WATCH: See a sensational goal from Mario Lemina in our Saints World Cup round-up

Show/hide article…

The £16m Saints midfielder struck the winner in a 2-1 win away to Ivory Coast - just a few days after losing 3-0 at home to the same opponents.

Lemina provided the decisive moment for the Panthers, with a stunning 25-yard strike across goal that found the far corner in the 29th minute.

The goal followed Axel Meye’s 19th-minute effort, and, although Ivory Coast pulled one back just before the hour mark through Maxwell Cornet, the visitors held on.

The result means Gabon stay third in Group C of the African qualifying section, but they are now just two points behind Ivory Coast, ahead of their final two games - away to Morocco and home to Mali.

l Dusan Tadic got the better of his Saints colleague Shane Long in Dublin last night.

Aleksandar Kolarov wrecked the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup dream as 10-man Serbia eased themselves to the brink of qualification on a controversial night in Dublin.

Kolarov’s 55th-minute piledriver secured a precious 1-0 win at the Aviva Stadium and guaranteed his side a top-two finish in Group D despite defender Nikola Maksimovic’s 68th-minute red card.

But Ireland were furious not to be awarded a penalty for Jagos Vukovic’s challenge on substitute Daryl Murphy six minutes later.

Martin O’Neill’s misery was compounded by Wales’ 2-0 victory in Moldova, which means the Republic now sit third in the group with just two games to play and with key men Robbie Brady and James McClean suspended for the Moldovans’ visit to the Aviva next month.

l Demarai Gray and Tammy Abraham responded to their recalls to the England U21 starting XI by inspiring a 3-0 defeat of Latvia at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium.

They each scored as England earned the first win of their latest qualifying campaign. Brighton’s Kasey Palmer added the third in the second half.

Premier League managers: Every club’s boss ranked on job security from highest to lowest

Show/hide article…

For all the lucrative contracts, being a Premier League football manager isn’t quite the glamorous position it sounds, with coaches falling out with their owners three games into the new season.

There is rarely room for sentiment as Claudio Ranieri found out at Leicester, with each weekend’s results being consigned to history once the full time whistle blows around venues across the country.

It is only a matter of time before we get news of the first managerial casualty of the season given the expectations that are demanded from those in the dug-out.

In light of this, we’ve ranked each manager from England’s top flight on the safety of their job – scroll through the gallery above to find out who could be the first to be sacked this season.

Inside Track: Watford

Show/hide article…

What has the start of the season been like for Watford?

It’s been a very solid start for Watford, who haven’t had much to complain about from any of their games thus far.

There was a danger of the wind being taken out of the club’s sails with a poor start after so much optimism following Marco Silva’s arrival and so many new signings, but they’ve had a real grit and determination which was missing for long periods last year, and that is largely what earned them a last-minute draw with Liverpool on the opening day.

Since then, they outplayed Bournemouth in their own back yard to win away from home for the first time in seven months, and ground out a draw with Brighton last week despite playing more than an hour with ten men, in a game they would have found a way to lose not too long ago.

What difference has Marco Silva made?

He’s got a better connection with everyone around the club. The old head coach, Walter Mazzarri, was very stand-offish with the press, and more dangerously the fans, but it has since turned out that extended to the dressing room too. Silva, in contrast, is much more straight-talking, honest and likeable, and clearly has the respect of his players.

He’s always had his team well-drilled and, even at the start of pre-season, you saw him pulling players aside and giving them tactical tidbits after games. That’s carried on into the Premier League so far, and tells its own story with back-to-back clean sheets.

Whether it’s come from him or upstairs, there has been far more of an emphasis on a British core since his arrival, which has been useful in terms of getting up-and-running quickly in the Premier League. I would imagine it has also helped to create more of a unit in the dressing room.

What is the style of play and approach like under Silva?

Silva has always favoured a 4-2-3-1 wherever he’s been, and he’s played it from the moment he walked through the door at Vicarage Road. Watford are compact out of possession, but can be expansive in it, playing with two genuine wide-men and using the pace he’s brought into the team to good effect. The club has often been accused of being ‘physical’ in recent years, which seems a nice way of saying ugly to me, but they definitely have more about them to mix it up this season than they have done previously, with some very gifted technical players.

