Ex-Southampton star Toby Alderweireld reveals the truth behind his £11.5m Tottenham deal

Expand article…

The Belgian international joined the north London club for £11.5m shortly before the close of the transfer window.

Alderweireld, 26, has since cemented himself a role alongside compatriot Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the Spurs defence - playing every minute of their opening four games.

Alderweireld was widely expected to make his loan deal with Southampton permanent, but the Belgian says the decision was not entirely down to him.

Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld reveals all on controversial Southampton snub

Expand article…

The Belgium international had a deal in place to join Southampton permanently during the summer after his season-long loan deal last term. But when Atletico Madrid also accepted an £11.5million offer from Tottenham, the centre-half controversially opted for a move to White Hart Lane.

“It was not only up to me,” explained the 26-year-old, who has played every minute of Spurs’ four games this campaign. "Atletico had to make a deal with a club and they said ‘we have a deal with Tottenham’

"I said ‘I’m very happy with that’. My Belgium team-mates helped a little bit, but it was not the main reason to move here. “It was nice to move earlier than deadline day. The last couple of years were very stressful for me and this time I could sit on the couch and watch it!”

With Italy’s national team struggling, Pelle might be Azzuri’s savior

Expand article…

Graziano Pelle is quite the forgetful man. Italy’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Malta on Thursday had barely finished when a reporter from national broadcaster Rai thrust a microphone in the striker’s face and asked him which part of his body he had used to score the Azzurri’s only goal, which also won the game. “I don’t remember,” replied Pelle. “I’d have to watch a replay first.”

Those of us who had already seen the TV footage knew that Pelle had diverted Antonio Candreva’s cross into the net with an elbow. Behind the facade, you presume that Pelle, too, was aware.

“More than the Hand of God, this was the arm of a demon,” observed Friday morning’s edition of the newspaper La Repubblica, contrasting Pelle’s goal with the infamous one scored by Diego Maradona against England at the 1986 World Cup. If the Argentinian was a lavish player, then the Southampton striker has won over Italy manager Antonio Conte through his work-rate and willingness to battle.

Well, that and his knack for sticking the ball in the net. Thursday’s goal was Pelle’s third in five appearances for Italy, including a winner on his international debut in the reverse fixture against Malta last month. Between that night and this one, he has played a critical role in keeping Conte’s team on track for next season’s tournament in France despite the fact that they have not played very well.

Gazzetta dello Sport described the Italy side that lined up against Malta this week as “one of the worst in memory”. The Azzurri have a long history of performing poorly in qualification for European Championships and World Cups, only to sneak through anyway, but the degree to which they have struggled to break down the world’s 160th-ranked team both at home and away has been jarring.

Thirteen months into the job, Conte has few certainties in his team. Gigi Buffon remains a fixed point in goal, and the central defensive core will likewise be provided by Juventus, but everything beyond that is up for grabs. The manager has flipped between a 3-5-2 and a 4-3-3 formation, but in either case struggled to make Andrea Pirlo and Marco Verratti coexist in midfield, or find the right chemistry in attack.

Despite it all, Pelle has integrated seamlessly. He is exactly the sort of player Conte loves: physical, aggressive and willing to put his body on the line. But the greatest thing Pelle has going for him might be the fact he has spent the best years of his career outside of the nation he represents.

Playing centre-forward for Italy is a role that comes with quite some pressure attached. Just ask Mario Balotelli, Antonio Cassano or even Alessandro Del Piero, who took half a career to escape the shadow of Roberto Baggio with the national team.

Unlike those players, Pelle was able to slip into the line-up with zero expectations. The majority of his countrymen knew very little about him when he made his debut last October. He had only recently joined Southampton from Feyenoord, and there are not many households in Italy who tune in regularly to the Eredivisie.

Those who did remember him on the peninsula might have recalled a striker who rarely scored. Between stints at Lecce, Catania, Crotone, Cesena, Parma and Sampdoria, Pelle had managed just 21 goals in the five-and-a-bit seasons he spent playing in Serie A and Serie B.

One or two compatriots might even have remembered him for something different entirely. As an 11-year-old, Pelle won the national dancing championships in his age category for the Latin and ballroom styles.

But Pelle’s life had moved on just a little since then. Between 2012 and 2014, he scored 50 league goals for Feyenoord. Now he is thriving under the same manager, Ronald Koeman, at Southampton.

“Football in the Premier League is stupendous,” the striker would tell Sportweek magazine. “It never weighs on me to have to wake up in the morning and go to training. Even though mine is the best job in the world, it is still a job. But here it feels more like going to play five-a-side with your mates in the summer.”

Pelle observed in the same interview that Britain’s gossip columnists tend to focus their attention on the small handful of biggest clubs, and in particular the Englishmen who represent them. You suspect that by ignoring him, they might be missing a trick.

This is a man who, invited to add his signature to those of his teammates on a shopkeeper’s table at Feyenoord, left alongside it the aphorism: “I live like a Sheik, but I’m not”.

“I do not like to stay still and I do not mind going somewhere even if it’s only for 24 hours,” Pelle has since explained. “Maybe I will go to Dubai tomorrow morning, where I have bought an apartment, and then I will return the day after.”

