As I understand it Moeen was telephoned by Ben Stokes pretty much as soon as the news of Jack Leach’s injury broke. Both him and McCullum clearly have him as their first choice to step into the breech, McCullum tried without success to persuade him to rescind his decision to retire from red ball cricket before the Pakistan series. They both clearly know his worth, and I for one agree with them, for me it’s a no brainer, and I hope he decides to step up, he surely must be tempted by the chance of one last hurrah. He would clearly slot in nicely to the so called Bazball philosophy, not just taking the roll of spinner but his batting is tailor made for it. He’s a class act with the stats to prove it, Derek Underwood and Graham Swann are the only English spinners to take more wickets, and his batting is a bonus. I don’t know if he’s into personal milestones but he surely must be tempted by the fact that he’s only 86 runs and 5 wickets away from becoming just the 15th Test cricketer to an all-rounders double of 3,000 runs and 200 wickets. I for one would love to see him reach that milestone.
