Charlie Austin keeps one eye on Southampton’s hectic winter schedule

Show/hide article…

Southampton striker Charlie Austin had one eye on the tough fixture schedule ahead after claiming a second-half equaliser in a 1-1 Premier League draw with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

The home side went ahead four minutes before the break as Ryan Fraser collected Andrew Surman’s pass just inside the 18-yard box and slotted the ball under a diving Fraser Forster for a half-time lead.

Saints’ pressure for an equaliser paid off just after the hour mark as Nathan Redmond’s low cutback found Austin, who fired home with a crisp finish for a share of the spoils.

Austin told Sky Sports: 'It was a good performance, we changed it around in the second half so it’s a point - we go into a big December now.

‘We deserved a goal if anything, we looked like we were going to nick it at the end but we had to be careful we weren’t going to throw it away either.’

Austin and Nathan Ake both went close with late headers but neither could find a winner, and Austin admitted he should have completed his brace.

He said: 'I think so, yeah. Front post, the same as last week, I think I should have scored but these things happen.

‘You’ve got to be in the position…I was in the right place at the right time. I just couldn’t put the ball in the net this time.’

Austin’s goal was his third in three games and, coming on only his second Premier League start this season, will offer Saints encouragement that he can be the solution to their scoring problems.

He added: 'I’m just in the team to score goals, work hard and try to help us to win games and that’s what I’ve been doing so far.

‘Unfortunately we didn’t get the three points today but - like I say - it’s a point away from home and we’ve got big games coming up.’

Ryan Bertrand jokes woeful throw-in was an attempt to waste time

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand hilariously attempted to spare his blushes on Sunday after he put an embarrassingly poor throw-in down to time wasting.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men came from 1-0 down to rescue a point through Charlie Austin after Ryan Fraser put the Cherries ahead.

However, it was Bertrand that was left red-faced as his attempted throw-in during stoppage time failed to even enter the field of play.

As the left back attempted to release the ball, he appeared to put a spin on it which sent it further out of play towards the crowd.

The gaffe was met with raucous cheers and laughter from Bournemouth supporters as Bertrand could only smirk.

Thinking on his feet though, the England international turned to the fans and winked before tapping his wrist to suggest the error was a deliberate act of time wasting.

Austin scored his third goal in seven days as Southampton salvaged a point from the south-coast derby.

The forward, who also scored twice against Everton last Sunday, swept home the equaliser in the second half.

The Cherries had taken the lead just before half time when Ryan Fraser fired past Fraser Forster.

A point takes Southampton up to 11th in the Premier League, while Bournemouth go above Newcastle into 14th.

Premier League referee Jon Moss apologises for costly error

Show/hide article…

Adam Smith claimed ref Jon Moss apologised for the penalty blunder which turned the Bournemouth defender into a marked man as a diver.

Cherries full-back Smith was scythed down by Saints winger Sofiane Boufal when the game was goalless – only to be shown a yellow card by Moss.

Smith said: “For the ref to book me doesn’t help because that’s my fifth yellow card this season. I spoke to him after and he apologised and said it was a penalty.

“I got to the ball just before him [Boufal], jumped to go over it and he took me down. I don’t mind him admitting it, but the fact is I can’t get the booking rescinded and I’ll miss the next game.”

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, whose struggling team have dropped 16 points at home this season, groaned: “It was a clear penalty. I could not believe what the ref did at the time and to see it again makes you feel even worse.

“It was one of the most stonewall penalties you’ll see all season, and to lose Adam to suspension for the next game is a huge blow.

“All I can ask is that the referee looks at it again and learns from it.”

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino hails Nathan Redmond impact

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino praised Nathan Redmond’s response to his face-off with Pep Guardiola after the midfielder helped Southampton rescue a point at Bournemouth.

Redmond was left on the bench by Pellegrino at the Vitality Stadium but came on at half-time to set-up Charlie Austin’s equaliser in an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Earlier, Ryan Fraser had given Bournemouth the lead just before the interval but Southampton were much-improved after Redmond’s introduction.

Pellegrino insisted he had no issue with Guardiola lecturing his player following Wednesday’s defeat to Manchester City and he was pleased with Redmond’s reaction.

“Am I pleased? Yes, for sure, Nathan is a very important player for us, but after the other day I made six changes because I expected more players to be fresh,” Pellegrino said.

“I think he played well and our reaction in the second half was good, especially in the wide areas where we arrived many times making chances.”

