Former Everton and Southampton boss Ronald Koeman named as new Netherlands manager

Show/hide article…

Ronald Koeman has been appointed manager of the Netherlands.

The former Everton and Southampton boss takes charge of a team who have failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup.

The Dutch football federation - the KNVB - announced on its website that Koeman has signed a contract that runs through to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Koeman’s first press conference was immediately announced by the KNVB, and he was set to speak about his new role at 3.30pm GMT.

He succeeds Dick Advocaat, who stepped down after the team’s failure to reach this summer’s finals in Russia.

It is 54-year-old Koeman’s 10th managerial post after spells in charge of Vitesse Arnhem, Ajax, Benfica, PSV Eindhoven, Valencia, AZ Alkmaar, Feyenoord, Southampton and Everton.

As a player, Koeman was a key member of the great Dutch team that won Euro 88, starring alongside the likes of Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard and Marco van Basten.

Saints U23s 3 West Brom U23s 2: Sam McQueen scores stunning free kick

Show/hide article…

SAM McQueen scored a stunning free kick as Saints U23s replicated the first team’s 3-2 win at West Brom at Staplewood last night.

Tyreke Johnson and Aaron O’Driscoll scored the other goals as Radhi Jaidi’s boys made it back-to-back wins in Premier League 2.

Johnson opened the scoring in the eighth minute, tapping in at the far post after an impressive move.

Within five minutes, West Brom were level as Nick Clayton-Phillips headed in a free-kick from the right.

Five minutes later, McQueen responded with his dead-ball screamer.

The left-back has not played in the Premier League since the turn of the year.

But he reminded Mauricio Pellegrino of his talents in style, driving a dipping 30-yarder over the wall and into the roof of the net with his instep to restore the home side’s advantage.

It remained that way until half time.

Michael Obafemi struck the post from inside the six-yard box following a 54th-minute corner.

Another Johnson flag-kick eight minutes later led to the winning goal.

Centre-half O’Driscoll was the quickest to react when it was flicked on and fired it in low from eight yards.

Jack Rose was sent the wrong way from the penalty spot in the 68th minute.

But just like the first team at the Hawthorns, Saints hung on to their lead.

They were unfortunate not to score a fourth when Johnson slid in at the far post to meet a right-flank cross from the impressive Josh Sims.

The ball looked to have crossed the line after striking the underside of the crossbar in the 83rd minute.

But Saints still took three points to add to last week’s win against Stoke.

Their next match is against Cardiff U23s in the Premier League Cup on Friday

l Adam Lallana was sent off for violent conduct while playing for Liverpool U23s against Tottenham in Premier League 2 last night.

The ex-Saint grabbed the neck of teenager George Marsh after being clattered by the Spurs teenager at Stevenage, before being dragged away by teammate Danny Ings.

Lallana, 29, has been restricted to just seven appearances for Liverpool this season by thigh and groin injuries.

Is Garth Crooks’ swipe at Saints unfounded?

Show/hide article…

GARTH Crooks would do well to study the Premier League tables of the last four seasons before concluding that what Saints “have done for too long is flirt with relegation”.

In the BBC pundit’s team of the week feature on the corporation’s website, he has selected Saints men Jack Stephens and Mario Lemina.

But rather than this being a compliment to Saints’ comeback victory at West Bromwich Albion, Crooks has taken a couple of swipes at the club instead.

On top of suggesting Lemina should be playing for a “proper outfit” like Arsenal, he comments about Saints’ struggles with relegation, despite them finishing in the top eight for four successive seasons.

He writes: “The Saints, however, on the back of a fabulous 3-2 win, must decide whether they are a feeder club for the top-four sides or are going to try to win something themselves. An FA Cup triumph, perhaps, or even a period in Europe, will provide stability.

“They have certainly produced the players over the years to do both. What they are doing - and have done for far too long - is flirting with relegation. When you flirt with relegation, the inevitable always happens.”

Although strugging this term, Saints have been relegated once from the Premier League in its history and since arriving back in the top-flight in 2012/13 have finished 14th, 8th, 7th, 6th and 8th – not exactly flirting with relegation, Garth.

On top of that, perhaps forgetting football is allowed to exist below the “big clubs”, Crooks suggests Gabon international Lemina is playing for the “wrong team” and should be tuning out for a “proper outfit” after a stellar display and goal in the 3-2 win at West Brom.

He writes: “This lad is playing for the wrong team. Seriously. Mario Lemina is an Arsenal player if ever I have seen one.

“For far too long in my opinion, Arsene Wenger has faffed around with the likes of Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin. Wenger should have invested in Lemina during the summer and got in there well before Southampton did.

“Lemina is wasted at St Mary’s. Sorry, Southampton fans, but you just do not have the class of player to bring the best out of this lad.

“His performance against West Brom was immense. Admittedly, we have not seen enough performances like this - but you would if you put him in a proper outfit.”

