Can I offer a little bit of Saints-Forum admin love for Steve at Fiver Web.
It’s a fucking thankless task dealing your average forum user (no offence, Sotonians - well a little) and scaling a forum to cope with the sort of numbers they get at saintsweb is a complex and costly exercise.
You can be a benevolent dictator with deep pockets and tell everyone to lump it when things aren’t running right - Twitter bug, cough, or you create paying customers and try to generate enough cash to keep it running, but likely fail - not enough cash and not enough hardware.
It’s lose lose unless you’re a masochist.
Apropos of nothing in particular, kudos to @pap as his Ukraine-hosted denial of service attack has yielded great results!

You can, and having dealt with the early days of Sotonians, I have some sympathy.
But then again, nothing that ever came up took me that long to fix, and within a few months we were developing the platform.

Yeah, it’s not great.
Reading between the lines and seeing what Steve posted over there as his rationale, it’s a joint problem of making sure they’ve got enough hardware to scale to support the demand and him not being prepared to subsidise the costs anymore.
So I think he COULD solve the problem but it’ll co$t.

As @CB-Saint said earlier, it’s the fact he’s charging money for it which is the real fucker.
I don’t really buy the rationale either. If it was choking on a match day, fair play. It’s choking at almost all hours of the day. It’s not even accessible for half of it.
Now either they’re so amazingly popular that they just cannot cope with the demand, or so amazingly under-resourced on their hosting platform that they can’t deal with their underlying demand.
It’s cloudfront, which is Amazon’s thing. I think he just hasn’t bought enough server time to serve that site’s needs.
Glasgow Saint refused to sponsor me again so I gave in and paid the £5 tax. Shortly after that Steve changed the forum software.
I paid it so I could continue my epic internet battle with Turkish!

So a couple of weeks ago when, Kenny (I think) pointed out their issues, I managed to read the thread discussing it and Steve was then saying that he was having trouble with scaling on demand.
At that time he was saying that the point where they needed to spin up additional tin to spread the load was difficult to predict. I guess that if he’s still having problems identifying that and it’s still up and down then, as you say his problems are more fundamental.
Fiver mountain is now Fiver canyon.

The most members they’ve ever had online at one time is an impressive 1,160, which I think is more than this entire site.
