FWIW, I had no real issue with your post and neither did the site from what I can make out. Something of a cold shower moment, yes. Completely disrespectful viewed from some eyes? Yes.
But I’m left with the nagging question of “Did Captain Tom do any good?” Really?
The obvious answer is all the money he raised, but as you pointed out, the government’s ability to raise that amount is much handier. The money he raised will probably be going into the pocket of Tory mates as well.
The money raised for the NHS was inconsequential but the effect on an electorate is the overwhelming support of the rank and file of the NHS, that a right wing Tory Government has shown intent to sell off piecemeal is now “ring-fenced” by popular support…hopefully.
I am more pissed off that @Donkey_Schlong felt he had to take it down. I don’t share his view that the site may have grasses posting here. You’d never know it from the reporting function, designed precisely to flag posts.
But this is a public site, you don’t know who’s looking and even though he’s signed up with fairly anonymous details, I can understand him not wanting the hassle for himself or the site.
I think perhaps what’s scarier is what is not said at all for the same reasons. I find myself self-censoring all the time.
Yep I think we pretty much all do that in these “Woke” days. I didn’t entirely disagree with @Donkey_Schlong but I thought it a bit crass for my taste but his right to voice his opinion. When you see a Tory Government adopting a Socialist attitude you have to look at what prompted this seismic shift. I’m not saying it’s all because of Captain Tom but he focussed a lot of attention on the consequences of underfunding over the last 10 years.
Although the money raised by Con Tom was amazing (I think he is in the Guinness Book of Records for the most money raised by an individual for charity) I think it was his attitude and character that really got to people. Certainly the people I know. He gave everyone a lift with his positive attitude which was priceless at a time when we had little or no galvanising leadership from the Government. He just embodied that amazing spirit of the generation who lived (and some who fought) during the Second World War - when even civilians weren’t sure if they would survive the next day. His life after the war also reflected an attitude that you no longer see. Staying in a marriage that was clearly doomed for 20 years and was never consummated, who would do that now? His wave (with the clenched first) when the Hurricane and Spitfire flew over to honour his 100th birthday brought a lump to my throat as you could tell it took him back to his time in the forces. Those of us with parents and grandparents who lived through those years will always remember Tom as he displayed the same characteristics and attitude as seen in our own families. God bless the old boy. RIP
I think it has less to do with Captain Tom and more to do with the revolution that would have followed had people been told to stay home without compensation.
Same old story. These things are never given away easily. It’s only when not giving creates greater issues for the establishment that you see anything like this.
That’s the bit I don’t understand, tbh. It’s not as if he was getting slaughtered for it, and the post was up for long enough. What did he think was suddenly going to happen? A group of Tom’s nonagenarian mates turning up at his gaff waving pitchforks?
Well some matey did get nicked for an offensive tweet.
Mind you, it was in Scotland and they tend to be quite idiotic with what they’ll nick you for. The new hate crimes legislation they were planning on passing has already been gutted in review apparently.
Corbyn may have been airbrushed out of Labour by the faceless spivs running it, but the tories don’t forget an electoral fright in a hurry. They tried their damnedest to bury the UKIP vote as well, back when it was deemed a threat.
I don’t think any fair minded person would begrudge Captain Tom the tributes paid to him, he deserved them for his achievements in life. But I know I’m not the only one who was nauseated at the way his death was singled out and exploited by the government and the whole of the media. Johnson immediately orders the flags at Downing St to be lowered to half mast, tells councils across the country to follow suit. Calls for Spitfire flypasts, The Sun even talking about a State Funeral. Just a couple of weeks before he died the death toll for Covid passed 100,000, a shocking number. No doubt many of them would have done good things for the country, raised money for charities, fought in wars. Why were the flags not already flying at half mast? Just one day marking the milestone in the media, then forgotten. The Prime Minister bowing his head and saying he takes full responsibility for every death, then never mentioned again. This ‘taking full responsibility’, how does it manifest itself? The truth is that there was no political mileage in the 100,000 deaths, they are an embarrassment, a topic to be avoided if possible. One death was seen as an opportunity to divert and gaslight the nation, and they filled their boots.
What an insult to the 100,000 plus bereaved families, watching as the country is told to lower all flags on public buildings and get out on their doorsteps and clap for one death. It’s just not right, every death from this virus is a tragedy for someone, and to openly project the idea that somehow one death is more important than the rest is just plain wrong. The 100,000 bereaved families deserved the gesture of flying flags at half mast, an acknowledgement of their loss, as did Captain Tom.
It’s just such a shame that Ground Control was Boris Johnson. That’s the real fucking tragedy here.
I was reading in an obituary that after one of his divorces, (he was married five times apparently), he moved into the Playboy mansion until he sorted himself out with a new house. He stayed for two years! Obviously he had better things to do than trawl round estate agents. Quite right too!
Actually he probably didn’t - after his assassination attempt, he had issues in the downstairs department. He apparently had a penile impact to enable him to have sex again. Not sure if this means he had a permanent boner or it was inflatable on demand
