Exclusive – Former Bolton striker Kevin Davies announces retirement: ‘It feels like the right time’

Expand article…

Former Bolton captain Kevin Davies announced his retirement from football live on talkSPORT on Friday morning.

The 38-year-old frontman has been without a club since coming to end of his contract at Preston North End at the end of last season.

And, following long consideration over the summer, the striker has confirmed he will bully defences no longer and is hanging up his boots after close to 800 club appearances over 22 seasons as a professional.

“I’m officially retired,” the former Bolton, Preston, Southampton, Blackburn and Chesterfield told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“I’m not playing anywhere at the moment and I’ve spoken to a lot of people about it. It’s a big decision for me and my family, and it just feels like the right time for me.

“It’s going to be strange, having done it for the last 22 years professionally, being in that routine of getting up and training with the boys every day, so I’ll miss that part of it, the competing and the comradery.

“But I’m enjoying the other side of it as well, I’ve done a bit of coaching locally and I’m doing lots of media work at the minute which I’m finding really enjoyable, so I’m feeling ok.”

Davies is a Premier League record breaker, setting a record for the most fouls in a season with 120 in the 2009/10 campaign, before breaking his own tally with 121 in the following season.

He earned one England cap during a prolific spell for Bolton, where he scored over 80 goals in more than 350 games, and the forward admitted he would have loved to have seen more action in a Three Lions shirt, as well as fulfil a boyhood dream by playing for his hometown club.

“One of my biggest regrets is not playing for Sheffield United,” he added.

“I grew up in that area but it was one of those that never quite materialised, sadly.

“I would have also loved to play for England more, to have gone to tournaments and have those experiences - but I could only have done what I did.

“I always gave 100 per cent and tried my best for every club I ever played for, and with most of the clubs I’ve played for we’ve had some success.

“I’ve enjoyed it and it’s been a great journey.”

Former Southampton striker Kevin Davies retires

Expand article…

FORMER Saints striker Kevin Davies has announced his retirement.

The 38-year-old has called a halt to his playing career after 22 seasons as a professional.

Davies had two spells at Saints, first joining the club in 1997 after rising to prominence at Chesterfield.

He scored 12 goals in 30 appearances, before Blackburn paid £7.5m for him in 1998.

After an unsuccessful spell at Ewood Park, Davies made the switch back to The Dell in 1999, going on to score 13 goals in 95 appearances, before joining Bolton in 2003.

Davies, who was capped by England in 2010, announced his decision to retire on his Twitter page.

Southampton’s Davis stands on the cusp of history

Expand article…

STEVEN Davis could take a giant step towards Euro 2016 with Northern Ireland tonight, as they visit the Faroe Islands.

The Irish are currently second in Group F and could move to the brink of qualifying for next summer’s finals in France if they can win this evening.

Michael O’Neill’s team are just one point behind leaders Romania and two ahead of third-placed Hungary - with those two sides playing each other in Budapest tonight.

Northern Ireland, who are captained by Saints midfielder Davis, will host Hungary on Monday night, while they will finish their campaign at home to Greece next month.

If all goes to plan, they will be celebrating qualification for a major tournament for the first time in 30 years.

“If we were to manage to maintain our form and secure qualification, I think it would be the first time in history that a pot-five team has qualified,” O’Neill said.

"That gives you an indication of where this team has come to. The motivation is there because Northern Ireland needs it. Simple as that. Nothing else.

O’Neill added: “The likes of Steven, Aaron Hughes, Chris Baird, just to name three players alone, have served Northern Ireland now for the best part of ten, 15 years. It would be their reward to get to the finals. It’s that type of player and other senior players around them that have put themselves in this position.”

Elsewhere tonight, Shane Long is also in Euro 2016 qualifying action, as Republic of Ireland visit Gibraltar.

The Republic could go third in Group D with a win, but would need Scotland to slip up away to Georgia.

Dusan Tadic is with Serbia for their qualifier at home to Armenia, but, with his country at the foot of Group I, any hopes of the midfielder and his country reaching the finals are long since gone.

Cuco Martina is part of the Curacao squad that are hosting El Salvador in a 2018 World Cup qualifier, while Cedric Soares and Jose Fonte could come up against former Saints midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, as Portugal host France in a friendly.

Southampton’s Van Dijk gets Holland call

Expand article…

SAINTS defender Virgil van Dijk has been called up by Holland for Sunday’s Euro 2016 qualifier away to Turkey.

The 24-year-old, who moved to St Mary’s from Celtic on transfer deadline day, joins the Dutch side after their 1-0 defeat to Iceland last night.

Van Dijk, who is yet to be capped at senior level by the Netherlands, was initially included in the provisional squad, but was upgraded after Bruno Martins Indi was sent off against Iceland, meaning he is now suspended.

Holland are in significant trouble in Group A, with their latest defeat leaving them in third place with three games to go - eight points behind leaders Iceland and six behind Czech Republic, who are second.

INTERNATIONAL ROUND-UP: Pelle scores winner for Italy

Expand article…

GRAZIANO Pelle maintained his goalscoring start to the new season for his country last night.

