If it was known it was ignored, the movement for the statue to be removed only started after the Professor spoke about it, what next Nelsonâs column?
My point it quite rightly it opens dialogue but is that solely reserved to the UK or say Benin?
Iâm confused as to your position. You seem to be saying the statue should have been removed but at the same time statues shouldnât be removed.
It should have been taken down a long time ago and there need to be conversations about others hence I stated Nelsons column, he was supposedly an advocate of slavery, the song Penny Lane after James Penny (allegedly) should be removed from the Beatles playlist if proven.
Gandhi for his racist views? Mandela for being a terrorist (to some)? Shall we tear down the coliseum?
I mean to say where will and does this end?
We canât watch Gladiator as Russell Crowe is an invading cunt into Germania?
Captain Jack Sparrow is a wankpiece of the high seas?
Hopefully, with the equation of the films youâve seen with modern issues.
At Worlds End should have won an OscarâŚ
Iâm with @Barry-Sanchez, can we really apply todayâs principals to things that happened centuries ago and were the norm then? Obviously we move on and learn and adapt our behaviour.
From all accounts Colston also did a lot of good in Bristol with his slave money, should that all be torn down too??
yeah, take his statue down and put it in a museum but donât start rewriting history
However the issue today is not slavery, but the way not everyone is treated equally, and that applies across all the creeds and racesâŚand, it is a 2 way street, look at the way some of the Asian countries treat non-asians etc. etc. etc. it is not solely a white on coloured problemâŚ
You chose the worst of the cornetto trilogyâŚ
This like many things gets highjacked by the extreme left and anarchists, they want a class war and to overthrow the state.
Class does play a major issue in our fault lines in this nation to be fair.
Yes, we learn and understand that celebrating someone who enslaved thousands of people and branded them with the name of his company is not ok.
No but we donât need to celebrate someone who was responsible for thousands of Africans being thrown into the sea after dying on his ships.
Who wants to rewrite history? I donât understand this point.
What is this? Yes, of course recognise that discrimination is not entirely White against non white but what youâre doing here is defending inaction in this country by saying others need to address their own issues.
This is incredibly offensive.
It canât possibly be the blacks that are angry and organising these protests. Someone else must be doing it. The extreme left, theyâre doing it. Those black people know their place and wouldnât kick up a fuss.
Hitler built the autobahns. Should we still have statues of him in Germany?
Where have I said that?
I didnât say you said it. I said your assertion is offensive.
Iâm remembering why I avoided this thread originally.
How is taking a statue down celebrating it?
By him being thrown into the harbour, its made it more divisive than ever between mob rule and law and order.
The statue should have come down years ago with consent, the council did nothing and I get that but this in my opinion wasnât the way to go about it, its counter productive.
Class war were in London yesterday and I can bet your bollocks to a barndance they were also in Bristol.
Jesus
Taking the statue down isnât celebrating it. Having a statue to honour the man is the celebration. Thatâs what statues are for.
Well you can say you want about him but accroding to Pap Hitler canât half knock up some motorway by himself, that itself deserves a statueâŚ
The nature of protests is that anyone is free to turn up. These protests were organised by BLM because they want to be heard. Youâre trying to take that away from them by saying other people are in charge. You canât even credit black people for organising themselves.
Statues should not be taken down simply because they are Statues.
However in Bristol that PARTICULAR Statue caused enough offence for enough complaints to be made that the Council decided to act.
The Council could have reworded the Plinth they did not. Twice.
They COULD have moved it to a Museum where a better explanation of his harm AND good deeds for the benefit of the City could have been put in context
Fact is a Local Government failed to act on the wishes of the people.
A common failing globally.
The statue caused offence to the Citizens of Bristol it was a local issue. The fact that a statue in London is offending someone oop north is irrelevant to this case
