Ah yes, those were the days. Matty in the supporters club bar at The Dell on a Saturday evening after the game, sat on his stool in front of the fruit machine, malibu and coke in hand, cod and double chips on the table beside him. Chatting to all and sundry, receiving the “well played today, great goal” plaudits with a modest nod and a smile, “thanks very much”. An undoubted footballing God surrounded by his adoring public he may have been, but clearly he was at his happiest just being one of the lads. That’s what made him so special, and goes a long way to explaining why he is so adored by Saints fans. Sadly those days are gone forever, we won’t be seeing the likes of him in football again. Progress my arse!
