Austin strikes as Saints fight back for derby draw

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin secured a comeback 1-1 draw for Southampton in an entertaining south coast derby at AFC Bournemouth.

After Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk headed wide and Fraser Forster produced a fantastic reaction save to deny Jermain Defoe, AFC Bournemouth took a first-half lead.

Ryan Fraser slotted in from Andrew Surman’s pass after Saints defender Wesley Hoedt had been caught in possession.

But Austin, who made his name at the Cherries’ non-league neighbours Poole Town, scored from Nathan Redmond’s cutback on 61 minutes.

Austin headed narrowly over as Saints pushed for a second but the point leaves them 11th, two points and three places above their opponents.

Bournemouth 1-1 Southampton: Austin earns share of south coast spoils

Show/hide article…

For all the frothy-mouthed, arm-waving madness that went with his message, Pep Guardiola might just have had a point about the attacking qualities of Nathan Redmond the other night. They certainly changed this game.

Was it the Pep talk that did it? That would be wildly overstating the significance of their peculiar little chat last Wednesday.

But there can be no doubting the impact Redmond had on this match, given how toothless Southampton looked in the first 45 minutes while he sat on the bench and how effective they were once he came off it, with his side 1-0 down to a Ryan Fraser strike.

They were growing a little desperate by that point, having been too predictable in their most attacks as they drifted towards a fourth defeat in five.

What happened next was delightfully close to the ideal script, with the winger bringing some sparkle and delivering the assist for Charlie Austin around the hour mark. He might have snatched the win, too, with a skidding drive that faded wide and a wider performance that changed the dynamic of the entire match.

But a point it was and for both teams that was probably about right. For Southampton, it allows a degree of momentum after the disappointment of their late defeat against City and it also develops the argument that Austin should play a more active role in the side after his third goal in two starts.

Considering the side’s struggles with scoring – just 23 goals in their past 25 league games – the 28-year-old would seem to offer the sharp edge that they lack.

Mauricio Pellegrino said: ‘The confidence of a striker is something that is really difficult to train or to buy. You need to score goals. So when you’ve got a player in this moment, like Austin, it’s really good news.’

For Bournemouth, there was a sense of irritation that went beyond them giving up a lead, with Adam Smith booked by Jonathan Moss for diving when appealing for a clear-cut penalty against Sofiane Boufal in the first half.

The direct cost was not significant because Fraser scored not long afterwards, but longer term they have the problem of an unjust suspension for five bookings.

Eddie Howe was angry with the call, saying: 'I think it’s a clear penalty, I really do. I can’t work out what the referee has seen.

'That’s football, you live and die by those decisions and I think he’s got it wrong.

‘It’s hugely disappointing because not only do we not get the penalty but we lose Adam to suspension and it has a knock-on effect to the next game.’

Smith revealed that Moss had apologised to him after the game and admitted his mistake. He said: ‘I spoke to him after and he apologised and said it was a penalty. I don’t mind him admitting it but the fact that he booked me and can’t get it rescinded, that means I’ll miss the next game.’

Howe, like Pellegrino, accepted a draw was fair, but it will feel like more of a missed opportunity for Bournemouth due to the way they dominated before Redmond came on. Indeed, it was telling that Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster was probably the best player on the pitch owing to the notable saves he made from Jermain Defoe, Nathan Ake and Junior Stanislas.

Fraser found a way through and Howe is convinced the Scot is capable of lifting his side away from the lower reaches of the table.

‘He has had a slightly stuttering start to the season and this was a sign of him returning to form,’ he said. ‘If he can, then he is a huge player for us.’

Austin strikes again to earn point

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men started well but found themselves behind three minutes before the break as Ryan Fraser finished smartly from a pass by Saints Academy graduate Andrew Surman.

But the visitors improved after the interval and deservedly drew level just after the hour when half-time substitute Nathan Redmond picked out Austin to score with a first-time shot from 12 yards.

Austin might have added to his tally, heading over from a Ryan Bertrand cross after another header of his had struck the crossbar from an offside position.