Who have been the standout performers so far this season?

Brazilian winger Richarlison has played less than three games and is already becoming a cult hero. He scored his first goal at Bournemouth the other week and is full of tricks, and always direct, but has more physical strength than a lot of wingers. He’s only 20, so he will have his ups and downs, but he’s started very well.

Elsewhere, midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré has been going under the radar for a good six months now – so I’m not sure whether I should mention him – but he’s Watford’s Mr Dependable in the middle of the park. He nearly left the club last summer when Mazzarri didn’t want him, but he’s forced his way into contention and is one of the first names on the teamsheet now. He’s composed on the ball, can play his way out of trouble, works hard and can tackle. I saw something once that compared him to a young Vieira, and there’s some truth to that.

Are there any other players you think could be key for Watford this weekend?

Andre Carrillo arrived only a couple of days before Watford’s last game, so he only came off the bench against Brighton. Since then, he’s been away with Peru and only arrived back in Watford on Wednesday, so he could be among the substitutes again. But, either way, he’s got pace to burn and worked under Silva at Sporting Lisbon, where he had the best season of his career so far. He looked bright when he came on last time out and he could give Ryan Bertrand a tough time if he appears again.

Kevin Davies on remarkable journey from Premier League scorer to the boardroom

Show/hide article…

Kevin Davies is training to be a director of football after insisting his old club Southampton have shown how the role can be a success in England.

Southampton announced their latest boss when Argentine Mauricio Pellegrino, 45, replaced Claude Puel, who was axed after one season in charge.

But despite the South Coast club’s regular changes in the dug-out and player sales, Saints have marched on since their nadir in League One in 2009.

They have since established themselves in the Premier League, reached Europe and made the League Cup final – all under the guidance of director of football Les Reed.

This term they are unbeaten in the top-flight and former England, Saints and Bolton forward Davies has hailed their approach and predicted more British clubs will start using the set-up, which is commonplace in Europe.

Davies is among a clutch of ex-players currently doing a Masters of Sport Directorship with Manchester Metropolitan University.

Davies,40, told MirrorSport: “The sporting director or director of football is someone who can be key in developing the mid to long term strategy for the club to get success and sustain it.

“Les Reed at Southampton is a great example of how it can work.

“They are an old club of mine and if you look at where they have come from since they have been in League One and been in big trouble, they have put the process in place.

“Les has been paramount to where they are now.

“The role takes a bit of pressure off the manager and allows a club to create a culture and philosophy that when change does inevitably happen it doesn’t affect the club or the academy.

“It is crucial to the club’s long-term success and sustainability. It is a model from Europe but is talked about a lot more in this country now.

“It is something we will see more of in this country and it will only be a good thing.

“It allows the manager or head coach to concentrate on the team and have someone above you to manage other departments.”

Graduates of the MMU course include Aston Villa technical director Steve Round , new Leicester assistant Michael Appleton and Sean O’Driscoll, since its launch in September 2014.

Former England manager Steve McClaren and ex-Birmingham and Jamaica international Michael Johnson are among the current intake.

The 24-month part-time programme from the business school teaches pupils how to help run sporting organisations from top to bottom.

Ex-Derby centre-back Johnson explained how the role can help kids progress into the first team in the wake of England U20s winning the World Cup.

Johnson,43, said: “A manager is day to day but that doesn’t give your club the chance to build and you need a custodian of the long-term vision who can connect the academy with the first team.

“If the manager keeps changing and different managers are coming in then the organisation is constantly swaying.

“But if there are firm foundations from the bottom up, the manager can fit into the culture and environment that the club set.

“It is important to make sure that transition from academy players is quite fluid all the way up into the first team.

“Those are the sort of opportunities not necessarily happening today because people are looking for the quick fix.

“One day I would like the opportunity to put what I have learned into practice and help build a club from the bottom up from the academy to the leadership at the top.”

The MMU course is taught in blocks of seminars, masterclasses, keynote speakers and field visits.

The syllabus includes the latest thinking on leadership practice, sports governance, innovation and decision-making.

