I do not understand why we don’t leave one player (Armstrong or Archer maybe) up around the halfway line when defending corners. He would keep at least 2 opponents out of the attack

Yep this. Same under Ralph. If you head clear a corner, it often falls to one of their players. If you get possession on the edge of the area, there is no one ahead of you to possibly make a break.