Saints boss Pellegrino made six changes to his side who came within a whisker of ending Manchester City’s 19-match winning run at the Etihad on Wednesday night.

The boss reverted largely to the team who thrashed Everton at St Mary’s, as Steven Davis, James Ward-Prowse, Dušan Tadić, Sofiane Boufal and Austin all returned, while Jérémy Pied replaced the injured Cédric, sidelined by a hamstring problem.

Saints, sporting a special edition third kit with white shirts, red shorts and white socks, started with more purpose than their struggling hosts.

Bertrand found himself in an advanced position down the left and cleverly resisted the urge to cross, instead slipping a disguised pass into the box for Tadić, whose cutback only just eluded Austin.

Then Virgil van Dijk, under pressure from compatriot Nathan Ake, headed wide from a Ward-Prowse corner before Tadić was off target from Pied’s cross.

Bournemouth had posed no threat whatsoever but suddenly came to life in the 20th minute.

Right-back Adam Smith stepped on to a dropping ball and cracked a 20-yard shot that was heading closer to the corner flag than the Saints goal until Jermain Defoe stuck out a foot and redirected it on target.

What followed was a brilliant instinctive save from Fraser Forster, who stuck out an arm and somehow diverted the ball over the crossbar.

From the ensuing corner, Forster saved again from Ake down by his left post as the home fans found their voice.

Saints responded through a speculative shot from distance from Pied, but Bournemouth were enjoying a good spell and felt certain they should have been avoided a penalty on the half-hour mark.

From a corner taken short, Surman’s pass to Smith tempted Boufal to make a sliding tackle in his own box.

The Moroccan did not get any of the ball, but referee Jonathan Moss decided Smith was already on his way down and booked the Bournemouth man for a dive.

Saints threatened to make the most of the home team’s sense of injustice when Austin peeled away at the back post to meet a Ward-Prowse cross with a header back across Asmir Begovic, who did well to push it away, albeit only to Tadić, who wanted handball when his shot struck Simon Francis on the arm.

This was an evenly-contested game that suddenly swung in favour of the Cherries when Joshua King robbed Wesley Hoedt of possession as the Dutchman slipped inside his own half.

King found Surman, whose first-time lay-off was perfect for Fraser to dispatch without breaking stride, leaving Forster no chance with a firm side-footed finish from 15 yards.

Still there was time for Saints to hit back before the interval, only for Boufal to blaze over when left unmarked from Bertrand’s low cross.

Pellegrino’s response was to introduce Nathan Redmond for Ward-Prowse at half-time.

The substitute immediately found Boufal on the left corner of the box, who forced Begovic into a plunging one-handed save.

It was end to end stuff. King’s scuffed shot bobbled just wide with Junior Stanislas lurking at the far post, before Stanislas’ effort deflected off Davis and needed Forster to be alert down to his left.

Back came Saints, as Pied’s first-time pass found Boufal, whose cutback just needed a tap in from Davis or Tadić but did not get a touch from either.

The equaliser finally arrived in the 61st minute, as Oriol Romeu won the ball inside the final third and fed Redmond to his right, whose low cross picked out the unmarked Austin to score with a low shot at the near post.

Austin was cursing his luck when Bertrand got in behind the Bournemouth defence but was unable to pick out the goal-hungry striker with a low ball across the six-yard box.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe made a double substitution in a bid to turn the tide, but his team were unable to halt the shift in momentum.

Austin headed against the crossbar but was flagged offside before sending another header over from a Bertrand cross he could have no complaints about, while Boufal saw a shot deflected over.

The one moment of alarm at the other end came courtesy of King, forcing a sharp save form Forster, whose parry carried just enough force to ensure substitute Callum Wilson could not react to the rebound.

The final chance fell the way of Ake, but Saints would not be victims of another stoppage-time winner as his header floated over the top, and the spoils were shared.

Bournemouth 1-1 Southampton: Austin equaliser cancels out Fraser’s opener

Show/hide article…

All square in the New Forest derby, surely the least rancorous rivalry in English football.

