A fair bit of hypocrisy and double standards floating about today regarding this incident. Bairstow tried to do exactly the same thing on day 3 to Labuschagne but of course his throw missed the stumps by about a metre. Yesterday Carey collected the ball and threw it in one movement, after watching Bairstow gormlessly wandering out of his crease several times before. The over was definitely still live when Carey released the ball, if he had been standing up and whipped the bails off it would have been hailed as a smart piece of keeping. And of course McCullum, for all his sanctimonious humbug today, did it twice in his career, most famously when he ran out Muralitharan for stepping out of his crease to congratulate Kumar Sangakkara on reaching his century. And the world certainly needs no lectures from Stuart Broad of all people regarding upholding the spirit of the game. His time would probably be better spent learning that appealing to the umpire for an LBW decision isn’t beneath him.

Bairstow drops two chances.
He’s pretty much cost us the Ashes

Didn’t drop Smith the second time

I should hope not, it was a regulation catch, he didn’t have to move and it would have been taken by most club cricketers. Of the two he spilled, the first one was difficult but he got his glove to it so it was a chance. The Travis Head drop would be classed as a sitter at this level, but Bairstow drops these regularly. Let’s face it he’s nowhere near the standard required for a keeper at this level, at what point does loyalty to a friend and teammate, although an admirable quality, become a pig headed refusal to face the obvious? With Olly Pope’s injury this Test would have been an ideal opportunity to Stokes and McCullum to swallow their pride and bring back Foakes, playing Bairstow solely as a batsman, maybe promoting him up the order a bit. Let’s hope Travis Head doesn’t go on to make a big score, Bairstow will certainly be praying he doesn’t, but if he does then Phil’s observation could well be on the money.

We’re getting hammered now. Bazballed, even

Marsh century. Root dropped him, a sitter, on 12

If Woods is moving the ball our batsmen are going to have no chance against the Aussie bowlers.

4 wickets for 9 runs.:grinning:
