DO you know anything about this mystery Saints shirt?
Saints fan Paul Lee-Spridgeon has contacted the Daily Echo in the hope of discovering this shirt’s origins.
He has speculated that it was made in the late 1970s to early 1980s, but is “certainly not a first team kit”.
He adds that he’s “stumped” as to its background and has asked for his fellow supporters’ help in working out the story behind the shirt.
“It’s cotton, made by ‘Patrick’ & both badges are emboidered,” said Lee-Spridgeon. "I’m guessing it’s from 81-87 but I know it was never a first team kit.
"My best guess is a ‘Patrick’ sample that was rejected. I’m pretty sure there was no leisure wear around that time unlike today. "
Can you help?

Thanks, Chutters.
Just another 340 odd members to go and we’ll know the answer to my question.

Turkish market?
This was the 1972 training top that was issued to the youth team. HTH
Judging by the collar it’s from much the same time as the ‘candy-stripe’ kit; this was worn from the 1976/77 season until the 1980/81 season, which saw the ‘Keegan’ kit. I recall us having a third kit for certain games (away to West Brom we used to wear all red if memory serves), but this can’t be one of those as if you could wear that shirt then the standard home shirt would also have been fine.
Also, the ‘Keegan’ kit was the first one we had made by Patrick (I think). So I’d go with the prototype theory - one of a selection of designs to replace the candy stripes in 1980, ultimately rejected. And rightly rejected if this is indeed the case, as the kit we got in 1980 still stands as the best that we’ve had, at least in my humble opinion.
Looks like sort of knock-off top a parent would buy for their kid from a bloke in the pub - " cos it has a Saints badge on it so it must be the real thing…"
Not that I was scarred for life, no Sir!
There are many sample shirts made that never see the light of day or go into full production - even in the last decade.
These saints are all wearing different kits, from different centuries by the looks of things, can you help me identify them? Some appear quite old to have been still playing for the first team mind, but many seem to have those cunting hipster beards that seem so passe now
Three at the front look like triplets - maybe the Wallace bros were not the first 3 bros to play for saints?

UPDATED: Can anyone solve the mystery of this Saints shirt?
Show/hide article…
A SAINTS fan has discovered the story behind this mystery shirt - thanks to his fellow supporters.
Saints fan Lee-Spridgeon had contacted the Daily Echo in the hope of discovering this shirt’s origins.
He was speculating that it was made in the late 1970s to early 1980s, but that it was “certainly not a first team kit”.
He added that he was “stumped” as to its background and asked his fellow supporters for help in working out the story behind the shirt.

“My best guess is a ‘Patrick’ sample that was rejected. I’m pretty sure there was no leisure wear around that time unlike today.”
But with the help of his fellow supporters and the Daily Echo, he has seemingly got to the bottom of the mystery.
He said: "I’ve had several replies over the mystery Saints shirt and popular consensus suggests that it’s a fake that somebody has ‘made’ from old stock ‘Patrick’ sportswear.
"One chap suggest that the seller does this type of thing on a regular basis.
"I’ve no reason to disbelieve him and I’m glad he cleared up the mystery."

Glad that’s sorted… was worried we might never get to the bottom of this…fuck me it was a thrilling saga…
He could have just asked the marketing dept at Southampton FC to confirm if it was a genuine product and when it was released.
