So, as Steven Davis made his 150th Appearance for the Mighty Red and White on Sunday at Leicester – the OS has marked the occasion with a brief tribute on their website and with a twitter video of even more brevity:
Often spoken of by some as an “unsung” hero for us during his time here, and by others still as “under-rated” – let us Sotonians come together (no, not like that lads) – to ‘sing’ (his praises) and ‘rate’ his time with us.
For me, Steve Davis has been a superb purchase. Whole-hearted, committed, and always wears his heart on his sleeve (which I sincerely hope doesn’t lead to a nasty case of tachycardia, as that would be bad and could have a detrimental effect on his performances!).
An influential player for us indeed. So often the man that makes us tick (no heart related jokes please, they’re so lame ) linking our midfield to the front line, dropping into space and always looking to receive the ball to offer an option, his tireless workrate to put the opposition under pressure is an invaluable component in the way we play.
Cheers Steven for all your efforts in a Saints shirt (cos I’m sure you must read Sotonians, who doesn’t!?) and here’s to many more.
Having lived in NI for a few years, I know a bit of the lingo, and can often be heard in Itchen North shouting Good man, Steven! in a legally actionable NI accent. It’s only because Stormont lawyers are still busy trying to get Kurt Sutter for Sons of Anarchy that I remain unsued.
Even so, good man, Steven. Was a respectable bit of business from thestart. I seem to remember us being one of the few clubs not to take the royal piss out of New Rangers Company’s complete lack of legal legs to stand on. We could have just signed him and told them to fuck off, but we gave them half a mil and built up tons more in goodwill.
Everyone was rather difficult to assess in that first season up with Adkins, but I had loads of people at work tell me we’d done really well to get him, and that he would be excellent for us. And so it has come to pass. Always looks up for it and doesn’t hide, even if his skills or circumstances let him down.
He’s a consistent performer and can always be relied upon to put a shift in. He offers decent cover form midfield and can play in a number of positions. OK, he aint spectacular, but he’s never let us down. And for less than £1m. Top piece of business I reckon.
He really is the polar opposite to Osvaldo - a cheap buy who has had a big impact on the pitch, as opposed to an expensive purchase whose only impact was fonte’s head