Charlie Austin’s crisply-struck equaliser earned Saints a deserved share of the spoils after Ryan Fraser’s first-half opener for the Cherries, and a point apiece was about right.

One man’s New Forest ponies is another man’s donkey rides on the beach, but a draw will do little to settle Bournemouth’s nerves with a challenging run of fixtures awaiting them later this month.

Virgil Van Dijk, showing few pangs of wanting to play his football elsewhere, headed James Ward-Prowse’s corner just wide after 12 minutes, beating the turf in recognition that he should have done better.

But Saints keeper Fraser Forster, discarded by England, was twice called into thrilling action at other end in a matter of seconds, tipping Jermain Defoe’s close-range effort over the top and then beating out Nathan Ake’s stooping header.

And Bournemouth were mightily aggrieved when referee Jon Moss booked Adam Smith for diving in the box when he was pole-axed by Sofiane Boufal’s reckless challenge instead of awarding a penalty on the half-hour.

The Cherries developed a reputation for toppling over easily when they won the Championship title three seasons ago, but this was not even close. It was the clearest of clear-cut penalties, and Moss’s interpretation of the incident was perverse, if not actually embarrassing.

Asmir Begovic beat out Austin’s header as Southampton counted their blessings, but four minutes before the break Saints’ luck ran out.

Josh King robbed Wesley Hoedt, who was dicing with danger once too often on the edge of his own box, and Ryan Fraser picked his spot from 12 yards, threading his low finish through Van Dijk’s legs and beating Forster low to his left.

It was Fraser’s first Premier League goal since Bournemouth’s mad 3-3 draw with Arsenal last January and the home side deserved their advantage at the break.

But Boufal, who had spooned one decent chance over the top, was close to an equaliser within two minutes of the restart as the Moroccan tested Begovic’s reflexes.

As Saints went through the gears, an equaliser looked inevitable – and it arrived, from a predictable source, 15 minutes into the second period.

Nathan Redmond, a half-time replacement for the ineffective Ward-Prowse, was on the receiving end of some animated advice from Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola in midweek after Southampton’s last-gasp heartbreak at the Etihad.

And Redmond had more praise ringing in his ears as his low centre picked out Austin, and the Saints marksman drilled his fourth goal of the season with an assured finish.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe probably knew it was coming: six years ago, at Burnley, he had signed the former bricklayer.

And Austin was close to a winner 10 minutes from the end, rising to meet Ryan Bertrand’s cross at the near post but heading just over the target.

Charlie Austin secures Southampton share of the spoils at Bournemouth

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin strengthened his case for a regular place in Mauricio Pellegrino’s starting eleven with the second half goal that cancelled out Ryan Fraser first half effort to ensure Southampton avoided defeat at their South Coast neighbours.

Austin scored twice on his first league start of the season against Everton seven days previously and, recalled after being named on the bench for the midweek trip to Manchester City, provided Pellegrino with another reminder of his goal threat with a first time shot after being teed up by Nathan Redmond, fresh from his on-field, post-match chat with City manager Pep Guardiola.

Pellegrino would have been even more impressed had Austin shown more composure with a late header, but in a game when both sides were denied contentious penalty appeals, a draw reflected the balance of the game. Bournemouth benefited from a shocking error by Saints centre-back Wesley Hoedt in the build-up to Fraser’s goal but will feel they created enough chances to harbour their own feelings of having been hard done to.

Both managers opted to refresh their starting line-ups following midweek defeats with Howe bringing in five new faces, including Jermain Defoe for his first start since late October, while Pellegrino went further, making six changes following the narrow defeat to Manchester City.

Howe had made it clear he was unhappy following Wednesday’s defeat to Burnley, Bournemouth’s fourth defeat in seven home league games, just two less than they suffered in the whole of last season. The manager knows his side need to recover that kind of form at the Vitality Stadium if they are to avoid being drawn into a long battle against relegation and the importance of getting something from this game was reinforced by a fixture list that includes meetings with the two Manchester clubs and Liverpool after next weekend’s trip to face an improving Crystal Palace side.

