High on a hill with a lonely Goatboy?

Never seen it either. But I could do quite a list of ‘classics’ that I’ve never seen.

Life is too short to waste on most of them inmho so don’t even bother with them .

From George Weahs’ cousin

It’s a remarkable performance and those Grinches who don’t like it or won’t watch till the end, humbug at ya and I hope your Turkey gets all dry and shrivelled

It’s a Wonderful life is about never losing hope no matter what as life is truly wonderful when you have folks who care for you and love you, what’s not to like?

George Bailey is the perennial sacrificer, always giving up his own dreams and desires to enable his a family or Friends or even his community to thrive at his own selfless expense…

Stewart really throws everything into it and his portrayal of the rapid disintegration into hopelessness and breakdown is heart breaking to watch… then Capra adds some light to what is becoming a dark film with Clarence the Angel.

Ironically it did not do very well when released, was not considered the classic it is today. It was a simple copyright mistake that meant it was not renewed in the 70s that meant it could be shown by anyone with out fees that meant a it was repeated somewhere every year that saw it surge in popularity

Yes, by today’s cynical standards and general miserable cunts we seem to have become It might seem a bit cliched in places and over schmalzy but It’s simply become a victim of today’s ‘it’s cool to kick it’ attitude to anything that is not either full of swearing, sex or violence (which have their place)

But IMHO it’s still a heartwarming classic and after a very shitty 2020, in Which a lot of crap has come to my way as it has to so many, it’s something that always puts a smile on my face

If you have not seen it all the way through, I urge you give a proper go, leave your cynicism in another room and just be a kid again, and enjoy it for what it is, not because of the mass saturation it’s given.

And remember, ‘every time a bell rings an Angel gets its wings’

HOHOHO and Merry Christmas It in the words of John Maclane in that other Christmas classic, Yippekayyeh, Morherfuckers!

That’s the problem. Seriously give it a go without the cynicism of being a grumpy 40/50 something in 2020… you will blubbing like a baby at the end and hugging all you love

But it’s still really, really, mawkish claptrap shite.

Was made to watch it as a nipper & gave it the benefit of the doubt as an adult. Overrated and over here.

It’s become one of those things mandated as a “classic” by the movie equivalent of football pundits.

But if it floats your boat then who am I to argue?

I agree its been ‘made/mandated’ bollocks, but that does not make it bad… often our reaction to things is clouded when they become ‘mandated’ as a cultural icon… we rebel against it… music is great example… be honest, how smug do feel when you find a new band or artist that is underground and cool… and then get a bit pissed off when they suddenly become the latest thing? We like the kudos of the being ‘in the know’ and hate it when everyone else discovers it…same with this film… its only been in the multi channel years that’s its become more saturated, not the fault of the film. Therefore, the ‘cool’ thing is to dismiss it has ‘mass appeal’ - your ‘review’ is a classic example with ‘over here, mandated, football pundits and the final cliche of ’ But if it floats your boat… etc’ teh classic argument when its not ‘cool enough’ for ya

Friends of ours bought it for us last Christmas when they found out that neither Mrs SOG or I had seen it. We still haven’t watched it but will probably sit down with a bottle of Merlot or 2 and a stack of mince pies today and give it a whirl. Anything to take our minds off the shitty year it has been for everyone.

Bullshine fella

I don’t like it, never liked it and am certainly not trying to get approbation for being “cool” by putting it down. The phrases I used were just to add a little levity in commenting about a film the has its place, but one I personally will make sure I will never ever watch again. You go fill your boots if it floats your boat though.

Well having not watched “The Sound of Music” I’m pleased to see no Sotonian has implored me to watch it.

What a dilemma if you’d all been up in arms at me never having seen it as the worst of the dilemma would be watching it and finding out what a cracking film it really is. :lou_facepalm_2:

TBF I’ve already been subjected to all the shit songs for the last 55 years so there’s little danger I’d like it. :lou_lol:

I’ve never watched it either and I don’t plan to. I have nothing against musicals, Labyrinth is my favourite and obviously the best so why watch any others?

Playing golf is the perfect cure for smugness.
Drive the ball 300 yards down wind, give it large to partner leaving the tee.
Discover ball rolled off into the lake.
Or blast it 290 leave 120 to the pin and take 8.

No smugness around here ever.

The Xmas tree has arrived and is set up ready for decorating by the kids. Thank fuck they’re now tall enough to do the whole tree rather than the first 3 feet only…

We have ours in the Atrium, fortunately the Council Clerk of Works is a friend and has lent Chambers a council “Cherry Picker” and a ramp to get it in through the main entrance.

No Norway Spruce in Trafalgar Square this year. :lou_wink_2:
