If the UN had existed while Hitler was in power, I’m sure he’d have done a softer speech.
Honestly, if it wasn’t so fucking tragic it would be funny. Trump is threatening North Korea, a country that the US created and sustained, because NK is firing missiles over Japan, famous for being the only country that has ever had nukes dropped on it. Those nukes were dropped by the US, who are also worried about Iran getting them.
Basically, every single criticism that Trump had of these “evil” states can be applied more convincingly to his own country.
The UN needs to be disbanded. True, it has rarely been fit for purpose, but when the US President is rolling up to announce that he’ll totally destroy another country (the millions dead in the fifties obviously not enough) then it’s clear that the organisation either needs to disband or quit New York.
The UN Security Council is composed of 15 Members: five permanent members: China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.
The five permanent powers have the right to veto any proposals. Where do you think a lot of today’s problems lie? It seems pretty obvious that this is an outmoded set up and needs to change.
Are we also that relevant in the world today that we should still have that permanent place, arguably the UK’s power was on the wane even before the end of WW2?
It’s as toothless as its League of Nations forerunner, but for the opposite reason. The League had too little big party buy in. The UN has too much, allowing them to vet0 any progress and overlook any sin.
The US President marched into the UN today, an organisation supposed to promote peace and cooperation, and delivered a threat of death and destruction, the very things he said he was trying to prevent.
The UN may well object in the strongest possible terms, but it won’t matter. However well intentioned the UN has been, it has been a device to ensure the immunity of the WW2 victors when doing what the bally hell they want on the international stage.
By rights, our illegal wars of aggression should have resulted in sanctions and possible military action. The UN was doomed from the start. The reality is that it was designed to allow World War II victors and their allies to escape substantive international sanctions for crimes against humanity.
