Modern players have no idea what real physical intimidation is like. Players like George Best used to have to put up with much worse with little protection from referees every time they played. Old style players rode tackles a lot better than modern day playersâŚthey had to. Every team had their hatchet menâŚit wasnât until the tackle from behind was outlawed in the early '70s that skillful players got the protection they deserved.
Having said that the histrionics does nothing for the advancement the game. Viewed by the casual observer it is ridiculous and they use it as an example why the game has lost its appeal to the older generation.
Oh I agree with all that, for sure.
Iâm not saying I like when Neymar (or, letâs be honest, the plenty of other players that do similar) throws himself down and roll about, Iâm just saying I get it.
It may have been worse for players once a upon a time, but I still donât particularly like how blatant it is when teams go out intentionally trying to injure players. As I said, Iâd much rather watch talented players doing their thing, than a bunch of thugs trying to kick lumps out of each other.

Well I think we football fans are singing from the same hymn sheet but you know what happens when the rugby fan lists all the thing they say that makes rugby a better game.
They trot out all the tired old stereotypical claptrapâŚunfortunately modern footballers give them plenty of ammunition.

To be fair, imho so far in this WC we havenât seen some of the really deliberate attempts to hurt players
And only 3 reds so far
Carlos Sanchez (straight red) - Colombia vs Japan
Jerome Boateng (two yellows) - Germany vs Sweden
Igor Smolnikov (two yellows) - Uruguay vs Russia
But surely yellow cards are wiped out at some stage?
Yes. In the quarter-finals when, just like in the Champions League, players are given a clean slate and are ready to go again.
Was it always like this?
No. FIFA first started wiping out yellow cards after the quarter-final round in the 2010 World Cup. By wiping yellow cards out ahead of the semi-finals, only a red card would prevent a player from missing the final.
Fifa used to wipe out yellow cards after the initial group stage. But the governing body wanted to make sure vital players would not be suspended for the final.
So instead of using a system that helps most teams it adopted a system that helps the best teams.
This just appeared on FBâŚ
No answer is thereâŚ
