Iāve had a few* work for me thatāll be over the moon at that news.
* One cunt still owes me hundreds, but on a plus side his dealer can add a nought to my grumbles.
Edit: Bletch, Bob, pap, I know iāve been told, but why does this * change again, what do i have to do to rectify the situation and more importantly, why hasnāt one of you lazy twats simplified it for the simple
You have to put a slash in front of the star.
\
Like that.
There is a really geeky reason for this, but as you probably donāt need help sleeping, Iāll just say that the slash means treat what comes next as literal.
i.e slash followed by a star means just display a star.
A star on its own means create a bullet.
Thanks Bob.
And Bletch(as i write), that simple explanation weirdly does help.
Well, why the fuck didnāt you tell us that in the first place. Do you think weāre all idiots? oh, waitā¦
\this \is \a \fucking \shit \way \to \run \a \website
Wonder if anyone else self-identifies as a woman to get a cheap half pint
Youāve just revealed Bletchās real name to whole world.
Impressed with the Dr title Bletch, but surprised you had to state the identity
Iām pretty sure everyone knows Bletchās real name - Isnāt that right Dave?
Sure is Ethel
I told you not to let that outā¦
Just wait until I see you next!
Will i even recognise you?
You donāt normally.
I just look for the bloke with the rum filled hip-flask being refused entry to the ground
Fuck sake, bletch.
Itās a backslash character, and in this context, it is an āescapeā character.
@Cobham-Saint - as bletch points out, certain characters carry special significance. * is one, + is another.
If you want to escape that special use and just have a regular old asterix or plus sign, you put the escape character ( a backslash , @saintbletch ) in front of it.
If you want to escape the escape character, same rule applies. Put a backslash in front of it.
\
ā¦and there is the geeky definition I referred to yesterday.
Anyone still awake at this point should note that @pap is correct, it is a backslash.
For his next trick pap will walk you through the dash family of Unicode characters followed by a 300 slide slideshow of his holiday in Cyprus in 1983.
Itās Linux now grandad !
Dynix/PTX FTW
I am not a grandad, thank you very much.
Iām a great uncle, which is almost as bad, except other peopleās kids make me feel old instead.
