Saints trio get nod to star for England Under-21s at St Mary’s

THREE Saints players have been named in the England under-21 squad for next week’s glamour friendly with Italy at St Mary’s.
Captain James Ward-Prowse and winger Nathan Redmond - regular starters in the past few years - are joined in interim manager Aidy Boothroyd’s squad by defender Jack Stephens.
Stephens, usually a centre half, recently made his first senior Saints appearance for over four and a half years - playing at right back in the 1-0 League Cup win against Sunderland.
Stephens has won two England under-21 caps - both against Bosnia in the 2017 European Championship qualifiers. After making his debut in Bosnia in November 2015 - where he was sent off - he appeared again against the same opponents at Walsall last month.
Bothroyd has called up Harry Winks and Alfie Mawson for the first time, with England due to play Italy at St Mary’s next Thursday and then France in Bondoufle four days later.
Tottenham midfielder Winks has made seven appearances this season and Swansea defender Mawson joined from Barnsley for £5.5million in the summer and has played twice.
Ex-Saint Calum Chambers, currently on loan at Middlesbrough from Arsenal, is also in the squad.
The draw for Euro 2017 takes place on December 1 and Boothroyd, who replaced Southgate when he took the senior side after Sam Allardyce’s exit in September, is already making plans.
He said: "As soon as the final whistle went against Bosnia in Walsall last month we were already thinking about the preparations for next summer and trying to make sure we finish off the year with two more good performances.
“This is what we want, to test ourselves against these sort of nations.”
