Report: Hull City 2-1 Saints

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin’s eighth goal of the season handed Saints an early advantage, as he netted from the penalty spot.

But, despite dominating proceedings, two goals in three minutes saw Hull take the lead, as substitute Robert Snodgrass and Michael Dawson netted just after the hour.

The visitors pressed for an equaliser late on, but they found no way through, as Hull ended their wait for a win in the Premier League.

Claude Puel made five changes from Thursday night’s win against Internazionale, as José Fonte, Ryan Bertrand, Steven Davis, Jordy Clasie and Austin all started.

The rotation meant Maya Yoshida lined up at right-back, and it was he who won the penalty for Saints to open the scoring inside the opening six minutes.

The Japanese international was brought down by Curtis Davies after collecting a pass from Dušan Tadić, and Austin stepped up to confidently convert from the penalty spot.

The hosts, on a run of six straight league losses, were then rocked by two injuries to their strikers, as both Will Keane and Abel Hernandez had to make way.

After a long period with very few chances, Saints went close on three occasions before half time, as Clasie, twice, and Austin had opportunities.

Hull stopper David Marshall was equal to the trio of efforts, as Hull survived to ensure they trailed by the solitary goal at the break.

Saints continued to dominate at the start of the second half, with Virgil van Dijk going close to a second in as many games. The defender met Davis’s corner ahead of Marshall, but headed narrowly over.

Despite their dominance, Saints were soon chasing the game, as Hull netted twice inside three minutes. The first arrived just after the hour, as Snodgrass fired in from Sam Clucas’s low ball into the box.

Moments later, Hull were ahead, as a Snodgrass delivery was flicked on by Dawson into the back of the net, with Forster unable to keep it out.

Saints could hardly believe it, but they almost levelled soon after, as Austin found space just outside the penalty area, but he was denied by a smart save from Marshall.

Austin and Yoshida both went close late on, but Saints were somehow left to wonder how they were leaving the game with nothing.

Hull City 2-1 Southampton: Lessons learned for Saints

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says Saints have learned some valuable lessons after their victory over Inter Milan was followed up by defeat at Premier League strugglers Hull.

Just days after warning that the emotion of the historic victory over Inter at St Mary’s could negatively impact the performance at Hull, Saints were defeated 2-1.

They took an early lead through Charlie Austin and dominated the game.

However, they failed to kill Hull off and conceded two sloppy goals in as many minutes in the second half and came away from the KCOM Stadium defeated.

Puel said: “I think like the first half was a strange first half because with the opponent’s injuries and with the stops we lost a little the rhythm of the game, and we lost I think the good concertation.

“Congratulations (to Hull). This is a time for this team in difficulties in the first half and to believe all the time in 90 minutes but I think we are responsible to let them come back in this game.

“We can do better and I think it is a good lesson for us for the future because we have the control of the game and we make concertation and after it was difficult to score. We have many chances after without a good result, a good clinical.

“It is difficult to accept this loss because after Inter Milan we can do better and I said to play this game just after a European game is always difficult and it is always a strong challenge to play every three days.

“It is not only to keep a good physical level but to keep every time a good attitude, strong in the control of the game.

“The scenario was interesting at the beginning of the game and it was important when we dominated the game to score another goal and to control better the game.

“We left for the opponent to get back into the game.”

Puel now has to mull over the defeat during the international break, during which many of his star names will go off to play for their countries.

The Saints boss admitted he doesn’t expect to sleep much while he digests the defeat to Hull and insists they do have themselves partly to blame.

“I think we sleep a little today and it’s difficult to accept this because we can have all the emotion and today after this game we are very responsible for this and we have taken a good lesson for the future.”

Claude Puel says Southampton must learn from Hull City defeat

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel said his players must learn after throwing away a lead to lose 2-1 to struggling Hull City at the KCOM Stadium on Sunday.

The Saints were seemingly cruising towards all three points after going into half-time with a 1-0 lead thanks to Charlie Austin’s sixth-minute penalty.

However, they left the north east empty handed after conceding two goals in the space of just 125 seconds in the second half, with Puel keen for his side not to make the same mistakes again going forward.

“I think we had this game in control,” said the Frenchman. "In the second half we let this team believe a comeback was possible. All together it is impossible, but I think it is a good lesson for the future, because it is difficult today to leave without three points.

“But congratulations to his [Mike Phelan’s] team as they believe all the time. It was a strange game, a strange first half because with the injuries of the opponent,” Puel added in reference to the two first-half injuries Hull suffered which appeared to galvanise the hosts.

