From what Iāve seen of that speech, and other recent rambling orations, it seems to me that Johnson is taking the idea of being āBritainās Trumpā very literally indeed. The style, if I can glorify it with that term, is very Trump - apparently off the cuff and unquestionably incoherent. But whereas Trump always seems to have an adoring audience whoāll cheer him to the echo, the only place that Johnson will have that is at the Tory conference - and even then Iām not so sure that heāll have it there.
Will the British public in general warm to this? After all, this is a major part of why so many Tory MPs, many of whom canāt stand Johnson, voted for him as leader nonetheless - they thought that heād have the magic touch in an election to keep them in government. I think they may now be looking on in horror, and serve them fucking right too.
