obviously disappointed with the result.

“Frustrating no. That is when you give up.

“For me the feeling is we are disappointed because in the second half we did everything and played much better than them to try to win and I think we deserve it.

“Football you have to score goals and we couldn’t do it and we have to use the second half as a reference for the future.

“As for learning we have to start from the beginning playing with this tempo.

“The opponent was much better in defence in the first half because they were much more aggressive, following man to man some players and controlling our main people in front.

“Second half the tempo was much better, we have clear chance and now we have to keep going.”

Saints did something similar against Burnley the week before, where they were in their shell until they fell behind and then turned far more positive and got the equaliser.

It begs the question of why Saints cannot start like that.

“Maybe one reason was that the opponent was fresh enough to control better our offensive player and we didn’t move the ball quick enough to try to create this space,” reflected Pellegrino.

“Also we couldn’t switch the play in the first half like we did in the second.

“Also everybody realises in the half time we had to do something more and play with more pace.”

In a relegation battle the mentality of the players will be key, and there are plenty questioning it.

“My concern is every single aspect of my players,” insisted the Saints manager.

“I have to try to help them to try to find different solutions to try to be better.

“For managers the easier things are the tactical or technical things to put players on the pitch but to connect with human beings who have their feelings, beliefs and values.

“We have to be behind them, support them and be demanding because at this level it’s not easy to be there.”

Pellegrino’s high hopes for Sims

Show/hide article…

The manager handed Sims his first Premier League start since November 2016 in Saturday’s goalless draw with Stoke at St Mary’s.

With just nine Premier League games left to play, Saints now face an extended period of away fixtures, which Pellegrino believes could bring Sims to the fore.

“I think he did well with his pace and he was a problem for them,” said Pellegrino, reflecting on Sims’s performance against the Potters.

“There were some movements that showed a lack of connection, because he hasn’t played too much and there are new teammates, a new manager and new movements, but I think he was always dangerous and created some chances.

“It is good news for us because now we have more games away with more space to run forward.

“It’s important for us to have everybody ready. I feel that most of the team are ready to compete.

“For me, the main thing is to be mentally strong (away from home), because we will play with a lot of things against us and we need to be really well prepared.”

Sims keen to provide a spark

Show/hide article…

Bright on the ball, the 20-year-old produced an impressive 75 minutes yesterday and is now intent on doing the same if given the chance against Newcastle next weekend.

The Magpies are one point ahead of Saints in the standings, and Sims is aware of just how valuable maximum spoils can be when attempting to improve the side’s precarious league position.

“As long as we pick up results, starting next week, it doesn’t matter about any other team,” Sims asserted. "One win can take us up two or three places.

"Every game now is massive; we have to view them as finals. Away games are different, but we need to pick up points wherever we can.

"I always want to create a spark in the final third, and I’m pleased to be back doing that.

“I want to try and help the team collect points, because we aren’t in a great situation at the moment, so hopefully I can be that fresh face.”

Jaïdi keen to extend momentum

Show/hide article…

The Amex Stadium will host the tie, as Southampton’s Under-23s enter their final five games of the league season intent on finishing the campaign stronger than they started it.

Explaining that the confidence in camp is particularly high after a string of good results, Jaïdi feels that his youngsters are well positioned to deliver another credible performance on Monday evening.

“We had a long journey back from Blackburn, and on reflection, the performance was pretty pleasing,” the Under-23s coach commented.

"We wanted to get the boys back together this week, because you can feel the energy and the spirit. The atmosphere around them is positive. Training has been good.

"The younger boys have performed well, they’ve sent a message to Martin [Hunter] and myself. We want to give them more opportunities, but also keep the balance in the team and give the right personnel game time.

"We expect Brighton to play out from the back, an attacking team who will be dangerous in the final third.

“We’re continuing to work hard on improvement, but related to the last couple of games, momentum is key. We’ll try to finish on a high, that’s our aim, and what the players should be thinking about.”
