I think a lot of lesser known slang, particularly if it is from over here, gets missed by the Americans.
Whedon knows it, and has got form for this sort of thing.
I seem to remember an episode of Angel where Wesley calls the eponymous hero a wanker. Firefly was full of very rude Mandarin too.
