I’m fine with people downvoting my shit in lieu of arguing a point. I’m a caustic bastard at times, and can see why I attract them.
It’s disappointing to see someone put so much effort into articulating a case, on an inaugural post, to have people downvoting it because they can’t argue with it.
Watched a movie about Brexit yesterday. It was mostly allegorical. It was set in New York, and what happened, is a load of immigrants started arriving.
People were very angry at the immigrants, though it wasn’t immediately clear why. It didn’t seem like they were doing any harm. They were going to libraries, hanging out in hotels; just living their lives. People seemed scared of the immigrants though. I guess just cos they looked different.
Then the Brexiteers come on, to capitalise on this fear. Their were three main ones, Boris Johnson was played by Bill Murray, you could tell he wasn’t really serious, he was just along for the ride. Michael Gove was portrayed as a dangerous zealot, he was payed by Harold Ramis (RIP?) and there was also a laughable, buffoon like Nigel Farage figure, played by Dan Ackroyd.
What the Brexiteers did, was start rounding up the harmless Immigrants and locking them up in a kind of prison. It went ok for a while, the Citizens were loving it. But then, the Looney Left got involved, and made them release all the immigrants. The immigrants naturally run amock for a bit, and then they set up a kind of temple in an apartment building. The Brexiteers didn’t like that, so they invaded the temple and started shooting it up, and in the end they blew the temple up and blamed it on immigrant terrorists.
Gd film tho. It was made in 80s, so ahead of it’s time.

Thanks Bearsy, but this is 2016 and things are a mess, so who we going to call?
the ramifications of brexit are like the Ireland vs France works cup game. When France went through by cheating (Henrys handball) the Irish moaned like mad saying it was unfair. They’re still bitter about it now. But the authorities said the result stood and the French told everyone to get over it. But you can bet that if it had been an Irish player that cheated, they wouldn’t be saying we should play the game again and they’d be telling the French to man up and get on with it.

Not really the point though, is it? As Bletch says his post is well articulated and I have genuine respect for anyone who has clearly laid out reasons for voting the way they did (even if I don’t agree with them) - the preceding few pages have been a cantankerous discussion around the effect of the lies propagated by the Leave campaign - his post didn’t attempt to address those therefore I personally didn’t bother engaging with it.
Haven’t really seen much evidence of genuine respect post-poll.
I think people haven’t bothered engaging with reality.
What happens now is that people are supposed to own and direct the political settlement. I’m certainly aiming to be a part of that, just as I would have been had we remained.
They’re are not seeking to overturn it, but to ensure A50 is not invoked without the agreement of Parliament, which is a different thing. To seek legal recourse to overturn a majority vote would fail before it even got the steps of the OB (or wherever it would be decided).
However, I agree with you on the prinicple of the thing. It does smack of deperation and If there are moves afoot to disrupt brexit (Blair has already come out and said as much), then this is not acceptable and needs to be stopped. It would set a precedent more damaging than the potential economic and social impact of leaving the EU.
People voted, whatever their reasons. That should be respected and implemented. Those decrying this are in wrong and shouldn’t complain in the same way that those who voted the Leave cannot whinge at the impact brexit will undoubtedly have on their lives.
Interesting turn of events. The Brexit camp seems to be in a state of disarray. Johnson won’t stand for PM and continues to pitch in from the sidelines, saying everyone else should do what he wants. Gove is about as popular as a rattlesnake in a tombola and now Farage has said he wants to spend more time in the pub. The only real advocate in Leadsom, who, only 3 years ago, went on record saying leaving the EU would be a “disaster”, but apparently changed her mind when she saw an opportunity to further her political career* (*my assessment, btw).
With Teresa May looking favourite to win the Tory leadership race (although by no means certain) and a legal challenge to ensure that the sovereignty of parliament is upheld through a democratic vote to invoke A50, then there will be precious few brexiters in a position of power or influence. Strange times indeed.
What was the point on giving the vote and then when it doesn’t go the way you want it try to deny it by underhand tactics, all this will do is justify why people voted out? I like to see the lawyers and mp’s brave enough to do that as there’ll be huge protests and blood on the streets for a long long time, democratic? Most know that the remain will now play dirty, sneaky and underhand but this? I doubt it as it really would spell the end of any democracy we had in this country, there’d be a near revolution.
Do you think Parliament will vote to not invoke A50 then? Jumping to conclusions, Bazza?
Also, there is a lovely irony in that you vote for leave the EU to preserve and expand the sovereignty of the British Parliament, but then don’t want the British Parliament to exercise the sovereignty that you voted for?
Thats not exactly true is it, the vote asked whether we should remain in the EU or not, that vote was given and it should be respected and to finish exercising sovereignty would actually mean respecting the vote not obstructing it.