Taken out of context, he could come across as arrogant. One of Pelle’s preferred changing-room jokes is to tell any teammate sharing a mirror with him not to fool themselves that his 'good-looking reflection is their own.

In reality, though, such quips are laced with self-awareness. Pelle knows he is a handsome man but is the first to point out that much of this perception comes down to his tall, 6-foot-4 frame. He is also under no illusions of being a superstar. If he ever were to start getting too big for his boots, his own surname can help bring him back down to earth.

“I was in Dubai with a friend and I booked a bed on a private beach,” he recently recalled. “I get there and I tell the waiter who I am. This poor guy had prepared everything in a fantastic way, sure he was going to meet [the former Brazil star] Pele. He looks at me and asks, all concerned, ‘But where is he?’ My friend points at me, but the waiter keeps on asking: ‘Where’s Pele?’ All I could do was apologise.”

Back in Italy, Pelle is rapidly losing his anonymity, but you get the impression he will deal with it better than most. Arriving so late in the national team set-up, he can look upon each cap as an adventure to enjoy rather than a test which needs to be passed. He knows he will never be Pele. He might, nevertheless, be exactly what Italy need.

INTERNATIONAL ROUND-UP: Davis closes in on Euro 2016

Expand article…

SAINTS midfielder Steven Davis captained Northern Ireland as they took a major stride towards Euro 2016 with a 3-1 win away to the Faroe Islands.

Two goals from Gareth McAuley and a third from Kyle Lafferty moved the Irish to the top of Group F, and they can now book a place at next summer’s finals in France with a win at home to Hungary on Monday.

Elsewhere, Shane Long’s hopes of reaching the Euros with the Republic of Ireland also improved, as they took advantage of Scotland’s 1-0 defeat away to Georgia by winning 4-0 in Gibraltar to move up to third in Group D.

Long came off the bench in the second half to score his country’s fourth of the night.

Dusan Tadic was also in Euro 2016 qualifying action, coming on as a late substitute in Serbia’s 2-0 win at home to Armenia - their first victory of the campaign - as they moved off the bottom of Group I and above their opponents.

Saints captain Jose Fonte came up against his former teammate Morgan Schneiderlin, as Portugal lost 1-0 at home to France in a friendly.

Fonte started on the bench, but came on during the first half, while fellow Saints defender Cedric Soares was brought on for the hosts after the interval.

Schneiderlin came on at the break for France, who won thanks to Mathieu Valbuena’s late free-kick.

Former Chelsea man Romeu believes Saints can succeed despite Liverpool and Man Utd raids

Expand article…

After another exodus of star players this summer that saw Nathaniel Clyne head to Liverpool, Morgan Schneiderlin leave for Manchester United and Toby Alderweireld deciding against making his loan move permanent, Koeman has once again had to work his recruitment magic to bolster the south coast side. But despite their record-breaking season last term, Southampton failed to pick up where they left off, only winning once in their opening four fixtures.

However, former Chelsea midfielder Romeu, who has joined the Saints on a three-year deal, believes the club have a good squad. “I think we have a good squad,” Romeu said. “The last few games we were all new and we have to get to know each other.

“But I think it will be even better in the next games. I’m really looking forward to more games and to keep playing like we did against Norwich City. “Competition is the key to success. The better players you have on your side, they will make you a better player. I’m sure about the quality of the team. “We have a very good squad, very good players and we have to be confident with ourselves to go out and do the job.”

Southampton weigh up Gaston Ramirez options

Expand article…

SAINTS are weighing up their options with Gaston Ramirez after failing to move him on during the transfer window.

The 24-year-old Uruguayan, Saints’ third most expensive ever signing at £12m, is in the final year of his contract at the club.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman has admitted he can see no first-team future for Ramirez at St Mary’s, and was hoping to get him a move away before the close of the transfer window.

However, the deadline passed with Ramirez still a Saints player, and still on the wage bill.

Koeman hinted that Ramirez had a chance to force his way into his plans during pre-season, but grew frustrated at the attacking talent’s continued injury problems, which have blighted his time in England.

Ramirez is now out of the first-team equation and is an expensive man to have around not playing.

The Daily Echo understands that has led the club to consider their options.

The best of those would be to loan him out. There is a possibility that a Championship club could be interested in him, with the Football League loan window opening on Wednesday.

Though they would be unlikely to cover all of his wages, they would pay a small loan fee and at least contribute towards Ramirez, meaning Saints were slightly less out of pocket.

The other option on the table is to terminate his contract and make him a free agent.

That most likely would involve a settlement, and a potentially big expense for Saints, but if he was prepared to negotiate they may be able to come to an agreement that means they don’t pay the full year, and he is then free to move to wherever he wants for nothing.

It is a frustration for Saints that it has come to this with Ramirez, with much hoped for from him when he joined form Bologna in 2012.

However, he has never been able to hold down a regular place in the team, making just 50 appearances in three seasons at the club, one of which saw him loaned out to Hull as they were relegated form the top flight.

As good as Saints have been in the transfer market recently, they are certainly counting the cost of a few dud signings.

Dani Osvaldo cost around £25m in total, Ramirez a £12m fee plus his wages and Emmanuel Mayuka, who has now left for Metz, £3m plus wages.
