An Irish pirate?

Anne Bonny as it was international womens day

Not a woke non-bloke then

Bit of back-slapping here.

Woke is now the discussion of du jour.

Sotonians. Come for the unrequited promise of Saints chat. Stay to discuss the anxieties of tomorrow today.

Its all bollocks… I defer to Sir Billy de Bragg for the definitive word on the matter

For context this was lifted from FB page and his critique of Morgan

‘‘Morgan has long been a belligerent cheer leader in the war on empathy waged by the likes of the tabloids he used to work for. The anti-empathy brigade have invented a whole series of spurious terms in an attempt to rationalise their refusal to show compassion to the victims of discrimination: ‘political correctness’, ‘virtue signaling’ or more recently ‘wokeness’ are all imaginary problems conjored up to give the perpetrators of abusive and discriminatory behaviour a sense of victimhood, with the aim of deflecting any attempt to hold the status quo to account for the injustices that it quietly turns a blind eye to’’

I think “woke” a bit of a broader concept than Piers Morgan’s protests or the book “expert Piers” wrote on the subject.

It’s the veneration of ascribed identities, the disproportionate damage that can cause. It’s about not wanting to offend trumping common sense. It’s about things that were fine to say five years ago being taboo now.

And I’m not talking about people being able to roll out racial slurs. I’m talking about the ability of people to state things that used to be self-evident.

Kindergarten Cop would probably never get a release today without a script edit. The reason?

One of the kids says “boys have a penis and girls have a vagina”.

Shocking stuff.

The #MeToo allegatations take another career.

Pepe Le Pew, the infamous stalker of Warner Bros cartoons, has been cancelled.

The character is no longer suitable for inclusion due to a string of recorded stalking incidents recorded in the 1960s.

Le Pew could not be reached for comment at this time.

My girlfriend thinks I’m a stalker.

Well, she’s not exactly my girlfriend yet.

Remember John Stalker?

I can’t forget him. It’s not even his job as a plod that sticks with me. It’s what he did next.

Went on to advertise awnings with slogans like:-

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could live without the constant glare of the sun?

I’m like, you live in Greater Manchester John. Only Mordor saw less sun last year.

I came across a new phrase today

Neuro-diverse

Supposedly a nice way a describing someone with a condition like autism or ACHD

I now understand the definition of getting old - it’s when you can’t keep up with the avalanche of new terminology that is attached to things

WTAF…it’s starting to get silly now

Don’t worry if you’re over 40 you don’t need to keep up to date with anything. Just do your own thing, don’t let anything like this stress you it’s of no import.

The younger generation who find this worthy of their attention don’t think anyone over the age of 40 is capable of making any useful contribution to society anyway.

Deep breath…and relax. :lou_lol:

Tis true to some extent… but (there is always a but)… things do become less acceptable as we learn more… would anyone still be comfortable using the word negro, despite the fact as Stan says, its original use was mot intended to offend, but to ‘label’ ?

Its like the term ‘political correctness gone mad’… usually spouted by those Mail readers complaining they cant be casually racist in tbe office anymore as ‘chalky’ was just a nickname…

Words obviously need context to offend, but I would always say its should be left to those the words are aimed to to determine if they are offended by them or not, not by someone who simply wants to use them?

A “condition”??

That implies some kind of disorder, malady, illness, and suggests that the person with such a characteristic has something wrong with them.

And there’s no place for that kind of thinking in this day and age.

Gotta love cancel culture
