Southampton Were “Keen to Move Swiftly” to Complete Clyne Deal

Despite fears of a long and drawn out transfer saga, the deal to send Nathaniel Clyne to Liverpool was done quickly and with a minimum of fuss, which according to Southampton was a key goal.

Another transfer window, another player headed from Southampton to Liverpool. This time around, things even went rather smoothly—more Rickie Lambert than Dejan Lovren. And according to Southampton director of football Les Reed, getting the deal done quickly was a priority.

“With Nathaniel’s contract entering its final year, it was important that his future was resolved this summer,” Reed told Saints’ official website following Clyne’s sale. “With Cedric Soares now in place and it becoming clear that Nathaniel did not wish to extend his deal, we were keen to swiftly move on early in our pre-season schedule.”

It was clear Southampton were prepared to sell Clyne when Soares arrived for £5M last month. The latest in a long line of thoroughly scouted bargain-buys, Soares was down to a year left on his deal at Sporting just as was the case with Clyne at Southampton, and he looks likely to become a major hit for Southampton.

Having pushed his way into the Portugal squad over the current qualification round, the 23-year-old is a rising talent with great potential. There is a risk in his purchase, though—more of a risk that in Liverpool paying two-and-a-half times the fee for the far more proven Clyne. Still, he looks a very solid signing for the south coast club.

And whatever happens for Soares at Southampton and Clyne at Liverpool, it’s good for both clubs to have gotten the deals done early and with a minimum of fuss—particularly after some of the teeth-gnashing dramatics of last summer and early signs the Clyne deal might become a similarly unpleasant saga.

“We have now been able to conclude our negotiations with Liverpool,” added Reed, “and we thank Nathaniel for his efforts during the past three seasons.”

Saints start loan man deal talks

Southampton have opened talks with Atletico Madrid over a permanent move for central defender Toby Alderweireld.

Amid speculation that Tottenham are ready to hijack their attempts to land the 26-year-old Belgium international, it is understood the south-coast club are hoping to steal a march on other interested parties having already entered into negotiations with the Spanish outfit.

Alderweireld, who joined Atletico from Dutch club Ajax in September 2013, spent last season on loan at St Mary’s and made 26 Premier League appearances, all of them starts, as the Saints finished in an impressive seventh place.

Manager Ronald Koeman is keen to retain his services and, while any deal may prove complicated, he is optimistic.

Speaking earlier this week, Koeman said: “The player likes to stay, we like to keep the player but it’s a little difficulty at the moment with Atletico Madrid. I have a good hope he will stay for Southampton.”

The Saints prospered last season despite significant changes in their squad following the summer departures of Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers, and the manager will hope for less of a turnover this time around amid uncertainty over the futures of Alderweireld and midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

QUIZ: Who are these Southampton players scoring against?

How good is your memory? Give it a test and see if you can identify the teams these Saints players are scoring against.

Look out for some telling clues in the photos if the answer isn’t too obvious.

Who is the best fit for Morgan Schneiderlin?

Southampton and France midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has been one of the most wanted players in the Premier League for the past two summer windows, and looks set to actually leave St Mary’s this time round, with a host of suitors chasing his signature.

Manchester United and Arsenal appeared to be the leading lights in the race for the former Strasbourg midfielder’s signature, with former pursuers Tottenham and Liverpool seen as out of the race.

Early rumour put Schneiderlin on the verge of a move to North London to join Arsenal, but in the last week there has been serious talk of a move to Manchester United and now many bookmakers have stopped taking bets on his future.

Whilst he may well end up at United, it may not be the best move for him as a player or for his career, but here at Touchline Talk we will work out which club provides the best fit for him going forward.

Obviously the first possibility is that Schneiderlin defies expectation and stays at Southampton for another season, and help them in their Europa League campaign.

This would be a good fit for the 25-year-old in some ways as he fits nicely into the team that Ronald Koeman led to so much success last season with his tough-tackling and fantastic ball distribution.

He has a key role in the team that has seen the man from Obernai break into the national team in the last year to 18 months and staying at the club and playing guaranteed first-team football will only help him develop, improve and mature as a player.

That said, the player has stated previously that he has ambitions to play in the Champions League and as the Saints can’t offer him that at the moment, he might be unhappy or perhaps disgruntled, which may detriment the team.

The first major club linked with the Frenchman this summer was of course the Gunners, a club at which he could be a fantastic fit.

