Happened upon this box of matches on a bric-a-brac stall at Wickham Antiques Fair this morning.
Anyone else remember the Golden Eagle? The back of it was opposite Eastleigh train station, sort of behind the Crown Hotel(?) and it was one of the four or five Westmacott Inns, along with the George and Falcon in West Meon, Hunters in Swanmore, Cross Keys in Ropley plus (I think) another which eludes me. I loved those pubs, the food was brilliant. Platters for two with either half a roast chicken per person, or a knuckle of gammon or shoulder of lamb each. Their pizzas were the best I’ve ever had as well.

Saw several bands there in late 70’s early 80’s, including The Piranhas. Also played a seson for their Sunday PM footy team, who were crap, but we drank well before and after.

I pissed the landlord right off there one night in the pool league.
He won the toss, told me to break and I seven balled him.
Thought he was going to cry.

My great grandfather had a boatbuilding business in the mill before WWI and lived in a cottage adjacent (gone now, the site is the car park of the Jolly Sailor). He built a plane there too for an early aviator, Roland Moon
So you went in the Jolly for a beverage or three?
No…too early…before 10am.
And?
It’s never too early - just a late one from yesterday
just found this Fred… interesting ‘design’ there. Were they ever owned by German Immigrants post WWII? Did they do a rousing Horst Wessel at the end of an evening?

I asked directions from the station, they said down Leigh Road and third reich.
