Bit of an epic 7 hour drive through snowy mountains and by fjords and partly on very rough gravel roads. Early this morning we were advised not to try it but it cleared enough to do it - but very slow and tortuous in places. Definite 4x4. But absolutely amazing scenery.
I am assured by the locals that this IS summer. Minus fucking five Celsius. There’s a great hot tub at our latest lodge but I’d be coated in ice the moment I get out.
That’s what I remember most, the sheer coldness of it and feeling chilled to the core. The temperatures don’t look that bad to the casual glance, but it feels so much colder than they suggest. I never really felt less than frozen for the entire week we were there. Having said that, I was underweight and not particularly well at the time so that probably made it seem worse.
My trip there had time to do Blue Lagoon on way to airport.
Loved it.
But.
It was April -4 with windchill at -10.
And a 40m walk from the pool to the door of the changing room.
That was cold dear God that was cold
Did it in Jan 2020 - bloody cold but magical to be able to disappear into the mist with a cold beer and soak up heat and beer in equal measures (pics taken after warming up)
