:trumpdumb: Trumped!

Which makes it all the more depressing Phil.

Sometimes, the long game is the right way to go.
The impeachment was a morally right knee jerk but reading some of the wiser pundits who explained the pitfalls, it was the wrong choice.
IF he’d been found guilty it would have possibly been explosively divisive. He’d have become a martyr.
Now let time and more facts poison him even more

Makes sense. I hope that it works!

What was the point?

To stop him from being called “Mr President”?

To stop him being President again.

Don’t they have elections and primaries for that?

Seems mightily counter-productive if you ask me. All that’s really happened is he’s got ammunition to say he’s been hounded by the forces he’s always warned you about.

Hounded with good reason though! How can someone who incites a riot and tries to prevent a democratically elected President taking his post get away Scot free?

The question someone more “Learned” should answer is.
Does Trump have a criminal case to answer?
Then the choice between a maybe not constitutionally sound political stunt and a jury made up of 50% of Trump party members or a Judge & 12 independent Jurors should have been made.

Impeachment was, tbh, a pointless political gesture the moment Trump left office

I reckon civil cases will follow.

Which could bankrupt him…

It may not have had a high chance of success but at least it sent a message and put the Republicans in a position where they actually supported Trump’s actions. Hopefully the floating voters will remember that in the forthcoming midterms and the next main election.
As for private prosecutions, there must be many Congressmen and women whose lives were put in danger who would want some kind of justice.

Think that would still be too “political” the families of the dead would be much more powerful.
Unfortunate but true

It begins.

BBC News - Independent commission to investigate Capitol riots

Facebook considering reinstating his account. I’m torn. On one side he’s used it for so much false information and incendiary rhetoric, he should stay banned for good. But that gives him a grievance, so maybe reinstate but on unprotected terms, like anyone else. Then ban him permanently next week after his inevitable late-night lying rants.

Facebook have a huge issue on their hands.

By banning trump, they are imparting editorial control - by demonstrating editorial control they can’t hide behind the fact that they are just a platform and have no liability for what is posted on it.

If they are liable for what is posted on it, they will go out of business

Interesting conundrum. But newspapers are liable for what they publish and although social media outlets are not “newspapers” they still are a vehicle by which allow people to disseminate their views and comments to a wider audience. My thinking is that as soon as you provide a platform for people you have to take some responsibility for what appears on that platform. If they are removing racial abuse they are already exercising censorship. If Trump had deemed to post inflammatory posts and has been banned, why let him back to do the same (probably). He had his chance, why give him a second bite of the cherry. He can moan all he likes but he has to understand that the rules are for everyone and he doesn’t get a free pass just because he is Trump. He does a lot more damage with a mouthpiece than he does without. We don’t need any further evidence what a divisive and dangerous character he is. There is plenty of evidence out there. It is time he paid the consequences of his actions.

I take issue with the whole concept of incitement.

I guess, at the heart of it, is something that at least one adult said to us as kids.

If Donny told you to jump off a bridge, would you do it?

No-one can incite anyone, imo. If we’re going after people, how’s about looking at the idiots that acted?

If this were really true we wouldn’t need a word for it would we?