On whether Redmond felt any extra motivation, Pellegrino added: “I don’t think so, it’s just a comment, one comment will not change the performance of one player. The most important thing is how we played in the second half.”

Southampton have managed only 15 goals in 15 Premier League games so far this season but Austin’s form could offer a solution to their attacking problems.

Austin, making only his second league start this term, now has three goals in three matches and the 28-year-old posed a threat throughout.

“The confidence in one striker is something that is really difficult to train or to buy,” Pellegrino said.

“And you really need some experience, you need to score goals. When you’ve got some player in this moment it’s really good news.”

Eddie Howe aggrieved after Bournemouth denied penalty against Southampton

Show/hide article…

Eddie Howe believes Bournemouth were denied a clear penalty as his side drew 1-1 with Southampton in the south coast derby at the Vitality Stadium.

Adam Smith was booked for simulation by referee Jon Moss after he went to ground in the area under a challenge from Saints’ Sofiane Boufal midway through the first half while the score was 0-0, with Howe convinced that the Morocco international had impeded his player.

“For me it’s a stonewall penalty,” said Howe. "I think anywhere else on the pitch it’s a free-kick. I think the referee has probably tried to be a bit clever with it. As soon as Adam Smith got his toe to the ball before the defender I knew he was in trouble and that Adam was going to go over the leg because he had nowhere to go.

“I’m amazed it wasn’t given and it’s had a knock-on effect for us because now Adam Smith is suspended for the next game. I think it’s a really poor decision.”

Bournemouth took the lead when Ryan Fraser stroked home after Wesley Hoedt had been caught in possession by Josh King, but surrendered the advantage to a Charlie Austin goal just after the hour mark.

“I thought it was a very competitive game, quite even,” Howe said. "A lot of chances at both ends. That’s the pleasing things for us today, we really did work their goalkeeper. I thought, in general, our performance was totally different to Wednesday night. It was disappointing once we’d taken the lead not to win, but we have to acknowledge that Southampton did do very well at times second half.

“When you’ve defended so well for long periods of the game, to concede a scrappy goal… I didn’t think we cleared the cross particularity well and then we get caught on the ball outside our box. You’re going to pay for that with Charlie Austin against you.”

Bournemouth had been denied in the first half by a superb save from Fraser Forster when Steve Cook’s strike deflected off Jermain Defoe, and were presented with a golden chance to win the game in injury time as Nathan Ake rose to meet Jordon Ibe’s corner but the former Chelsea man could not keep his header down.

Howe added: "The pleasing thing is we did respond and we finished the game very strongly. Their goalkeeper had a good day today I thought he made some really good saves.

“It’s a big month every month in the Premier League, there’s no way to escape it. It’s a big month with the number of games that we have and the Carabao Cup game in there as well. It’s a big month for everyone connected with the Premier League. If you can get some points in this month it sets you up well, and if you don’t you’re going to be in trouble.”

Mauricio Pellegrino praises Southampton response at Bournemouth

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino praised Southampton’s second-half response as they fought back from a goal to draw at south-coast rivals Bournemouth.

Ryan Fraser fired the Cherries ahead just before half-time at the Vitality Stadium but Charlie Austin claimed a point with his third goal in two games in the second half.

“I was encouraged with our good reaction,” Pellegrino told Sky Sports. "Sometimes the opponents controlled the situation, sometimes we controlled things better than them.

"That is football, that is our job. Sometimes we have to control the ball to be more comfortable. They pressed well impressively at the beginning but our reaction was positive.

"It was a tight game but both teams wanted to win the game with their ideas. For the ninth time we made a mistake at this level that we cannot concede. But in the second half we were much better and we equalised.

“But until the end the game was up and down all the time with both teams showing they want to win. It’s one point, we obviously wanted three, but we couldn’t get them.”

Southampton made the short trip to Bournemouth looking to bounce back from their agonising defeat to Manchester City, which came three days after they thrashed Everton.

On the back foot and a goal down at the break, Pellegrino brought on Nathan Redmond at half-time, and the substitution had the desired effect as he laid on the equaliser for Austin.

“We were looking to have more pace and penetration in the space between the full-back and centre-back and to try something different,” the Saints boss added.

"The attitude in general in the second half was much better and it’s good news for us that Charlie continued scoring.

"We competed well against Everton - that was our best game. Against City and today was different.

“We approached the game with personality, started well but at the end of the first half they were better than us. But in the second half our reaction was really positive.”

