RIP Franz Beckenbauer.

A class player. Made the game look easy.

The only rugby player whose name I knew as a little nipper - only because my best mate’s dad was Welsh

I was more a son of the football field even back then.

Lovely man. I sat next to him at a London Welsh game in the 80’s, shortly after he had retired. Had a great chat about The Lions and the lack of rugby in Hampshire.

For me a truly great broadcaster with a great taste in music. When we first moved to the wilds of West Wales in the mid 1980s there was no TV signal for the first two years. The highlight of my week was Annie’s Sunday evening request show on the wireless, an absolute must, never missed it. Alexis Korner followed by Annie for two hours, it kept me sane. Although to be honest, two years without a telly was no great hardship in retrospect, the kids, who had just reached their teens were a bit miffed to start with, but quickly got into their music. Now as adults my son has ditched the TV and daughter watches very little. Both still into their music though.
RIP Annie, and thanks for the memories.

John Pilger died on December 30th. One of the last of a dying breed?

Pretty much what @Nottarf-Krap said, the day it happened.

No longer the leader of the pack.

My favourite…had the single back in the day…RIP Mary…

The only single I had on the Red Bird label.

Boney M has floated off down the rivers of Babylon.

Melanie, the folk singer who smashed Woodstock has passed away aged 76. Probably best remembered for her hit ‘Brand New Key’, (covered many years later over here by The Wurzels!) and a superb version of the Rolling Stones ‘Ruby Tuesday’. I was a big fan back in the day. RIP.

That Guardian piece was heartwarming, especially about the role keeping his family in comfort for the following 40+ years.