Firstly, he would provide the defensive midfielder coverage that Arsenal really do need in the middle of the park, easing the burden on Francis Coquelin and adding some much-needed depth to their squad as they look to challenge on all four fronts next season.

Similarly, he is very comfortable with the ball at his feet, with a pass success rate of 89.3% last season and this fits very well with the ‘attractive’ brand of football Arsene Wenger seems keen to pursue.

However, with so many midfield options at the Emirates he may not get as much game time as he would with the Saints or perhaps United, and also he lacks the physical aspect to his game that other options Arsenal are targeting have, such as Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho.

Old Trafford does seem to be the most likely destination we will see Schneiderlin playing his football in next season and it is feasibly the best fit of the two big clubs he could move to.

The club are in need of someone in midfield to act as the general and overall creative genius at the base of the diamond, and whilst Michael Carrick is still capable of doing that, he is now 34 and Schneiderlin serves as a ready made replacement for the former Spurs man.

Schneiderlin would most likely get more game time at United than he would at Arsenal and overall United seems to be the best fit if he moves away from Southampton, but they would be a good choice as well should he stay with them.

Overall United seems to be the best natural fit for him, but there is nothing to say that at Arsenal or another pursue his arrival would not lead to some sort of shake-up in the team and include him in a pivotal role.

What do you think? Where do you think he will end up, and were the best fit for him would be? Let us know in the comments section below!

Southampton begin Alderweireld talks?

Southampton have reportedly began negotiations with Atletico Madrid over a permanent move for Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld.

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at St Mary’s, making 26 Premier League appearances and helping Southampton to the second-best defence in the league.

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be keen on hijacking the Saints’ move, but, according to PA, Southampton are the first to have begun talks with the defender.

Alderweireld still has two years left on his Atletico contract. He joined the Spanish side from Ajax two years ago, but only made 12 La Liga appearances in his debut season before being sent to Southampton.

Reports: Daniel Levy to fly out to Spain to negotiate Alderweireld deal

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is set to fly out to Spain this week to negotiate a deal for Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, according to the London Evening Standard.

The 26-year-old joined Diego Simeone’s side from Ajax in the summer of 2013, but his time at the Vicente Calderon was far from fruitful, despite picking up a La Liga winners medal with the Spanish giants.

Tottenham to receive £1 million for former player Iago Falque

With the likes of Diego Godin and Joao Miranda ahead of him in the pecking order, Alderweireld was watching on from the bench and so Southampton coach Ronald Koeman took a chance on the Belgium international last year.

The loan move reaped the dividends for Southampton, with the defender developing a formidable partnership alongside Jose Fonte in the heart of the Saints’ backline.

The Standard now reports that the Saints are one of the sides who now want Alderweireld on a permanent deal this summer – they actually have first option on the defender – but that could change in the wake of Levy’s latest move.

The report indicates that Atletico are expecting Levy to travel to the Spanish capital to meet with them this week and discuss terms for Alderweireld’s potential move.

The La Liga club are also demanding a minimum of €14 million (£10m) for Alderweireld, which is well within Tottenham’s price range, according to the Standard.

Toby Alderweireld recorded an 80% pass accuracy in the league for Southampton last season.

Shrewd Southampton savouring a great summer despite more key player sales | Premier League | Premier League

For a second summer in succession Southampton find themselves assuming the position of spectator as fatter felines pilfer the finest assets from their dressing room before stuffing a wad of cash in their breast pocket upon leaving.

The sale of Nathaniel Clyne to Liverpool (who else?) is widely anticipated to be a precursor to the departure of the sticky-tape and lolly sticks that held the Saints’ midfield together last term, Morgan Schneiderlin.

These high-profile exoduses come 12 months after Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren were whisked away to Anfield for a combined sum weighing in around the £50m mark, tyro full-back Luke Shaw was sold to Manchester United for a further £30m and Arsenal took his right-sided counterpart Calum Chambers for £16m.

The first campaigns beyond the confines of St Mary’s were frustrating ones for each member of the costly quintet and the contrasting fortunes Southampton simultaneously savoured has formed the basis for the widely-held opinion that the south coast club actually had a great time of it in the transfer market last year, despite the pre-season prophecies of disaster that their mass sales sparked.

Similar, yet slightly more reserved, whispers have surfaced again this summer, but the business being conducted by the Saints this time around is arguably even better.

The deals done by Ronald Koeman’s side ahead of the 2015/16 edition makes them a shrewd bet to break into the top six, with a bulky 3/1 available for believers.