The Saints striker scored the only goal midway through the second half as Italy moved to the top of Euro 2016 qualifying Group H thanks to a 1-0 victory over Malta, in Florence.

Pelle’s winner enabled Italy to move above Croatia at the top of their pool and edge closer to booking their ticket to the finals in France next summer.

Italy had to wait until the 69th minute when Antonio Candreva’s cross was turned in from close range by Pelle, who appeared to know little about it as the ball went in off his hip.

It was Pelle’s third goal in just five senior appearances for his country.

He also scored the only goal against Malta on his debut last autumn, as well as netting in a 1-1 draw against England in March.

Pelle has already scored four times in eight appearances for Saints this season.

Italy now host fourth-placed Bulgaria, in Palermo, on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Maya Yoshida scored for Japan, as they beat Cambodia 3-0 in a match that doubled as a 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup qualifier.

The Saints centre-half netted the second goal, with a low, angled strike from outside the area five minutes after half-time.

Keisuke Honda had given Japan a first-half lead in Saitama, while Shinji Kagawa completed the scoring with a 61st-minute effort.

Japan, who drew their opening qualifier with Singapore, now travel to Iran, where they will face Afghanistan on Tuesday, in their third qualifying game in Group E.

It was also a memorable day for Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse, who led the England Under-21 team to victory on his first night as captain.

Ward-Prowse and his club teammate Matt Targett both started in the 1-0 friendly win against USA Under-23s, at Preston.

Fellow Saints youngster Jack Stephens also came on as a substitute, to make his debut for the under-21s.

England’s winner came in the 72nd minute, courtesy of James Wilson.

Ward-Prowse said: “It’s very pleasing. It’s always very difficult when a new squad comes together and you only have a few days to achieve the bond.

“But you could see the quality tonight, we played well and although we’ve only been together for a few days, you could see how well we worked together.”

England now open their qualifying campaign for the 2017 Euros with a game away to Norway, on Monday.

Ex-England striker Davies retires

Expand article…

Former Bolton, Preston and England striker Kevin Davies has announced his retirement from football.

The 38-year-old, who scored 150 goals in 820 career appearances, left Preston at the end of last season after helping them win promotion to the Championship.

Davies made his only England appearance in a 0-0 draw against Montenegro at Wembley in 2010 at the age of 33.

“I could probably physically do another season but I just feel it’s the right time,” he told BBC Radio 5 live.

“I’ll look back with immense pride for the last 22 years.”

Davies began his professional career at Chesterfield before moving to Southampton, where his nine goals in a season caused Blackburn to pay a club-record fee of £7.5m for the forward.

But he only scored once for the Lancashire side and, after three years back with the Saints, joined Bolton in 2003 where he spent 10 years, winning the player of the year three times and making 407 appearances.

He left in 2013, and spent two seasons at Preston before leaving Deepdale at the end of the season.

“It was disappointing what happened at Preston, I was talking about doing a new contract there and coaching and playing on for another year in the Championship and that didn’t quite materialise - it did knock the stuffing out of me a little bit,” he said.

"But I’ve had that in my career before with Bolton, Southampton and even Sheffield United when I got rejected at the age of 15.

“I kept bouncing back, but I just felt this time I couldn’t quite get to that stage again.”

At 33 years and 200 days old, Davies became the oldest England debutant since the 38-year-old Leslie Compton in 1950 when he faced Montenegro, and he says it was the high point of his career.

“I’d been in so many of those long squads and on stand-by I never thought it would quite come,” he said.

"To get the call at 33, it was just an amazing week for myself. I just loved every minute, travelling down, the training and getting onto the pitch.

“It wasn’t a great game, to get on the pitch and represent my country was the pinnacle.”

Kevin Davies calls time on 22-season career in professional football

Expand article…

Striker Kevin Davies has announced his retirement from football after a career spanning 22 seasons and bringing him 150 goals in 820 appearances.

Davies, 38, who helped Preston to promotion to the Championship last season, also won an England cap.

He began his career at Chesterfield before moving to Southampton, from whom he joined Blackburn in a £7.5 million deal.

But after the move to Rovers failed to work out – he scored only one league goal – he returned to the Saints before enjoying a successful spell at Bolton.

Davies won his sole England cap at the age of 33, when he played in a 0-0 draw against Montenegro at Wembley in 2010.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I could probably physically do another season, but I just feel it’s the right time.

“I’ll look back with immense pride at the last 22 years.”

He said he had hoped to stay at Preston and “was talking about doing a new contract there and coaching and playing on for another year in the Championship, but that didn’t quite materialise.”

He added that earlier in his career “I kept bouncing back, but I just felt this time I couldn’t quite get to that stage again.”

When Davies won his England cap he became the oldest player to make his debut for them since Leslie Compton, who did so at the age of 38 in 1950.

He recalled: "I’d been in so many of those long squads and on standby that I never thought it would quite come.

"To get the call at 33, it was just an amazing week. I just loved every minute.

“It wasn’t a great game, but to get on the pitch and represent my country was the pinnacle.”
