1963: John F Kennedy is laid to rest

The funeral of the assassinated President, John F Kennedy, has taken place in Washington.

An estimated 800,000 Americans lined the streets to watch the coffin’s procession from the Capitol, where the president’s body had lain in state since yesterday

1989

Chris Nicholl’s attacking machine turned on the style again, hitting Luton Town for 6. 2 goals from Paul Rideout and Rod Wallace and one a piece from Alan Shearer and Matt Le Tissier, brought a 6-3 win at The Dell.

1983: £25m gold heist at Heathrow
An armed gang has carried out Britain’s largest ever robbery at London’s Heathrow Airport.
Over £25m worth of gold bullion bound for the Far East was stolen from the Brinks Mat warehouse, about one mile (1.6km) outside the airport perimeter, between 0630 and 0815 GMT.

Police have said a group of at least six men overcame the guards and successfully disabled a huge array of electronic security devices.

Insurers have offered a reward of £2m for information leading to the recovery of the 6,800 gold bars - which are all identifiable by refiners’ stamps.

The members of the gang - who were all armed and wearing balaclavas - also stole £100,000 worth of cut and uncut diamonds.

Inside information

They dressed in security uniforms to get into the warehouse and then terrorised the guards into giving them the alarm codes.

2003:

Saints and their supporters were plunged into mourning with the death of the club legend Ted Bates at the age of 85. He signed for the club from Norwich on his 19th birthday and stayed for an unprecedented spell of 66 years, a record which will surely never be equalled.

He served the club as a striker, coach, manager, chief executive, director, vice-president and president earning the freedom of the city and an MBE. After receiving the MBE he simply said. “If you deserve a medal for doing something you love all your life then I am very fortunate. A lot of people have said to me it was long overdue but I honestly don’t see it like that. I feel very privileged to have been part of this great club for so long. I should be thanking them for having me.”

1990: Tories choose Major for Number 10

John Major is to be Britain’s new prime minister after winning the Conservatives’ leadership election.

Mr Major, 47, will visit the Queen at 1030 BST tomorrow to be formally appointed and will return to Downing Street as the youngest British leader this century.

Currently serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Major did not achieve the majority required for an absolute victory, but the margin was clear enough for his rivals to withdraw and a third ballot was avoided.

Mr Major - who has been in parliament for only 11 years - said he was enormously encouraged so many had voted for him and would discharge his responsibilities to the best of his ability.

Missed this as I was in Bali. (Pre-Goating, The Goat)

What a great bit of control by Armstrong and an even better finish!

28/11/81. Good game to watch in the middle of The Kop. I didn’t cheer until I got back into our car.

I was there!! We certainly went ape sh!t in the away section, made all the better by it being scored right in front of us. Liverpool were Champions that season. They beat us 3-2 at The Dell, but we still had the moral high ground with that incredible 20 one touch passing move which I think won Goal of The season (if not it bloody well should have!!).

What an era to be watching The Saints, the next week was one of the most amazing games I went to at The Dell … the 3-2 Kevin Keegan disallowed goal win over Man Utd.

Today is the birthday of one of the greatest ever Southampton players …Micks testimonial. Happy Birthday and take a bow Mick Channon.

Indeed…saw his first game for Saint’s in '66…he’s younger than me…by 6 days. His testimonial game was the best time I ever had at The Dell and very probably the largest crowd ever to watch a Saints home game.

1990: Tearful farewell from Iron Lady
Britain has a new prime minister for the first time in more than 11 years.
Margaret Thatcher formally tendered her resignation to the Queen early this morning after leaving Downing Street for the last time.

John Major was elected her successor yesterday by Conservative Party members.

The woman dubbed as the Iron Lady during her premiership made her last tearful speech as the leader of the country from the doorstep of Number 10.

1995

Why do Saints fall for hoaxes? The players assembled at The Dell ready to head to Reading for a league cup tie only to be told the match was off due to torrential rain that afternoon. It was only after the players dispersed that someone thought to check with the host club. In fact it was a wind up, the match was still on and, in the days before mobile phones were commonplace, Saints had to try and get the players back. They finally arrived at Elm Park half an hour before kick off, with the players having to change on the bus en route to the ground.