Managing to finish seventh and, subsequently, qualify for Europe after seeing their captain and most creative midfielder, top goalscorer, defensive lynchpin and both full-backs depart is a laudable achievement that has, to a certain extent, gone unheralded.

They’re in a more prominent position ahead of the coming season and have still managed to extract great prices from those keen to sign their star men.

The £12.5m prised out of Liverpool’s pocket for Clyne is a prime example.

He’s undoubtedly a good right-back, but such a sum for a player in the final year of his contract is incredible value, especially when it’s considered he was bought for a fraction of the figure and a replacement has already been sourced in Portuguese international Cedric Soares.

Drafting in a midfielder of comparable quality to Schneiderlin will be tough, but the Saints’ recruitment team have previous in this department, while the fee north of £20m they’re sure to cop for a potential disruptive influence on squad morale will make their task a little easier.

Dani Osvaldo takes us from a Frenchman who might cause trouble to a fully-fledged bad apple; his release is yet another shrewd bit of tie severance from the Southampton decision makers.

It was a financial gut shot the club could easily absorb on the back of the bargains struck across the year.

Elsewhere, the loan of goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg provides international-class cover for arguably the signing of last season Fraser Forster, striker Juanmi offers much-needed assistance for Graziano Pelle and the club remain in the hunt to sign Belgian centre-back Toby Alderweireld on a permanent basis.

Completing the latter deal and effectively replacing Schneiderlin will leave the club poised to challenge those who squeezed them out of the highest echelons in 2014/15.

Southampton reject £20m bid from Manchester United for Morgan Schneiderlin

Southampton have rejected a £20m ($31m) bid for Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United, according to the Telegraph.

The Red Devils have made the midfielder their priority target this summer but need to meet the Saints’ £25m ($39m) valuation for the transfer to go through, which currently is at a standstill.

Arsenal and Tottenham are also interested, but the Gunners have cooled down their pursuit, with Arsene Wenger believing in Francis Coquelin to pull a whole season together.

The Frenchman has been in brilliant form since arriving on the scene in the second half of the season and will warrant a starting spot ahead of any player Wenger might be looking to bring in as back-up.

Tottenham are also in the mix but are unlikely to succeed in signing the player, with Schneiderlin unwilling to move to a club not in the Champions League.

Tottenham and Southampton have both qualified for the Europa League, with the Saints having to play an extra qualifier to be eligible to get through into the group stages.

Manager Ronald Koeman recently came out stating that United are yet to make a proper offer for the player.

“We have the situation with Morgan Schneiderlin; we will have to wait what will happen. Until now, we have not a serious bid for him from Man United,” Koeman said, as quoted by the Mirror.

“We will wait, but OK – that’s business that normally starts from now. It’s no problem – it’s the first day.”

The France international will slot into the position occupied by Michael Carrick, who has been plagued with injuries this season, and act as a screen in front of their defence, allowing the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera to surge forward and help in attack.

Angel di Maria, who scored a brace for Argentina against Paraguay in the semi-finals of the Copa America, will also be gratified by the presence of a screen in midfield, allowing him and Juan Mata to surge forward without having to track back.

Netherlands coach Danny Blind rejected Manchester United role

Danny Blind has revealed he turned down a chance to work with Louis van Gaal at Manchester United last year.

The surprise statement came a day after Blind, father of United’s defensive midfielder Daley, was confirmed as the new head coach of the Netherlands following the departure of Guus Hiddink.

Blind, who was Hiddink’s assistant, has taken over from the 68-year-old who quit the national team less than a year after succeeding Van Gaal.

Blind, a former Sparta Rotterdam and Ajax defender, will begin his new role on August 1 but on his employment options at Old Trafford told Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad: "I had a fantastic offer from Manchester United.

“There were talks about United and Van Gaal a couple of times last year. But I rejected that. If you have ambition, what is more beautiful than becoming manager of your country?”

Van Gaal was named Manchester United manager, with Ryan Giggs as his assistant, in May last year, signing a three-year deal to succeed David Moyes.

The Netherlands are third in their Euro 2016 qualifying group after two defeats in their opening six games, behind Iceland and the Czech Republic.

Blind said: “Do I feel confident about qualifying? We know what we have to do: win four matches, starting with Iceland on 3 September.

"We can’t afford to lose any more games. But with our quality we are more than able to do it.”

Holland face a crucial match at home to Iceland on their return to action in September immediately followed by a difficult trip to face Turkey.