It was Southampton, though, who made the first impression on the game when Virgil Van Dijk escaped from his marker and connected with a free header from James Ward-Prowse’s corner, only to wastefully head over Asmir Begovic’s bar.

That proved to be a rare first half opening for Pellegrino’s side. Bournemouth worked their way into the game and would have taken a 20th minute lead but for an outstanding one-handed save from Fraser Forster who reacted superbly to deflect the ball to safety when Defoe redirected Smith’s shot from just eight yards out. The keeper then completed an impressive minute’s work when he saved well from Nathan Ake’s diving header following the resulting corner.

Smith again found himself a central figure in the game in 31st minute when his attempt to convince referee Jon Moss he should have been awarded a penalty earned him a yellow card for diving. The full-back paid the price for launching himself acrobatically in the air following Sofiane Boufal’s mistimed tackle when his claim would have appeared far more convincing had he maintained his run and tripped over the Southampton player’s leg.

That contentious decision was matched by a second disputed penalty claim shortly after Dusan Tadic’s shot struck Simon Francis’s arm. Television replays suggested the Bournemouth captain was fortunate.

Bournemouth, though, were the dominant side and forced the lead four minutes before the interval after a glaring error by Hoedt. The Dutch defender was guilty of over-playing the ball inside his own half and was caught out by Josh King’s persistence that forced a slip from the centre-back. King squared for Andrew Surman who picked out Fraser’s forward run, playing the ball into the winger’s path who placed a right-footed shot beyond Forster.

Pellegrino decided a change was needed and introduced Nathan Redmond at the break for James Ward-Prowse. The switch helped spark a much improved display from the visitors and they worked their way level in the 61st minute when the substitute’s low cross from the right found Austin whose first time shot past Begovic.

The striker would have added a second three minutes later had Ryan Bertrand not miscued a low cross when Austin was waiting unmarked in the six-yard box. But the forward only had himself to blame for failing to add to his tally when he directed a near post header over the bar with Bertrand again the provider.

‘Redmond assist…inspired by his Pep talk’ - Fans react as Southampton winger makes impact off the bench

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond has been enjoying his share of time in the public eye this week.

The Southampton winger was involved in a heated exchange with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on Wednesday after his side slumped to a late 2-1 defeat.

Redmond revealed Guardiola was ‘complimentary’ towards him at the full-time whistle at the Etihad Stadium and welcomed advice from ‘one of the world’s best managers.’

But Redmond had to make do with a place on the bench as he watched his side fall behind against Bournemouth in the south coast derby.

However, Redmond made a telling impact as a substitute as his side secured a 1-1 draw, and fans were quick to point their praise towards a certain Pep Guardiola.

Bournemouth 1-1 Southampton: Charlie Austin rescues point in south-coast clash

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin continued his fine goalscoring form as he salvaged a 1-1 draw for Southampton at south-coast rivals Bournemouth.

The Saints frontman swept home his third goal in two starts on 61 minutes, cancelling out Ryan Fraser’s 42nd-minute opener for the Cherries, who felt aggrieved not to win a penalty after Sofiane Boufal’s challenge on Adam Smith.

Austin spurned a glorious chance to win the game 10 minutes from time, as too did Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake, but there was to be no winner as both sides had to settle for a point.

Virgil van Dijk nearly capped Southampton’s bright start with the opener on 12 minutes, but his header curled agonisingly wide.

Bournemouth awoke from their slumber on 20 minutes as Lewis Cook’s fierce drive deflected off Jermain Defoe and drew a stunning point-blank save from Fraser Forster, who was on hand to thwart Ake’s header a minute later.

Bournemouth had strong appeals for a penalty turned away on the half-hour mark when Boufal lunged in on Smith, but referee Jon Moss booked Smith for simulation and Defoe for his protests.

In an almost retaliatory move, Charlie Daniels took matters into his own hands, unleashing a fierce drive which came within inches of taking the lead on 39 minutes.

The breakthrough finally came three minutes later as Josh King caught Wesley Hoedt in possession, shipped the ball out to Fraser, and he stroked the ball beyond Forster.