Saints lost 2-1

29/11/80. Man Utd 1 Saints 1.

As we took up our “neutral position” on the half way line on the Scoreboard Paddock Terrace, we heard the team changes announced.

“For No.5 Chris Nicholl, read Reuben Agboola.” Cue much excitement as he was a mate of mine.

“For No. 7 Kevin Kee…” Cue much cheering from the citizens of Somerset, Devon and South Wales. " Whose Wallace?" we were asked. “Dunno”.

5 minutes later the teams trotted out and in the middle was a pint-sized, dark chappie, who I suddenley remembered playing for Southampton A in the Hampshire League, the previous weekend as the game was played at the BTC Ground in Stoneham Lane, next door to where I lived.

" My God, he’s a 16 year old apprentice, who hasn’t even played for the Reserves! He must have been brought up here as a treat, for getting a hat trick and to carry the kit. He’s bloody quick."

It transpired that half the team had got food poisoning and Nicholl and KK were the worse. Danny was up against a Yugoslav international and ran him ragged. Utd were allowed to equalise, in the 5th minute of non-existant injury time, 6 years before Fergie-time started.

1975: Graham Hill killed in air crash
One of Britain’s greatest motor racing drivers has been killed in a plane crash in south-east England.
Graham Hill, 46, who retired from the sport in July 1975, was killed instantly along with the four other occupants in his Piper Aztec - all members of the Embassy Hill team.

Hill was piloting the plane when he clipped a row of trees on Arkley golf course in Hertfordshire, just before 2200 GMT.

1985-

Saints centenary celebrations proved a bit of a damp squib. Having begun life on November 21st 1885, the club wanted the home match against Everton to be a big party. However Saints lost 2-3 despite Saints taking a first half lead through Cockerill and again regaining the lead through Moran. Even worse was the fact that the pitch was too wet for 100 local school children to spell 100 on the pitch, while a hot air balloon failed to get airborne. It was right up there with the pre-match fireworks which had burned a small crater in the corner of the pitch on the opening day of the season!

1982: Animal activists bomb Downing Street

A letter bomb has exploded inside the British Prime Minister’s London residence.

Margaret Thatcher was in 10 Downing Street when the device exploded but was not hurt in the blast.

One of her staff was slightly burnt in the attack.

30th November 1940…

This day 75 years ago the face of Southampton changed forever. The Luftwaffe dropped over 700 high explosive and incendiary bombs on the beautiful provincial town. This is a link to an OS blog entry from 2010…

Great woman and started the change in cival rights. I put the whole story as it is a fantastic one.

1955: Black woman challenges race law

A black woman has been arrested by police in Montgomery, Alabama, after refusing to give up her seat on the bus to a white person.

Mrs Rosa Parks now faces a fine for breaking the segregation laws which say black Americans must vacate their seats if there are white passengers left standing.

It is not the first time Mrs Parks, who is a seamstress, has defied the law on segregation.

In 1943 she was thrown off a bus for refusing to get on via the back door, which was reserved for black passengers. She became known to other drivers who sometimes refused to let her on.

Today Mrs Parks left Mongomery Fair, the department store where she was employed doing repairs on men’s clothing, as usual.

She said she was tired after work and suffered aches and pains in her shoulders, back and neck.

When she got on the bus she realised the driver was the same man, James Blake, who had thrown her off twelve years before.

As more white people got on and the seats filled up, he asked her to give up her seat and she refused.

He threatened to call the police and she told him to go ahead.

She was subsequently arrested and charged with violating segregation law.

She will now appear in court on Monday 5 December.

Mrs Parks is a youth leader of the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) and her husband, Raymond, a barber, has taken part in voter registration drives.

Segregation laws

Between them the couple have worked for many years to improve the lot of black Americans in the southern United States where rigid segregation laws have been in force since the end of the Civil War in 1865.

Last year a group of professional black woman in Montgomery, the Women’s Political Council, protested to the mayor about segregation on the buses, warning him they were planning a boycott.

The NAACP has also tried to challenge the laws on segregation in the courts and Mrs Parks has been involved in raising money to defend a 15-year-old student, Claudette Colvin, who was removed from a bus in March of this year for refusing to give up her seat to a white man.
