And here’s a funny story about Wells cathedral: we were singing the Verdi Requiem in Wells Cathedral some years back, and really thought we had a bargain with a hotel booked within walking distance of the cathedral. Other member of the choir were staying outside of town, and had to drive in.
The concert went well, we went out to dinner at the hotel, I drank quite a bit (no driving, you see!).
God payed his little joke on me the next morning, when the bloody bells started at 7.00, and went on for hours; with a raging hangover, this did not go down well with me.
The lesson learnt? Don’t ever stay at that hotel ever again!
But Wells was a lovely place.

We took the kids there when they were little (on expenses as I had a client meeting nearby) - after the cathedral we took them to Wookie Hole caves. They enjoyed that more strangely…

I’ve rung the bells there. Wonder if I was responsible?

I’d like to think you shoved a cushion up the back of your jumper and dragged one leg along the ground, while cursing the bells in a French accent.

I only did that on special occasions and for significant remuneration. My visit, I think, was a much more mundane Southampton University Guild of Change Ringers visit in the late 60s. Random unwanted fact: Wellls Cathedral is the heaviest ring of 10 bells in the world and the tenor, 56 cwt (2.8 tonnes), is the heaviest bell I’ve rung.