Saints fans, who have been riled by these comments, should really take this as a compliment. Crooks has got himself wound up about this, but a quick check of the club’s recent recruitment record would give him all he needs to know.

“Wasted” at a club that has a track record of taking players from one level to the next?

And what constitutes a “proper outfit”? One that perhaps has finished in the top eight for the last four seasons, perhaps?

One that has played in Europe in three of the last four campaigns?

Lemina himself has spoken about his own performances in recent times and much of the lull in his form, he says, is down to an ankle injury that sidelined him in October.

In December, he told the Daily Echo: “Coming back from that injury I had to start from fresh again, build up my confidence from nothing, while I was watching my team-mates play when I wanted to help them.

“It’s just building up that confidence again now.”

He added: “The injury was a set-back because I was adapting to life in England, but I’m starting to build up confidence in it now.

“I don’t think it will be long before I’m back to 100 per cent.

“It took a long time to get over, but now things are getting better and I’m working hard – I’m gaining confidence all the time while I’m training and playing.”

The 24-year-old’s return to form at West Brom is a promising sign that Lemina can reach the heights he was at in September, prior to his injury.

Van Dijk ready for St Mary’s boo boys

Show/hide article…

VIRGIL van Dijk insists he will not be bothered if he is booed by Saints fans when he returns to St Mary’s on Sunday with Liverpool.

The Dutchman moved to Anfield for a world record (for a defender) £75m fee in last month’s transfer window after a well-documented and protracted transfer stand-off.

It is likely to mean the centre-back will get a frosty reception on Sunday when Jurgen Klopp’s side come to the south coast.

“What can you do? Maybe they can boo the whole game,” Van Dijk said.

“What can you do about it? You can’t do anything about it.

“I made the decision, I have enjoyed every bit of it and I am very grateful for everything that they (Southampton) did for me. I have moved on, they have moved on.”

“I know they are struggling and we need to win. I am going there with only one mindset and that is to win.

“Obviously it will be nice to see the players I have played with and the friends I have there but, for me, it is going to be about one thing only and that is to win the game.”

Saints have lost just once in seven games since Van Dijk left, while Liverpool have won just once in four games with the Netherlands international in the team.

Certainly, with the much-maligned former Saint Dejan Lovren, who left St Mary’s for Anfield in 2014, also in the Reds squad, Van Dijk will unlikely be the only recipient of booing on Sunday.

The 26-year-old says he isn’t bothered about other people’s opinions on his mixed start to life on Merseyside.

“I can’t do anything about the fee so it is pretty easy for me. I am pretty calm on that,” he said.

“You are always going to have that but the most important thing is what happens at Melwood and what happens here with the people who care about the team.

“Other people around – fans of other clubs, pundits – they can have their opinions, but it doesn’t really bother me.

“With the football we play, the pressing, the different options with players, it is totally different here.

“So you need time to get used to everything but I am working on it every day together with the team.

“I am talking with the manager and everyone who can help me out. I want to improve and get the maximum out of myself and that is what I am going to do.”

Saints are currently unbeaten in six games in all competitions and dragged themselves out of the Premier League’s relegation zone with a 3-2 comeback win at West Bromwich Albion last Saturday.

This means Zaha is set to miss most of the relegation run-in, and Roy Hodgson will have to do without perhaps his most valuable player.

Zaha can stake a strong claim to be the most important member of the Palace squad, but who takes this title at every other Premier League club?

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk ready for hostile reception on Southampton return

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is prepared for a hostile reception when he returns to former club Southampton with Liverpool this weekend.

The Dutchman became the world’s most expensive defender in January after the Reds paid a fee in the region of £75m for his services.

Van Dijk had put in a transfer request last summer in hope of engineering a move to Merseyside, while tension was caused between the two clubs leading Liverpool to issue a public apology for their pursuit of the player.

After finally sealing his move, Van Dijk is ready for a frosty reception at St Mary’s during the Super Sunday showdown, live on Sky Sports.

“Maybe they can boo the whole game. You can’t do anything about it,” Van Dijk said.

“Obviously it’ll be nice to see the players and the friends I have there but, for me, it is going to be about one thing only and that is to win the game.”

The 26-year-old is still adapting to life on Merseyside and has experienced the highs of scoring a derby goal on his debut with the lows of giving away a last-minute penalty against Tottenham.

“With the football we play, the pressing, the different options with players, it is totally different here,” Van Dijk added. "So you need time to get used to everything but I am working on it every day together with the team.

"The most important thing is what happens at Melwood and what happens here with the people who care about the team… other people around, fans of other clubs, pundits, they can have their opinions, but it doesn’t really bother me.

“I am talking with the manager and everyone who can help me out. I want to improve and get the maximum out of myself and that is what I am going to do.”

Liverpool are third in the Premier League with 51 points from 26 games while Southampton sit 15th on 26 points.
