One of my sixth formers asked me about the attack yesterday. I thought he was referring to the football. Stunned silence when I responded, ‘Pretty good all things considered’’

No one I know has been spouting any bigotry on Facebook so I was smugly thinking I wouldn’t be exposed to that sort of nonsense. However, they have linked the odd news article and that’s when I took a look at the comments section.

Jenkins makes a really valid point there.
My own experience is that back in 1990ish there was a Hampshire railway station near me that had an IRA bomb warning EVERY Friday, for ages.
It was never made public, there was no disruption, no publicity, it was just monitored every week to ensure that it was a hoax.
Terrorists want publicity, they need it to spread fear.
This wall-to-wall coverage gives them that and portrays an attack by a small time criminal as an international threat.
But asking for a responsible media is a whole new debate.

The IRA and later PIRA are vastly different beasts and only the ignorant would compare, for one the IRA were politically motivated and anyone with any sense can tell this isn’t politcally motivated but religiously so.
Don’t be absurd. A pigeon wouldn’t have the strength to carry a takeaway. It would have been delivered by a raven from the Tower; they are kept in peak condition especially for emergencies such as this.

At the risk of sounding naive… what difference does that make?
Surely the desire for infamy/martyrdom is the same, no?
Its apples and oranges, there was dialogue with the IRA all the way through, there is no dialogue here as there is no end to this, I hope its a fad but what would you say would stop this? The 1997 peace accord went some way to do so, what and to whom would we concede to stop this happening?
Ignoring it is childish, niave and selfish, this is happening and its happening here, why is it happening and repressing facts as they happen doesn’t help.
I’m sure the ideology of the IRA wasn’t infamy but the unification of Ireland, some IRA members were Catholic or practising and I won’t patronise you to tell you suicide is a sin to a Catholic hence that tactic (suicide bombing) was never used as the widepsread community whom they claimed to represent would be abhored at it.
I think that’s a very good question. There’s no central body to negotiate with.

Martyrdom holds a similar value in either faith though. You mention the unification of Ireland; perhaps we don’t know what communities or national borders are being trodden on here, so we presume they’re just religious, as if that was somehow a less meaningful unifier?
Martyrdom is huge in Catholicism, sacrifice also, suicide isn’t.

So there we have it. It is better to be blown up by the IRA than an Islamic terrorist. Good to know that there are different kinds of terrorists campaigns. Those which get Barry’s approval rating and those that dont.

I have had people share things from organisations like Britain First and March For Britain (not heard of them before, dont know if they are new). Someone posted a vid of a bloke called Lee ranting about how Muslims were the scum of the earth, the centre of all evil etc. Not very pleasant. The follow up comments made interesting reading. Plenty of people calling him out but an awful lot of support for him too.
