Isn’t it funny that despite both of your apparent inferences that such distractions are beneath you, you both failed to mention one of the most powerful tools of distraction currently employed in the UK, primarily used against the male section of the masses. A distraction that the vast majority on here, yourselves included have unquestionably succumbed to. Namely the circus that is the free porn sites.

Corrected for you…
True. If I didn’t waste so much time on porn and football I’d probably be leader of the free world by now
Failed to mention football this time, but talked about loads before. I think you need to have some entertainment. While aspects of football are vulgar, I think it does more good than harm. While fans around the world support different teams, football brings more people together than religion.
Sotonians itself is famous for not being overburdened with football content. Number one topic of conversation here is politics and current events. Culturally, we’re not as collectively obsessed with Saints or the beautiful game as people elsewhere. If Alexei Sayle was right, and football is the new opiate of the masses, there are at least people capable of taking it in moderation.
If we’re talking about your common or garden football forum, then I’d be much more inclined to agree. Half the shit on TSW is just speculation, people spend ages discussing stuff that may never happen. I suspect supporting Saints may even form significant parts of personality, or at least drive behaviours. There, yours and Sayle’s complaints ring a lot truer.

Not sure about that. In my experience most people are absolutely fucking idiots when it comes to understanding football so I don’t bother discussing it with them - with the exception of one or two kneejerk tools on here most people seem to have a sense of perspective. I’m still mildly obsessed by it.
Women, football and music - all obsessions that never seem to wane in my experience.
I’m not sure opiate is the correct term to use. That to me implies it is merely used to sedate the populace in order to keep things from getting out of control. whereas I think the control exerted through this tool is more complex than that.
Sometimes it is used for the exact opposite. It is used to deliberately incite the population, as we have seen recently with the poppy furore and the intervention of the prime minister. As we see whenever England play. It is used to drum up nationalistic feelings which might well be otherwise absent.
It is frequently used to reinforce societal expectations towards authority. Criticism of players who fail to sing the National anthem. Disproportionate Punishment at the behest of sponsors, of players that break trivial rules, e.g. shirts off at goal celebrations. Demonization of pundits that express sympathy for immigrants. Demonization of a player that wants to move on, I.e. renegotiate a contractual bond to the clubs ownership.
It is used to set the standard of what is considered normal. It is considered normal for certain members of society to be fantastically wealthy for no legitimate reason and worshipped by those who are far less fortunate. It is considered normal for people to behave as consumers. To buy the shirt, the ticket, the pie, the pint and the sky subscription and to neglect the opportunities that they have to create something themselves.
It is used as an incentive. To give people false hope.
British culture and the media is saturated in Football to a totally disproportionate extent and that is no accident. It is not because football is the height of human cultural achievement or the most thrilling entertainment there is. It has been cultivated in that way by the media and business interests and politicians for the purpose of control.
Football is a gateway drug to other forms of media Baron control which gets us when we are ypung. For me it’s the reason I started reading the newspapers and watching the news. It’s certainly not the only one but it is a pretty powerful one and extremely pervasive.
I do not remember Theresa May intervening when Brazzers recently refused to sanction Sophie Dee shitting a jizz soaked poppy into the gaping mouth of Courtney cumz as an act of remembrance. That is the difference between porn and football. Although perhaps it won’t always be like that.

That’s because, apart from the non-money shot clips you get on pornhub, you have to pay for Brazzers!!