After Boufal spurned a glorious chance to haul Saints level before the break, the visitors took control in the second period and finally equalised as Austin fired substitute Nathan Redmond’s low cross home at the near post.

Southampton overturned a deficit to win at the Vitality Stadium last season but there was to be no winner this time around as Austin and Ake headed presentable chances over the target in the closing stages.

The driving force behind Southampton’s revival, Bertrand registered game-high figures of six crosses and three chances created. His defensive qualities are well known but it’s his strength going in the opposite direction which sets him apart. Had Austin have been more ruthless in front of goal, Bertrand’s attack prowess would have yielded a victory.

Eddie Howe: “For me it’s a stonewall penalty. As soon as Adam Smith got his toe to the ball before the defender I knew he was in trouble and that Adam was going to go over the leg because he had nowhere to go. I’m amazed it wasn’t given. It was disappointing once we’d taken the lead not to win, but we have to acknowledge that Southampton did do very well at times, second half.”

Mauricio Pellegrino: “I was encouraged with our good reaction. The attitude in general in the second half was much better and it’s good news for us that Charlie continued scoring.”

Both sides travel to London in the next round of Premier League fixtures. Bournemouth head to Crystal Palace on Saturday, while Southampton make the trip to Arsenal for Sunday’s early kick-off.

Pied: “A frustrating result”

Show/hide article…

After a “sloppy” first-half performance, Saints regrouped after in the interval, equalised through Charlie Austin and, for Jérémy, perhaps ought to have gone on to win the game at the Vitality Stadium.

“We showed a good reaction after the break and played with a better attitude and created more chances.

“The points could have gone either way today. We were poor in the first half, particularly the way we conceded the first goal which was really avoidable.”

Austin struck just after the hour to get the visitors back into contention and Pied believes that from that moment, Saints showed a level of performance that needs to be carried forward in the coming weeks.

“This is the Premier League, a derby, so it was important that we showed some character in the second half. We are frustrated, and rightly so, because we wanted a better result than a draw. Our performance in the second half was strong and that is the kind of level we need to keep going forward.

“Charlie’s equaliser was well deserved and we could have gone on to get all three points in the end.”

Austin feeling the scoring momentum

Show/hide article…

The striker celebrated his first Premier League start of the season with a brace against Everton last weekend and was on target again in the 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.

Saints fell behind to Ryan Fraser’s first-half opener, but Austin buried a low cross from Nathan Redmond in the 61st minute to earn a point at the Vitality Stadium.

“I’m in the team to score goals, work hard and help us win games,” he said.

“Luckily enough that’s what I’ve been doing – unfortunately we didn’t get three points today, but it’s a point away from home and we’ve got some big games coming up. It’s been a good week.

“I could’ve had two, maybe three – I should’ve scored the header and there was another one when if Ryan’s (Bertrand’s) cross had found me then I would’ve made it 2-1, but we deserved something out of the game.

“I’m just trying to score as many goals as I can and I know I can do it.

“At QPR I scored 18 (in the Premier League) and last year I was flying until I got a big injury.

“Now I feel I’m getting a lot of momentum behind me and I feel confident every time I go out on the pitch. I’m a goalscorer and that’s what I love to do.”

Pellegrino pleased by Saints’ character

Show/hide article…

Ryan Fraser put the hosts ahead shortly before half-time, but Saints emerged the more purposeful and carried the most threat in a second-half which saw Charlie Austin net his third goal in a week.

“I think the game was really tight because both teams were trying to win from the beginning until the end,” Pellegrino reflected.

“At the end of the first-half, maybe they were a little bit better than us after they scored but our reaction in the second-half was positive.

“Our attitude and our football was better and after we equalised both teams tried to win it.”

The result capped a busy week for Pellegrino’s men, having faced Everton and Manchester City.

And the boss was pleased with how his side showed their versatility to three differing encounters.

He added: “I think it was positive in our performances. The three games were all a little bit different but some of them, we played in different ways.

“I think the good thing is we adapted to different circumstances and now we have to look forward.”
