Yes but being cruel to everyone is not really an excuse is it… teh problem with these shows as with ‘Come fly with me’ Is that although teh original premise was actually a parody of the ‘Airline’ /reality TV, by dressing up as a big black woman and other stereotypes, you make it acceptable to those who simply dont differentiate between the pastiche and laughing at the minority

On an individual level, I dont belief many are offended by ‘Precious’ in fact two (black) guys in my old office thought it hilarious as they knew folks exactly like that… the fact the character was black was irrelevant, it was just a funny, however both also said teh problem was that for tho casual racists, it merely ingrains teh stereotypes and makes it acceptable to laugh at them…

Of course but does this movement only happen in Western privileged nations or poorer ones? I say this as I don’t know but are you aware of the Genghis Khan monument in Mongolia?
Should the coliseum be torn down in Rome?
Consultation has to happen now and action has to be guaranteed if deemed but where does this end as I say this now it won’t end where we’re all closer together going this way about it.
Is there an expiry date on unjustified actions?

There is a difference between a slave trader statue which was erected to celebrate the achievements of some one whose wealth and status was created by the sickening slave trade… and something like the coliseum in Rome… that was a building in which Christians were murdered etc, but the building itself was not erected later to celebrate the fact. Everyone knows what went on there and the history is explained… I doubt anyone would think it was celebrating what went on there.

The more you know the more you actually know this could become an absolute farce in people trying to weave their through trying to excuse things.

This is going to be huge, uncomfortable conversations and education and acknowledgement? Definitely but I fear it will divide more than unite but if that the price to be paid then I suppose we have to go down that route.

The coliseum was created no doubt on the backs of slavery.

I do feel uneasy about statues being taken down because who knows where it will end. Of course statues celebrating slavers shouldn’t have been erected in the first place, it is making a statement saying, ‘this is a great man’, which Colston clearly wasn’t. The plaque below the statue described him as a good and virtuous man which is disgusting, i can fully understand people of colour in Bristol being extremely pissed off having to walk past this while going about their daily lives. But surely a better solution would be to leave the statues where they are and have a plaque at each one, with a biography of each subject spelling out in graphic detail how they made their money, what they did, what their views were regarding their fellow humans. Then it would no longer be a celebration of ‘great men’ but a shaming of them. Instead of locking them away in some museum surely it would be more beneficial to use the statues to educate people.
More than a few right wingers staunchly defending Colston and going into apoplexy about ‘mindless vandalism’ and the like. Does anyone know how many of them were up in arms about the grave of Karl Marx being vandalized recently for about the third time, the headstone being sprayed with far right graffiti? Would that be zero? Hypocrites.

What doesn’t help in this whole debate is having a Prime Minister at this time who is openly racist, all documented, which results in him having no moral authority at all in these matters. As a racist he is not in the same league as his hero Churchill of course, now he had some particularly vile racist views. His statue will be a target now inevitably which is a shame. Far better to have the plaque underneath it with some of his writings for all to read, educate themselves. There would be no shortage of material.

As for stealing their lands he was all for it.

Far better to put these writings on a plaque underneath his statue and let people read them and educate themselves.

The/these statue/s should have gone a long time ago, they should have gone on consultation with the people they offended, street names should have the origins of their names at eye view so everyone can be educated in how the name came to be.
Some of Gandhi’s views were absolutely shocking towards his fellow Indians and towards Africans, he also wasn’t anti Empire.
Its the mob rule that concerns me, policing by consent, I’ve been unfortunate enough today to have seen some horrible pictures and scenes from the US, this has gone on from a peaceful protest to innocents being killed.
How do we stop this?

Seems like people were trying to put something on the Colston statue (like it or not he left a fuck load of money to Bristol which has done a lot of good) but nobody could agree on the wording…

In 2018, with involvement of the community, text for a new official plaque was agreed for the statue to inform the public about more of Colston’s history.[33] Conservative councillor Richard Eddy and the Society of Merchant Venturers (an organisation Colston belonged to) objected to the wording, and were successful in – among other things – removing mention of Colston’s role as a Tory MP and the selective nature of his philanthropy, and disputed the exact number and ages of the thousands of children he trafficked.[33] The new wording was vetoed by the Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees, who saw the Society having too much say in the process, instructing more parts of the community to be involved in producing the plaque.[33]

In the same Wikipedia article it would also appear that Colston’s name has slowly been removed from schools and buildings since 2016…

To add some context (perhaps unfair), this is councillor Richard Eddy that you mention.

HBO have now removed Gone With the Wind, on the grounds that it portrays black slaves apparently content with their positions, and remaining loyal to their “owners” after abolition. I’ve no idea if this is justified, never having had the inclination to sit through 4 hours of Clark Gable.

He wanted the fact that Colston was a Tory removed from the new wording…

Django Unchained for Samuel L Jackson’s role?

Apparently they will reinstate it with an advisory warning at the beginning, like they do for sex/violence/swearing. It has already been done with Tom and Jerry cartoons. I for one have always questioned period fiction ever since Braveheart, if something bothers me I’ll use that as an opportunity to try and get the truth behind the fictional portrayal. I’m currently working my way through Boardwalk Empire and once I’ve finished it (if it doesn’t get pulled from Sky) I’d be interested to read around what was actually going on in the USA in the 20’s, and if it doesn’t quite match up then so be it, otherwise entertainment will have very little room for artistic license.

We saw Green Book when it came out. Decent film tbh, but it somehow grated on me when the white characters constantly used the rather incongruous term “eggplant” to deride the black ones. The film would have felt far more realistic and hard-hitting if they hadn’t sanitised it in that way.
