Van Dijk back training among first team players at Saints

Show/hide article…

WANTAWAY centre-back Virgil van Dijk is now back training among first team players as part of his normal training programme, the Daily Echo understands.

The 26-year-old’s situation remains the same with Mauricio Pellegrino expected to provide an update on Saints’ stance on the Dutchman when he faces the media in his pre-Watford press conference on Thursday.

For now Van Dijk, it is understood, is back with first team players as part of his usual routine, which includes group and individual work.

Van Dijk has been training alone since July, having told the club he wanted to leave.

The situation then escalated last month with the Dutchman submitting a transfer request alongside a strongly-worded statement as he agitated for a move away.

But now the transfer window has closed with Van Dijk very much still a Saints player.

There has been a period of impasse with the defender unable to force through an exit until January at the earliest.

Van Dijk and the rest of the players not out on international duty were all given time off over the weekend, but have now reported back for light training ahead of Watford’s visit to St Mary’s in the Premier League on Saturday.

It is understood the club are waiting to see how things will develop when the full squad comes back together, with Van Dijk and the club’s stance unclear at this point.

Pellegrino stated that he only wanted players who are 100 per cent committed to Saints and that stance is unlikely to have changed.

It will therefore be up to Van Dijk to come back from his time off committed and ready to come back to the fold when full training gets under way later in the week.

Liverpool and Chelsea held an interest in the Netherlands international throughout the summer but a bid never materialised.

Saints continually stated that he was not for sale despite the player’s attempts to leave.

If Van Dijk is to come back to full training it may be some time before he returns to competitive action and may well need to be given playing time for the under-23s before making a first-team comeback.

Van Dijk last played a competitive match nearly eight months ago, having missed all of Saints’ pre-season programme because of the transfer saga.

The rest of the Saints team have left the door wide open for Van Dijk to come back to the fold, with captain Steven Davis reiterating several times that he’d be welcomed back with open arms.

Van Dijk returns to Southampton first team training after failed move

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has returned to first team training following a failed summer transfer to Liverpool.

The Dutchman trained away from the Saints’ first team for the duration of the summer, and refused to go on pre-season tour with the side.

Instead Van Dijk remained in England, training with the Under-23 squad and working alone on his fitness with club staff.

Van Dijk found himself at the centre of one of the biggest transfer dramas of the summer, with his heart seemingly set on a move to Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp had met with the defender at the end of the 2016-17 season, in a meeting which later led to Liverpool issuing a public apology to Southampton and ‘dropping all interest’ in the player.

The Dutchman later handed in a transfer request in order to push through a move, in which he issued a long statement citing his desire to play European football and test himself at the highest level.

‘I am incredibly ambitious and want to achieve as much as I possibly can to fulfil my potential in what is a very short career as a professional footballer,’ Van Dijk wrote.

'I want to play European football again and challenge for major honours and as such I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist.

‘I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed.’

Southampton stood firm on their stance not to sell the player, who hasn’t featured in their side since injuring his ankle against Leicester City back in January.

Van Dijk is now expected to finally take his place back in the Saints starting XI, and make his first appearance back following the international break.

Virgil Van Dijk back in Southampton training after transfer window exile

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has taken the first steps towards reintegrating himself into full training with the main Southampton squad but is still understood to be several weeks away from match fitness.

The Holland centre-back very publicly declared his desire to leave during the transfer window but, having decided at the start of the summer that no key players would be permitted to leave, Southampton rebuffed interest from a series of clubs, most notably Liverpool.

Van Dijk was deeply unhappy with Southampton’s stance and concerns over his state of mind meant that he became detached from first-team training and missed most of pre-season as well as Southampton’s opening four matches of the season.

Southampton’s refusal to sell was always founded on a belief that Van Dijk, who signed a contract only last year until 2022, would have no choice but to accept the situation once the transfer window closed. Van Dijk stressed that he never refused to train and has rejected any suggestion that his behaviour warranted an attempted club disciplinary sanction.

Liverpool and Chelsea target back training with Southampton first-team

Show/hide article…

Guess who is back with the Southampton first-team again.

After being told to train away from his team-mates by manager Mauricio Pellegrini, following weeks of speculation surrounding his future, Virgil van Dijk is now back in contention and could make a shock return against Watford on Saturday.

The Dutch star has been forced to miss the start of the season after Pellegrini felt his star defender was not 100% mentally right to join the first-team squad.

Liverpool and Chelsea were strongly linked with a move for the Dutch star who handed in a transfer request at the start of August and was expected to make a big money move before the end of the transfer window.

But the 26-year-old has remained with the south coast club and is now hoping to get his career back on track.

Van Dijk can be seen pictured alongside Charlie Austin and Jeremy Pied during a training session at their Staplewood Complex.

Southampton fans would love to see Van Dijk regain the form which saw him become of their star players last season and will hope he can put aside the speculation that dominated the headlines over the summer.

Virgil van Dijk back in Southampton training after transfer window misery

Show/hide article…

The Dutch centre-back publicly declared his desire to leave St. Mary’s during the transfer window but the Saints stood firm on their stance that no key players would be allowed to depart. Van Dijk was subject to interest from numerous top clubs, most notably Liverpool, but is now back in training with his team-mates ahead of this weekend’s clash with Watford. The 26-year-old stressed that he never refused to train but concerns over his state of mind meant the defender became detached from first-team training and missed all of pre-season.

He is also yet to feature in any of Southampton’s opening four matches of the season. Van Dijk has been recovering from an ankle injury he sustained in January. He will continue to follow an individual fitness programme before training as normal with his team-mates when they return from international duty.

“Van Dijk is now back training with the first team” The former Celtic man looks set to put his summer troubles behind him and put himself back in the shop window ahead of January’s transfer window. Van Dijk, who is valued at around £60m, is likely to attract interest once the transfer window rolls back around but Southampton intend to keep him until at least next summer. The player’s current contract runs until 2022 meaning Southampton will not let him leave on the cheap.

Lemina fires Gabon to victory

Show/hide article…

Just a few days after losing 3-0 at home to the same opponents, Lemina and his teammates went to Bouake and secured a memorable victory.

Saints midfielder Lemina provided the decisive moment for the Panthers, with a stunning 25-yard strike across goal that found the far corner in the 29th minute.

The goal followed Axel Meye’s 19th-minute effort, and, although Ivory Coast pulled one back just before the hour mark through Maxwell Cornet, the visitors held on.

The result means Gabon stay third in Group C of the African qualifying section, but they are now just two points behind Ivory Coast, ahead of their final two games, away to Morocco and home to Mali.

Only the group winners will advance to the 2018 finals, in Russia, but Gabon are very much part of the mix again now.

Yoshida and Japan suffer defeat

Show/hide article…

Al-Ittihad winger Fahad Al Muwallad struck on 63 minutes after being introduced as a half-time substitute to ensure victory for the hosts in Jeddah.

Despite the defeat, Yoshida and Japan still finish top of Group B, having already confirmed their place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The result did, however, see Saudi Arabia secure second spot in the group and, subsequently, their place at the World Cup.

Australia, who occupied second place ahead of this game, dropped down to third on goal difference and will now face Syria in a play-off match.