"It would be interesting to keep a good concentration in this situation. Two free kicks, it is not normal for you, but I hope this situation in this game is important for the future and we have taken a good lesson.

"I just look at my team and they can do better, the concentration, the quality and the rhythm of the game, it is important for the future. We dominated the game and had control, so it is important to score another goal and to keep the ball and have control of the game.

“And in the second half we have many chances, of course, but I think we are all responsible for this game and I think it is important to take this game as a lesson for the future.”

Injuries take shine off long-awaited win for Hull boss Mike Phelan

Show/hide article…

Hull boss Mike Phelan breathed a sigh of relief after his side finally stopped the rot against Southampton before reporting more bad injury news.

The Tigers registered their first Premier League win since August as they stopped a six-game losing streak as goals from Robert Snodgrass and Michael Dawson in the space of two second-half minutes overturned Charlie Austin’s early penalty for Saints.

But the shine was taken off the 2-1 victory by injuries suffered by strikers Abel Hernandez and Will Keane, who both hobbled off in the first 25 minutes and look set for a spell on the sidelines.

Nevertheless, Phelan was delighted his side signed off for the international break by ending their drought.

He said: 'There’s a bit of everything, relief and happiness and concern at the injuries.

'It’s a time to enjoy the moment over the next few days and we will kick on again next Monday when everyone comes back.

‘There was a sense of deja vu when we went a goal down early on, but losing the two players like we did forced our hand. It was an all round good performance.’

Hull’s season so far has been blighted by injuries and the news on Hernandez and Keane is not good.

‘They are going to be looked at tomorrow, medically the signs aren’t very good,’ Phelan added. 'Keane is the worst of the two and they are both going to be out for some time. Keane is knee and Hernandez is groin.

‘It’s a case of wait and see, it doesn’t look good. I’ll leave that to the medical team and wait for the phone call tomorrow. They are crazy injuries, there is no reason why, it’s just the wrong place at the wrong time.’

Southampton boss Claude Puel was left scratching his head at how his side are returning home pointless.

They were in total control up until Hull’s double salvo and then had a string of chances to rescue a point, three of them falling to Austin, who had earlier bagged his fifth goal in seven Premier League games.

And the Frenchman, who saw his side beat Inter Milan in the Europa League on Thursday, says his team can learn from the experience.

‘We can do better, this is a good lesson for us for the future because we had control of the game,’ Puel said.

'We lacked concentration and afterwards it was difficult to score. We had chances after that but we weren’t clinical. It’s difficult to accept how we lost this game.

'It is always a strong challenge to play every three days. Every game is a strong physical challenge, it’s also difficult to keep a good attitude.

'We dominated the game and controlled it. When you win a game like Inter Milan, when you come back to the Premier League to play a team who plays one game a week it is difficult. I think we will learn for the future. Every game in the Premier League is difficult.

Hull 2 Southampton 1: Snodgrass and Dawson give hosts first win since August

Show/hide article…

And this was just as unlikely as that opening day triumph over Leicester. For almost an hour today, the toothless Tigers looked in as bad a state on the pitch as the club is off it. Thousands of empty seats inside the KCom provided a fitting backdrop for a side seemingly drifting towards relegation and those that bothered turning up spent much of their time protesting against owner Assem Allam. Even luck had conspired against Hull for within 20 minutes, they had lost both their forwards. Abel Hernandez hobbled off with a groin injury before Will Keane joined him on the sidelines after landing awkwardly.

“Hull beat Southampton in the Premier League after two quick goals from Robert Snodgrass and Michael Dawson” The former Manchester United youngster faces a lengthy spell out with knee ligament damage. Their first chance did not arrive until the 61st minute when Harry Maguire fired across the face of goal. Then the corpse stirred with two goals in quick succession to set up Hull’s first Sunday win in the Premier League in 10 attempts. No one saw this extraordinary turnaround coming as Southampton toyed with them, hardly believing their opponents were capable of cancelling out Charlie Austin’s third minute penalty, let alone leave them pointless. But Mike Phelan had spotted flickers of a revival in last week’s narrow loss at Watford and while much is still wrong with Hull, the collective attitude of his players is not one of those problems.