MBA executive programme director Sara Ward said: “The former players find it tough but have the motivation and dedication to do it. We haven’t had any people drop-out.”

Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal will continue to track Van Dijk: Saints want a full season

Virgil van Dijk will still have Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal tracking him at Southampton

The Dutchman failed to clinch a dream move to Anfield this summer.

Chelsea and Arsenal were also in the hunt but Southampton held firm over their ‘not for sale’ stance.

The 26-year-old was determined to leave and now faces the prospect of reintegrating with the squad.

Van Dijk has returned to first-team training although he is some way from being match fit.

Southampton’s captain has not played since January due to injury and the summer transfer saga.

The 20 shortest managerial reigns ever in the Premier League - Frank de Boer next?

Show/hide article…

It looks like being a big weekend for two Premier League managers.

Both West Ham United boss Slaven Bilic and Crystal Palace supremo Frank de Boer could be facing the sack following poor starts to the season.

The duo are tasked with games against Huddersfield and Burnley, respectively, but know negative outcomes could end their tenures in the English top-flight.

Hammers boss Bilic has been in charge of the east London side for more than two years, but Dutchman De Boer has only been in the job at Selhurst Park for just 73 days*, which would make it one of the shortest reigns ever.

But which Premier League bosses would De Boer join if he were sacked at the weekend? Click the right arrow above to find out…

Long a “nightmare” to play against

Show/hide article…

FORMER Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has labelled Saints striker Shane Long a “nightmare” to mark after the pair faced each other in a World Cup qualifier.

Serbia captain Ivanovic, who now plays for Zenit Saint Petersburg in Russia, hailed his side’s bravery after managing to repel Long and his Republic of Ireland colleagues.

Ex-Manchester City man Aleksandar Kolarov’s goal secured a 1-0 win over Group D rivals at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Ivanovic said: "I know how Premier League football works, but this was the toughest I have ever played against.

"It was a duel all around the pitch, definitely the toughest game we have played so far in the group. I am very proud we showed the courage to come out with the three points.

"We are naturally physical and we have our talents and some of those don’t compare with the Irish players and the way they play, especially in the way they attack, but we accept this as natural.

“Both Shane Long and Jon Walters were a nightmare, an absolute handful to mark. I had to stay completely focused on both of them at all times.”

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Renato Sanches could debut this weekend

Show/hide article…

The international break is over, the Premier League is back and the coming weekend will give fans across the country a chance to see their newest signings in action for the first time.

Clubs up and down the league completed late business as the summer transfer window drew to a close, with stars getting their first chance to pull on their new shirts coming this weekend.

Here, Sportsmail takes a look at the men who could play for their new sides for the first time.

The long-haired Italian international right back was brought in from Sporting Lisbon on deadline day to provide serious competition ageing icon for Bruno. He’s unlikely to dislodge the Spaniard just yet.

Australian international Mat Ryan was signed as Brighton’s new No 1 this summer, but shaky displays so far have thrown his position into doubt. Loan signing Krul is unlikely to take his place just yet, though.

With much of the deadline day talk surrounding a non-move for Alexis Sanchez, the Clarets’ £5m signing of Huddersfield’s Nahki Wells flew under the radar. He’s scored goals wherever he’s been but will have to wait to get going at Turf Moor as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

He’s the wing back Chelsea fans knew little about before his £25m acquisition from Torino on deadline day, but he’s a vital addition to a squad previously low on numbers. He’s barely been in London since his move, though, due to international duty with Italy, meaning a starting spot is unlikely against Leicester.

If the English midfielder does make his Chelsea debut this weekend, he will be doing so against the side he left less than a week ago for £30m and won the Premier League with in 2015-16. His first appearance is likely to come from the bench.

Palace certainly needed defensive reinforcements heading towards the end of the transfer window, and in signing Mamadou Sakho they brought in a friendly face. He’s been working his way back to fitness during pre-season, after injury ended his previous spell at Selhurst Park, which means Eagles fans may have to wait a week or so to see their new signing in action.

The Croatian youngster brings pace and unpredictability to the Toffees side, following his £8m move from Hajduk Split, but this weekend’s game with Spurs will perhaps become too soon for a start. A more likely debut for him could come against Sunderland in the Carabao Cup.

