Some reflection.
It was a game that the scoreline will show we won fairly comfortably, having just short of 60% of the possession, and whilst Villa had only one less than our 17 shots on goal – 11 corners to 6 in Saints favour demonstrated that for the large part, we were in the ascendancy, and our attacking threat produced far more panic in the Villa box than theirs did in ours.
There were some excellent individual performances. Shane Long (Man of the Match) with one goal and two assists for Dusan Tadic, who finished cooly on both occasions, and put in a tidy performance himself. Ryan Bertrand was excellent raiding down the left flank, and done Hutton for pace and skill on a number of occasions, adding an assist himself in the process.
Cedric played well, combining well with Tadic down the right, providing a nice assist for Mane’s headed 4th, and did very well to make a crucial goal-saving tackle, and later cleared one off the line. It was also good to see Jay-Rod back, and looking lively up front.
We were fluent in our attacking play, always creating chances and looking likely to score – however, it was pretty disappointing that we switched off at the back on a few occasions, our own complacency twice letting Villa back into the game, and creating unnecessary pressure for us, as Villa came back at us for a spell toward the end of the game, and for a brief moment, the three points felt a little on dodgy ground.
Fortunately our pace on the counter undone Villa throughout, and Mane was able to capitalise on one of these, to put the game to bed at 4-2.
Liverpool drop points at home from a 2-0 lead, after that cunt Lallana got what looked to be the clincher – only for Newcastle to fight back for a 2-2 draw. Excellent. A very big “fuck you!” Adam.
Nice afternoon’s work all in all. Well done to the lads.