The 17,768 crowd, Hull’s lowest-ever at this level, may have been reconciling themselves to yet another defeat but not those in amber and black. Moments after Maguire’s miss, Sam Clucas squared the ball for sub Robert Snodgrass to pull the trigger and find the net with a rasping left foot finish. Then in the 63rd minute, Snodgrass turned provider with Michael Dawson meeting his free-kick with a glancing header past Fraser Forster. Phelan admitted that he’d have gladly taken a point at the interval but said: “We have had some soul-destroying defeats but this group has a real inner-belief. “I’ve got a mixture of emotions right now – relief, happiness, concern with those injuries – but this is a time to enjoy the moment. “It was an all-round hard fight and at half-time, I had to have words with them because we’d been under the cosh but I thought after our second goal, we grew in stature in the way we repelled everything that came our way.”

Southampton were stunned by Hull’s quickfire double but were their own worst enemy. They spent most of the game in cruise control after Austin had fired them ahead from 12 yards following Curtis Davies’ rash challenge on Mata Yoshida. They laid siege to the Hull goal with David Marshall twice pulling off fine saves to deny Austin and Clucas clearing a Yoshida effort off the line in the dying seconds. For the Saints, this was an unexpected comedown after the high of beating Inter Milan in the Europa League. But they were left to rue their own lack of a cutting edge and learn the painful lesson that even near-total domination offers no guarantees. “We controlled the game but weren’t clinical,” said manager Claude Puel.

England boss Gareth Southgate announces squad to face Scotland and Spain

Jack Wilshere has been recalled to the England squad by Gareth Southgate

And, as revealed in Friday’s Daily Star, Burnley centreback Michael Keane, has kept his place in Gareth Southgate’s selection.

Southgate named a 25-man squad for Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland and a friendly with Spain four days later, both at Wembley.

Wilshere did not feature in the interim Three Lions’ manager’s pick for the qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia last month.

But the 24-year-old is back in after moving to the south coast club on loan to rebuild his career, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger saying he could not guarantee him first-team football.

Forster and Bertrand get England call

Show/hide article…

Southampton pair Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand have been named in the latest England squad ahead of their game against Scotland next week.

The Three Lions continue their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying group with a match against the Scots on Friday at Wembley Stadium, before a friendly against Spain on Tuesday 15th November (8pm GMT).

Forster and Bertrand are both named in the initial squad for the game as the hosts will look to extend their lead at the top of Group F.

England have taken seven points from their opening three matches, most recently playing out a goalless draw with Slovenia in Ljubliana where Forster was on the bench.

The Saints stopper has six senior England appearances to his name, while Bertrand has ten senior caps and they will hope to build on that in the game against Scotland which gets under way at 7.45pm GMT.

Puel: Performance was uncharacteristic

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says he has seen many encouraging things from his Southampton team in their first few months of the season, but insisted that did not excuse the performance at Hull City.

Saints were beaten 2-1 at KCOM Stadium, as a second-half turnaround from the hosts saw them overcome Charlie Austin’s early penalty kick.

Puel explained that the performance his side produced was not a characteristic one.

“We can do many good things. We can show very good football, good intensity and good quality,” he said. "After all these games, we don’t have all the points that I think we deserve. This for me is the truth, but I’m not satisfied with this game.

"We have lost different points after very good games at home or away, against great teams, but this for me was different. We must do better to control this game and to take the good points.

"We have a young team. It is the first time this season that all the squad can play every three days. It’s very difficult, with international games also, because we have many, many international players. It’s a good thing, but they don’t recover.

“But it’s important to learn and I think we learned a game is never finished and it’s important to keep all the time the good concentration and to give the good answer. I think we lacked the good concentration for this game and it’s a pity. We are angry.”

Saints pair Forster and Bertrand named in England squad

Show/hide article…

SAINTS pair Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand have been included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the forthcoming games against Scotland and Spain.

Bournemouth loanee Jack Wilshere has also been recalled to the squad, along with striker Harry Kane.

Wilshere has been a conspicuous absentee from international get-togethers since Euro 2016, with the departed Sam Allardyce and his temporary replacement both leaving him out.

But a loan move from Arsenal to Bournemouth has given the 24-year-old some much-needed game time and he has rebuilt both form and fitness under Eddie Howe.

Dele Alli’s twisted knee has also created a vacancy in midfield, with Wilshere operating in a similar position for the Cherries.

While Alli has been forced out, his Tottenham team-mate Kane rejoins the group after missing Southgate’s previous matches in charge against Malta and Slovenia.

Kane has missed seven weeks with an ankle injury but started the north London derby against Arsenal today and scored from the penalty spot to secure a 1-1 draw.

Manchester United pair Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw are not involved in a 25-man squad after being declared unfit for the 3-1 win over Swansea - a decision that seemed to frustrate their club boss Jose Mourinho.

With Smalling missing, Burnley’s Michael Keane edges Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson - the former having received his first call-up as injury cover for last month’s games.