Bournemouth 1-1 Southampton: Austin levels as Saints draw

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond followed his feisty face-off with Pep Guardiola by helping Southampton rescue a much-needed point against south coast rivals Bournemouth.

Redmond was left on the bench by Mauricio Pellegrino but came on at half-time to set up Charlie Austin’s equaliser after Ryan Fraser had earlier put the home side in front.

The 1-1 draw means Bournemouth climb to 14th in the table, five points above the relegation zone, while Southampton move up to 11th.

Redmond insisted Guardiola had been nothing but complimentary during their heated exchange after Wednesday’s last-gasp defeat to Manchester City but the midfielder might still have been keen to prove a point, particularly after Pellegrino left him out of the starting line-up here.

Austin’s goal was his third in three games and, coming on only his second Premier League start this season, will offer Saints encouragement that he can be the solution to their scoring problems.

Both teams could have claimed victory, with a penalty appeal each turned down in the first half, and a point will hardly satisfy either manager.

Bournemouth face Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City this month. Southampton go up against Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and United.

Eddie Howe and Pellegrino made 11 changes between them, with Bournemouth handing fit-again Junior Stanislas his first appearance since October while Jermain Defoe replaced Callum Wilson up front.

Southampton’s five changes included starts for Austin, Sofiane Boufal and Dusan Tadic.

Virgil van Dijk had an early sight of goal but headed wide before Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster made an excellent reaction save at the other end to deny Defoe.

Two penalty appeals, one at each end, had both sides feeling aggrieved. Boufal’s reckless sliding challenge deserved to concede a penalty but it was so mistimed that Adam Smith saw it coming and overplayed the fall. Referee Jon Moss booked him for diving.

Then at the other end, Tadic’s driven shot struck the arm of Simon Francis, but the Bournemouth defender had his back turned and Moss was probably right to wave away the appeals.

Neither team lacked for attacking endeavour but it was a defensive error that prompted the opener.

Wesley Hoedt had twice turned his way out of trouble but a third risk proved one too many as Josh King nicked possession before Andrew Surman rolled left to Fraser, who stroked the ball past Forster.

Redmond replaced James Ward-Prowse at half-time on the right of the attacking three and Southampton took charge after the restart.

Tadic almost converted Boufal’s cut-back before Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook dallied on the edge of the area. Oriol Romeu nipped in and fed wide to Redmond, whose low cross was steered home by Austin.

From there, both sides could have won it. Austin might have had a second if Ryan Bertrand had not over-hit a fairly simple final pass while substitute Wilson would have had an open net to hit but failed to control the rebound from King’s shot.

Austin and Nathan Ake both went close with late headers but neither could find a late winner.

Bournemouth 1-1 Southampton: Pellegrino sees signs of progress

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino believes the past week has proved that Saints are progressing under his management.

Saints have beaten Everton at St Mary’s, lost narrowly at league leaders Manchester City and drawn at neighbours Bournemouth to collect four points in the space of a week.

The nature of the performances have pleased Pellegrino as much as the results, and the Saints boss feels things are picking up.

He said: “I think so because we play different games, in different moods, and always competing well in different circumstances.

“Our performance was really competitive and with character and reacting in difficult moments.

“We have to look forward and use this reaction to learn for the future to don’t make this mistake because in the Premier League every single detail is very important.”

Saints fell behind at Bournemouth, but bagged a point when Charlie Austin netted a second half equaliser, however, they couldn’t quite manage to find a goal to collect all three points.

“I think it was a really tight game from the beginning and until the end,” reflected Pellegrino.

“At the end of the first half I think after scoring the opponent was a little bit better than us, but our reaction after scoring in the second half was really positive.

“I think we created a lot of chances and also we deserved to score another goal, but the opponent too.

“It was a nice game because both teams show from the beginning until the end that we want to win the game and I think we improve a little bit our opposition on the pitch second half and our reaction I have to take this conclusion that it was the most important thing.”

He added: “I think both teams try to show our style and defend how we play, attacking and up and down all the time.

“The way that in the Premier League the people is really careful about not conceding yellow cards or red cards because the advantage is really important.

“It was intense but always with good intensity, positive intensity.”

For Austin it was three goals in his last two starts and Pellegrino smiled: “The confidence in one striker is something that is really difficult to train or to buy.

“You need some experience, you need to score goals to complete your job and when you have got some players in this moment it is really good news.”
