EFL Cup Final - Manchester United vs Southampton Match Thread

We were class through and through. Fans were immense, sounded like a home game on TV. Only time I heard a noise from Man U was in the 92 minute.

Have to admit to having deja vu after their second went in, felt like the Saints of old and at that point was only hoping it wasn’t going to be a humiliation of a scoreline. Especially with out get our ’ disallowed goal excuse’ already lined up

Thankfully the fans at Wembly and the players aren’t as defeatest and miserable as I am, and the professionalism and the way we responded was awe inspiring. We were playing attractive exciting football and for all their millions they were the ones feining and trying to get bookings/red cards. No wonder the pitch was slippy at the end there was so much fucking hair product on it.

Shame about Forster, thought he would be our steadying force as he has been in the past but felt nervous everytime they picked up the ball in our half. Cedric made some beautiful runs and dinked in some fantastic crosses. JWP played out of his skin I thought as well but hard to pick out individual performances aside from Gabbi who was a class apart.

Most importantly, we looked like we belonged. At cardiff we were bunny in headlights scared, today we were denied by crap officials.

Yesterday I was more gutted than a grown man should be over a game of football, today I’m just immensley proud

Don’t criticise our fans or players…they were UP FOR IT yesterday and it showed. Everybody on the lower levels seemed to be standing…no pressure it was a natural thing…we were so pumped up it seemed wrong to sit. We stood all through the game…we/I was singing shouting even when we were 2 - 0 down because we knew we were still in it.

I was proud of our club…players and supporters…if you want to dissect why we didn’t win…YOU CAN JUST FUCK OFF.

If the result had been the other way around, then the media after the game would have been full of wanky pundits banging on about how video technology is well overdue and how Utd were robbed. Instead all we get is a perpetual wank fest about how greta Utd are and a cursory mention about “plucky” Saints.

That fucking lino is called Stuart Burt and if the cunt ever gets to run the line at SMS, he’s going to get dogs abuse from me.

This season we ahve been to Wembley and to the San Siro (who would have predicted that a few years back)

Both times we played brilliantly

Both times I feel like I had my pocket picked

Still gutted. Proud but gutted.

Sorry for deleting my post, @burp - I couldn’t remember if I’d posted something similar before and I had, it was just nestled at the bottom of the Drinks thread.

So for you then, the main bit of my post that was new concerned Fraser. I’m concerned about Fraser. Not been the same player as he was last year, and I’m not sure why that is. I was always warned that he was never going to be covering the corners adequately, but he’s looked rooted to the spot on a couple of recent free kicks, yesterday’s and the West Ham one. The latter was so unbelievable that my mind did a number on me to protect Fraser at the time. I thought it had been deflected.

But nah, I think we’ve got a problem between the sticks. Not sure whether it’s technical, motivational or whatever, but it’s not as reliable as we once remembered, and I’m starting to get the Kelv fear when he plays, particularly on those free kicks.

Don’t disagree with any of that and the last paragraph is spot on. Even my daughter was asking me why he’s playing, or in her words “why’s he there, does he ever actually make a save, he’s so slow”. Shocking positioning and movement for the free kick.

Fuck it, got 2 quotes to write up and then i’m going to sit down and see what it looked like on TV. I may have to look away for their first.

Fraser has not been the same since the lengthy lay off… and yesterday he looked as if he was carrying a problem…I suspect he is just as nimble as he was for some reason…?

Ralph has just been on talksport. He spoke well. Was asked if Virgil would be staying and he made the right noises

Unashamedley nicked from Saintslist (thanks Pete if you’re on here too)

The organisers of the EFL Cup Final have unreservedly apologised for the chaos at their awards ceremony, with the trophy being presented to the wrong team. They said an administrative error had led to the wrong result being announced and that the real winners were, after all, Southampton FC.

Unusually, the director of the team wrongly awarded the trophy, Jose Mourinho, admitted that there had been an error and that the better production on the day should have received the award.

The organisers have been asked to ensure that such fundamental errors, such as disallowing a perfectly good goal, should not be allowed to blight and embarrass future occasions.

@saint-or-sinner do you really have to have a twitter account to view these videos? Isn’t there a guest mode or something?

Just watched the whole game again.

First goal - stupid fucking challenge that lead to the free kick, then stupid place to put a short guy in the wall. Forster could probably got a hand to it, but struck with pace.

2nd goal that short person in the wall was caught napping on the throw.

Forster then made a couple of good saves. Am I the only one that thinks Forster was carrying a leg injury of some kind? He seemed to be in trouble all the way through.

I am not going to slag any of our players over that 90 minutes. I was so proud of them and just being there and even more so from the 48th minute to the 87th minutes, where our support was amazing. I think if we had got the 3rd in the 87th minute I would have died celebrating!

Redmond was pretty class, especially in the first half, but seriously the whole team were amazing. Oh yeah when did Yoshida become a huge header threat at corners… when did that happen.

I want more finals, fuck this putting out a reserve team, that was what football is all about, FINALS!

So so proud to be a Saint!

Yeah. Its horrible to point the finger at one player, particularly a goalkeeper, but much as I hate to say it, he simply is a glaring weakness.

His problem seems to be that he’s incapable of actually pushing off with his legs and thrusting himself towards the ball in his dive. That’s why a lot the goals he concedes (Ibra’s, Lingards, Obiang’s the other week) look good at first as if they were ‘out of reach’ of the goalkeeper, but on second viewing, aren’t in the corner and certainly aren’t in the ‘unsaveable’ category.

Forster seems incapable of actually leaping across the goal when he dives, he just sort of turns himself sideways and flops down.

For a guy who’s 6’7’’, he doesn’t exactly make the goal look small.

When you combine that with the fact that he’s glued to his line, can’t distribute the ball and can’t command his defence, he’s just an all-around not-very-talented keeper sadly.

Boruc was way better.

If we have had VVD in the team we would have won no problem.

Jamie Vardy aka Rat Face with his disgraceful tackle robbed us of our best player and ultimately cost us the match.

If Leicester are relegated justice will be done.

He defiantly has some kind of leg or ankle problem that is meaning he is at only 90%. I think this showed more yesterday. I think the club took the decision to play him as it was the final. He is not fully fit in my opinion. Reminded me of when Steve Williams played in the semi final against Everton in 84.

I also think that now is not the time to pick out any players. Let’s get this season done and dusted and then see what the summer brings.

Proud of the whole squad/club.
