🌍 Is the planet Earth doomed?

They keep saying that if we lead, others will follow. I have to say that I have my doubts about that. China in particular, because they’re so dependent economically on manufacturing, what else are they suddenly going to switch to?

The whole thing is wrong.
Should be Stop Outsourcing & target clothing and electronics goods stores not bloody oil.
Stop buying the stuff China has to close factories
Damage Art annoy motorists it is self defeating

We lead, China laughs as we become more uncompetitive

China doesn’t give a fuck about anyone else - it doesn’t give a fuck about the majority of China

The other bullshit is that the UK (and the other developed nations) may have to pay damages to poorer countries who suffer environmental disasters - Chins is not participated because it considers itself a developing nation (albeit one with a space programme, nuclear arsenal, a fuck off massive navy and army and the biggest trade surplus the world has even seen)

If we did that, how would you expect them to react?

It’s alright lads, the scientists are on it. :+1::+1:

FFS. :unamused::smile:

I know let’s stop the traffic, that’ll sort all the global problems….oh, wait :man_facepalming:

The problem with Just Stop Oil is that when they come out with statements such as “genocidal death project” they lose the argument as they come across as hysterical tarts

"From today, Just Stop Oil will halt its campaign of civil resistance on the M25.

"We are giving time to those in Government who are in touch with reality to consider their responsibilities to this country at this time.

More like “we are running low on impressionable, fragile young people, because they are all on remand and as the leaders of this organization we don’t fancy doing the porridge”

Why did the Just Stop Oil protester cross the road?

Because I was dragging her by her stupid purple hair.

Consequences of Ukraine war
Thread

People here cant afford coal or at least good quality coal, so they are burning what they can.
40% of homes not connected to gas in rural areas.

Fvck Cop 27 reality is different

More the consequences of not investing in rural areas and general energy infrastructure for the last 30 years than anything to do with Ukraine …

TBF.
The unliked right wing gov switched from urban to rural investment 6 years ago.
But our village of 3500 got 60 grants a year meaning 60 homes got 50% off the cost of converting to Gas.
The cost to convert was 5000pln. Minimum wage take home was about 1500 3+ months salary to convert almost 2 months with a grant.
We converted. My last 2 months paid 675pln after tax. Our gas bill is 850 a month.
It isn’t only about investment it’s about how far you are along the development cycle
And at the same time the Gov needed to build new schools, pavements, street lights, public transport, recycling centres.
And the further east you go, the worse those gas take up numbers are
Big part of my Tour story.

Easy to dismiss as crackpots and loons… but same was said about the actions of the Suffragettes.

The focus ambulances (1 incident) seems disproportionate to the level of noise its creates simply because motorists are inconvenienced… the reason why there are actually very few incidents is because emergency services are always routed to avoid traffic delays, whether from protests, or usually because of (With heavy irony that is simply ignored) too much congestion!

Our problem is that as humans/animals our brains are simply not wired to consider time in multi generations in effect we struggle to be concerned about things that are likely to happen beyond our lifespan… addd to that the inconvenient truth that any activity that will help slow up global warming will cost trillions and impact most on large scale polluting industries who fund political leadership in many of the worst polluting countries and its easy to understand why some folks are getting vey angry about this.

Lets not fall into the trap of thinking folks are ‘mentally ill’ because they choose to believe in something and actively do something about it… Remember, many suffragettes were imprisoned and sent to mental institutions, force fed when on hunger strike… I can’t criticise those who have more conviction in their beliefs than I do.

If converting from coal to gas is seen as part of the solution, then we may as well give up right now. Given that the whole phenomenon of climate change has come about because of our reliance on burning fossil fuels for power, how can changing from one fossil fuel to another help? It’s like telling a heavy smoker with bunged-up lungs to change to a lower tar cigarette, when the only sensible advice would be to quit altogether.

Governments (and not just in Poland) should have been ploughing money into renewable and other non-carbon forms of energy. Far too little of that has happened, and we’re now racing towards a precipice, foot hard down on the accelerator.

As I replied to Cobs earlier - I was actually being genuine (for once). I wasnt writing her off as a nutter - more that she doesn’t seem in a good place mentally.

My concern is organisations like Just stop oil are taking advantage of vulnerable young adults like her and getting her pull these stunts, get arrested and go to prison whilst the organisers sit on the sidelines (I appreciate Hallam is currently inside - but there are many more who aren’t)

It’s similar to impressionable young muslims and radical imans but without the exploding gillets

Equally it is a real problem.
The UK & others have wealth beyond the dreams of 80% of the planet.
Poland 15 years ago was just starting to use EU funds to build functional roads & railways that you could use.
We all saw stories of big oil blocking so much R&D lower cost solutions.
And for Poland, Ukraine, Belarus wind farms are less viable as we have far less reliable wind c/w UK And far less sunshine for solar.
UK jumped from coal to Gas in the late 70s early 80s these places were still in the dark ages back then.
We do have solar farms but again they are very small. That’s because Polish farms & fields are very small across most of the country. We have a limited coastline.
It takes time. It takes investment and it takes income to afford the cost.
With minimum wage IF you have a non gig contract of ÂŁ600 a month it cannot happen at speed no matter what activists say.
Or the wealthy nations and the polluters like China & India could pay for it. But they wont.
The Planet doesn’t have time.
But the people need time
