1982 - Mick Mills made his debut for Saints in a 1-1 draw at home to Nottingham Forest. Mills signed for £50k. We stole him from right under the nose of Sunderland, who had already called a press conference for the signing!

Lawrey took over from Ted Bates as Southampton manager.

19??

Ma BTripz is rushed to hospital, heavily pregnant and in labour. Some hours later a future leader in ramblings on a Saints forum somewhere in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the internet is unceremoniously ejected into the world!

Excuse the solipistic leaning of this post.

1997: Egyptian militants kill tourists at Luxor.

More than 60 people have been killed after an attack on a group of foreign tourists visiting a temple in southern Egypt.
The tourists’ bus was fired on as they visited the temple of Hatshepsut, one of the main attractions in the town of Luxor in southern Egypt.

Not sure the Sheffield press would be able to get away with that anymore!!

1967, A 16 date UK package tour with Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Move, The Nice and Amen Corner played at the City Hall, Sheffield. A review in the Sheffield Star noted: ‘Like an electrified golliwog, Jimi Hendrix threw himself into a live-wire act that featured his intricate guitar interpretation. Quite an Experience’. Pink Floyd also released their third single Apples And Oranges today in the UK.

1973 - Lawrie McMenemy’s first match in sole charge of the Saints finished 1-1 at home to Spurs. The game kicked off at 14:15 due to the government ban on using floodlights during the infamous miners strike and three-day working week. Later on in the season we were the first team to become the victim of the new 3 up, 3 down system.

1987: King’s Cross station fire ‘kills 27’

At least 27 people have died after a fire at King’s Cross station in central London.
The blaze reportedly began at about 1930 GMT in a machine room under a wooden escalator.

The escalator connected the Piccadilly line - one of five underground train routes which run through King’s Cross - with the mainline station.

The fire started as the evening rush hour was trailing off but hundreds of commuters were still in the station which is London’s busiest.

Many passengers were trapped underground as the escalator went up in flames.

More than 150 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze and searched for survivors.

But they were not able to bring the main fire under control until approximately 2150 GMT.

It is feared the death toll could reach 40 after a search of the station has been completed.

Would they have gone through if he did not do that? Or did the republic still have to score to win? I could look it up but cannot be arsed haha.

It was done during extra time and took France through, 2-1 on agg. Would have gone to pens otherwise.

That penalty was disgraceful.

But on reflection I think I may have finally got over the injustice of it…

That was a good watch!

I went to that game. Great day. Alcohol was involved. Warm, fuzzy memories.

# OnThisDay in 2010, # SaintsFC beat # PUFC 4-1 to climb into the League 1 play-off spots. What a goal by @ Rchap04!

As long as no-one mentions our game on this day in 1971, which I was at, we won’t have any trouble.

I think you and lifeintheslowlane are probably the only ones old enough to remember, mind you lifeintheslowlane has probably forgotten by now.
