They were protesting at an opera house that has just installed a 67m wind turbine

ā€˜Tards

Maybe people should start protesting at forest greens ground seeing as the owner bankrolls these bastards

Would you have said they same about the suffragettes at the races? You might get upset with them ā€˜inconveniencing the public’ but that is the whole point of protest, to inconvenience and thus get voice heard. I suspect most would have more empathy with the methods if they agreed with with the cause of protest…

Seems to me that the country as a whole has become less tolerant of alternative POV … and the right wing politicians obviously don’t get the irony - shouted loudest that Brexit was all about democracy, yet forget that the right to protest is a democratic right, not the right to protest as long as I am not inconvenienced in any way by it…

They have a right to protest but what they are protesting about is bollocks.

.

You can guarantee that what ever method they used to get to Lords was with the help of oil.
If they walked the shoes would have some sort of plastic involved.

Perhaps true, because all that plastic has become overwhelmed our society… there is currently little alternative… and just look at the amount of plastic shit in the oceans and land fill. You work in the industry so are maybe ā€˜invested’ in your opinion?

Fossil fuels will run out… question is do we want to wait that long before really embracing alternative technologies whilst they continue to fuck up the planet? These folks dont, and not sure there is a rationale argument to suggest they are wrong in that opinion

The company I work for is divirging into wind technology but even that requires oil to make the composite blades and the cables to transfer the electricity we will probably never get away from using some sort of oil for the process of making things.

So just because I dont buy into the Just stop Oil message, I have to be more tolerant to those people being less tolerant about my POV?

Er, know, you should respect their right to protest in irrespective of whether you agree with their POV or their choice of protest. If oil was ā€˜stopped’ and you wanted to protest to reinstate its use, I would expect them to respect your right to protest/campaign to do so… its not that difficult.

People are fucked off with them because they took direct action on roads - although protesting there makes sense… but our nice ā€˜democratic’ government have in effect made that illegal, so hey have started targeting events with high levels of coverage…

They are zealots - no fucking way they would respect my rights. They are entirely unrealistic in their demands as it stands

I think you need to check the definition of zealot. If anything the suffragettes were closer to the definition by self sacrifice and self harm they were prepared to engage in. So far all Stop Oil have done is cause a few roads to be shut for a while (Other routes are available) and disrupt a few events for a few minutes… As for unrealistic expectations, whether we decide to stop using fossil fuel derived products before they run out or not is a choice we do realistically have, should there be the political will or consumers demand it.

There will come a time in the near future when the oil companies will be viewed with same distaste as we now see big Tobacco companies, if they continue to drive towards more exploration and use… Shell "investing in renewables’’ who then charge profiteering levels to use their electric vehicle chargers…

Even more balanced scientific view is that we are potentially now fucked - and a bit in ā€˜gods’ as to which predictive model wins out, all of which spell some kind of doom… the worst with major grain belts disappearing in North America and eastern EU and China, could see levels of food shortages that would cause serious political unrest and mass migrations… we should be fine though as if we can just send em all to Rwanda…

Good start by England at 41-0

Not sure this helps either

The hang ā€˜em and flog ā€˜em brigade lap up this sort of stuff.

So, say their right to protest involves preventing you from getting to work, or to a hospital appointment. That’s not hypothetical conjecture, this is happening daily. At what point does your right to go to work or hospital override their right to protest?

And what if I decided to protest against something else, say nuclear arms or something. And I decided to block a road that they were slow-walking along, preventing their protest from continuing. Whose protest supercedes the others ā€œdemocratic rightā€ to peaceful protest?

First up, there were no incidence of of Ambulence sor fire services being help up… it was another media bollox piece by insinuating that it would

Second if its an appointment that is urgent, then yes its not great but the point is we can travel to most places by other means than car and should consider this before the default of jumping into the M25 car park

Lets be honest, they protested on roads usually chock a block with slow moving congested traffic - I would certainly not plan to us such travel routes had i waited for an important medical appointment…

Its not really a fair critique, same with the work one - protest has biggest impact when it inconveniences. Its only because we have right wing government supported by a right wing dominated media that its played and portrayed so negatively, that they are portrayed as nutters or radicals etc, as opposed to folks who genuinely passionate about the environmental impact of the continued use of fossil fuels… sadly most folks still seam to think its either bullshit or happy to let future generations deal with the shit