The signing from Nurnberg starred for the Terriers in their mid-season friendly victory over German side Altona 93 last week, but with Huddersfield’s winning start to the season, David Wagner is unlikely to change a winning side.

The Swiss international is currently on loan from Ingolstadt and was another to put in an impressive display against the German minnows in Hamburg. Again, like Sabiri, he is unlikely to be given a start this weekend.

The former England international goalkeeper been signed as a back up option following his release from Leeds, so is unlikely to see much playing time.

The Foxes made a deadline day splash with this £22m signing, but any plans to field him this weekend have been shelved after FIFA rejected his registration after they missed the deadline. He remains a Leicester player but now can’t stay until January.

Another deadline day signing, this time on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, Dragovic has been brought in as competition for Harry Maguire, Wes Morgan and Robert Huth. It seems unlikely the new boy will have done enough to oust any of them just yet.

The Reds made the biggest splash of all on deadline day as they completed the signing of the Arsenal man for £35m, but will he be involved when his new side face Manchester City in Saturday’s early game? He faces a fight to start but he’s almost certain to play, one way or another.

The big Swede is back in red after agreeing a new one-year deal, but is not ready to play as he continues his recovery from the knee injury which ended his first campaign at Old Trafford.

We don’t really know what Kevin Wimmer is truly capable of in the Premier League, but his £18m move to the Potters may just tell us. He’s likely to make his debut from the start against Manchester United.

Back once again in the white of Swansea following a £12m switch from Manchester City, Bony will be required to replace the goals of Fernando Llorente, following the Spaniard’s move to Tottenham. He’s likely to start.

This one was a transfer window surprise, with the Portuguese swapping the Allianz Arena and Bayern Munich for south Wales. He’s also likely to be involved, possibly from the bench, thankfully wearing No 35, after his original plan of wearing 85 was blocked by the Premier League.

Tottenham’s new right back arrived from Paris Saint-Germain following a battle to win a work visa, due to a prior assault conviction, but he’s going to have to wait for a debut behind Kieran Trippier.

The Spaniard arrived from Swansea as primary back-up for hotshot striker Harry Kane, far an away the club’s first choice. He’ll begin his Tottenham career from the bench.

The new signing, brought in from Estudiantes for £8m, is essentially a younger, less experienced version of Eric Dier, meaning he faces a battle to make it into the side.

Marco Silva’s side have shipped just five goals in their first four games in all competitions, as part of an unbeaten start, but Marco Silva clearly feels he needs defensive help. Zeegelaar has arrived for £2.8m from Sporting Lisbon to fill a gap left by suspended Miguel Britos.

Wague, brought in on loan from Udinese will also help while Karnezis is no more than a back-up.

Brought in from Arsenal for a fee of £7m, the full-back is likely to slide straight into the West Brom side for their visit to Brighton.

The Paris Saint-Germain loanee was a real transfer coup for the Baggies and his quality means he is surely certain to slot straight into Tony Pulis’s starting line-up.

Virgil van Dijk available for Southampton selection after returning to first-team training

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is available for Southampton’s Premier League clash with Watford on Saturday after returning to first-team training this week.

The Dutchman was the subject of intense transfer speculation over the summer and was most notably linked with a move to Liverpool, who were forced to issue a public apology in June for an improper approach for the defender.

Van Dijk had been training on his own after handing in a transfer request at the start of August, citing previous conversations with club officials and manager Mauricio Pellegrino over his “desire to leave the club in search of a new challenge”.

He added that he wanted to “play European football again and challenge for major honours” while saying he had been “left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale”.

Chelsea and Manchester City were also credited with an interest in the 26-year-old, who has not played for the first-team since suffering an ankle injury in Southampton’s 3-0 win over Leicester in January, but no move materialised as the transfer window closed on Thursday.

However, Van Dijk has been back in training with the rest of the first-team squad as he continues his recovery from injury and will be available for selection this weekend as Premier League action returns after the international break.

Southampton have taken five points from their opening three Premier League games this season but did suffer an early exit in the Carabao Cup at the hands of Wolves last month.
