Fonte. Will he stay or will he go?

Footballers are reminding me about that infamous quote on fidelity.

“Men are only as faithful as their options”.

It’s the fucking same with the lot of them. Southampton is a wonderful club while they’re getting first team football, Premier League experience, international recognition. As soon as Big Club United aim the readies at them, they’re out of here like a rat out of an aqueduct.

I know that people will say that he didn’t spend years at the top, and therefore is going to be very interested in a move, and I might have had more sympathy for him for that reason. Nice big earner, or perhaps a chance to play in a genuinely big team. After the years of service, you;d be inclined to give him that.

We probably should not be surprised. Remember that he dropped a division to play for us, I know there are those that like to float crazy theories, such as “he really loved League One, pap!” or “he was impressed with Cortese’s spoon collection!”, and I wouldn’t spend a lot of time shouting you down.

He probably dropped a division for money though, which is probably the reason he was miffed when Everton came calling and we wouldn’t let him go. Can see it from his point of view, but doesn’t make anything we’re doing any easier.

Everyone’s got a price and/or a “tipping point”, and to be honest I’d rather they left us at their peak, rather than watching them decline with us and eventually become a liability. It excites me when we have players such as Lambert, Mane or Double VD join us and become bigger stars, even though I accept they will move on at some point. I think in this day and age even LeTis would have gone to a bigger club with the money being thrown around.

If Fonte went to a “big” club (has to be a club in this year’sChampions League at least) for a “big” fee (considering Williams went to Everton for 12 million, then it has to be 15 million or more), then I would consider he’s done a great job and been a decent servant to the Club and would wish him well.

At the moment I refuse to read all the paper gossip/talk as they obviously need sensationalism to sell their rags, so I’m holding judgement until either her goes or the transfer window closes.

Come on Jose, don’t just do it for the money!

Im past caring about players coming or going

We were screwed when we lost Shaw, Lambert, Lallana and Lovren, but we kicked on

We were screwed when we lost schneiderlin, Alberweireld and Clyne but we kicked on

Now we will be screwed cos we lost Wanyama, Mane and possibly Fonte

We might not kick on, we may even go back a bit, but we will still be there or there abouts. I will still be at SMS calling the ref a dumb bastard, and cheering on which ever transient mercenary that happens to pull on the stripes

Now if we signed a transgender mercenary, that would be news.

Ballotelli?

Frankly I don’t think Fonte is actually that great, and is probably on his way down, but he is very important for the team.

However, if he wants to go he can fuck off. Spend £20m on a younger, potentially better player.

If we can find a descent centre back to pair up with VVD then I say we offload him.

Again I do not think you can underestimate the influence he has throughout the camp.

Also the combination of VVD and Fonte in front of Fraser cannot be underestimated either in our success of the last 2 seasons. When they are all playing defensively we are brilliant!

I’d be more worried about losing VVD - he would walk into any top team and must be worth three times the value of John Stones.

At least it will cost someone a fortune to take him now.

I did not mean to down vote that, but chubby fingers did mean I press down instead of up!!!

I agree but I’m starting to wonder whether there are buyout clauses in any of the new deals.

Just seen this snippet from Jack Schitt on twitter

Make of it what you will and I hope Jack doesn’t mind me posting it here, if he hasn’t already!!

To be fair, the same could apply to all the wantaways who went away…

I blame their agents fluffing egos / players from the “big” clubs tapping up players while on Engerland duty.

Yoshida is better than Fonte anyway.

Yoshida’s a strange one, I really like the guy and 95% of the time he plays good football. Just there’s always a point in every game when he completely switches off and puts us in big trouble with a howler of a back pass or such like. He got away with it on saturday thanks to Frasers quick reaction but more often than not it costs us badly. Also noticed he ducked out of the way of Watfords goalscoring shot to avoid getting a ball in the face … an instinctive reaction no doubt but you’d expect your centre half to be a bit braver.

For these reasons I would disagree … Fonte’s far more dependable

So the unofficial press release from the club is “this guy, our captain, who is very important to us is a bit unsettled and would probably be unseated by a bid from another club”

Hmmm…

Jesus, popped back to Saintsweb for a little gander. That place has more maniacs than usual on it. Even the half decent posters have been dragged down.
