Puel’s Inter dilemma

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel is wrestling with some huge selection dilemmas ahead of tomorrow’s crunch clash with crisis club Inter Milan.

Inter yesterday dramatically sacked boss Frank de Boer, just two days before the three times European champions step out at St Mary’s for a critical Europa League group tie.

Inter have lost five of their last seven games, though they did manage to beat Saints 1-0 in the Europa League in the San Siro almost a fortnight ago.

That result dumped Saints off top spot in the group at the halfway mark - adding an extra layer of importance to tomorrow’s return on the south coast.

Puel must now decide whether to unleash all his star names on Inter, knowing Saints can hardly afford another defeat if they are serious about progressing to the knockout stages.

As part of his phenomenal tinkering in recent weeks due to Saints’ hectic schedule, Puel left Charlie Austin, Jose Fonte, Steven Davis and Ryan Bertrand behind when travelling to Israel for a Europa League tie with Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

And he didn’t start Austin, Fonte, Davis or Nathan Redmond in the side which paid the penalty for missed chances at the San Siro.

Now the boss has a number of vital selection decisions to make tomorrow.

Does he keep Ryan Bertrand at left back, as the England international only returned from a fortnight’s injury absence last Sunday?

If he doesn’t, young Sam McQueen will make only his fourth start - two of which would have been against one of the most famous names in European football.

Does he give Fonte his first Europa League start of the season? Previously, Maya Yoshida - who has not played in the Premier League since the opening day in early August - has appeared alongside Virgil van Dijk in all three group games.

Does he bring James Ward-Prowse into the starting XI, as the England under-21 captain has started all three of the Europa League ties so far and was one of the brighter lights at the San Siro?

Does he recall Danish midfielder Pierre Hojbjerg, who has started two of the three Europa League ties but who, like Ward-Prowse, was on the bench against Chelsea last Sunday?

Ward Prowse and Hojbjerg started in Milan, but Steven Davis and Jordy Clasie occupied their places in the 2-0 loss to Chelsea.

Does he bring record signing Soufiane Boufal into the side for what would be only the playmaker’s second competitive start since last April?

And if he does, where does he start the Moroccan international who last week marked his first Saints start with a wonder goal in the League Cup win against Sunderland?

Austin, who scored twice on his only Europa League start against Sparta Prague, should be a shoe-in to start this time.

Puel preferred Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez in his starting XI at the San Siro, but both are currently injured - and Saints do not have many other options up front.

The Frenchman has selected previous Europa League teams with one eye on the following Sunday’s Premier League games.

After Hapoel, Saints played away at defending champions Leicester.

After Inter, they had a trip to table- topping Manchester City.

This Sunday, they are on their travels again - this time to Hull City.

With respect to the Tigers, who have lost their last six league games, they are not in the same class.

Puel could always throw the likes of Yoshida and McQueen into his starting line-up on Humberside if he truly feels some players cannot appear in two games in four days.

Hojbjerg rallies Southampton fans ahead of Inter visit

Show/hide article…

Southampton, who have a win, a draw and a defeat in the competition so far, are third in their group, tied on points with second-placed Hapoel Beer-Sheva and two points behind leaders AC Sparta Praha.

Inter, currently without a manager following the sacking of Frank de Boer just two days before their trip to England, have one point fewer than Southampton but have inflicted the Saints’ only defeat in the competition so far this season.

“It’s a crucial game,” said Hojbjerg, whose team’s last appearance in the tournament came in 2003-04.

"If we win this game I think it looks very good ahead of the knockout stages. If we lose the game, we suddenly can be one step behind, and with only two games left then there is a lot to catch and that can be difficult.

“So it’s really important to get a good start to the game, to get a good feeling and atmosphere. The fans have to be there, and I really look forward to it.”

Hojbjerg, who joined Southampton from Bayern Munich in the close season, pointed out how the fans had spurred the team on during their narrow 1-0 defeat by Inter at the San Siro last month.

“I must say, I have been at some clubs and I think I have never experienced something like that, and to be that loud doesn’t happen a lot,” he told the club website. (www.southamptonfc.com)

“The players can feel it, and the players will try to put all their energy into the game… and we will maybe make history and go through to the knockout stages.”

Boufal is clearly Southampton’s goal of the month winner

Show/hide article…

Fans usually can’t wait to start voting for their club’s “Goal of the month” contest but for Southampton supporters, October’s award was declared a walkover.

In what was a dull EFL Cup affair between the Saints and David Moyes’ struggling Sunderland outfit, Moroccan international Sofiane Boufal stepped up with a 66th minute winner.

The former Lille man cut in from the left before unleashing a blinder beyond Jordan Pickford’s reach to give Southampton a 1-0 victory.

Fans must have replayed that “Goal of the month” video countless times, as Southampton seemingly decided to nominate Boufal’s wonder strike as the one and only contender.

So congratulations Boufal, and here’s to more great goals for Southampton fans to celebrate in November!

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg urges Saints fans to create memorable atmosphere

Show/hide article…

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has asked Southampton supporters to be as loud as they can at St Mary’s when they host Inter Milan in the Europa League.

Saints are second in Group K and could go top if they beat Inter on Thursday night.

They have lost only once in the competition and that was a 1-0 defeat away to the managerless Italian side.

And Hojbjerg, who has made 14 appearances since signing for Claude Puel’s side from Bayern Munich for £12million in the summer, praised the efforts of the 6,715 fans who travelled to Italy and believes they could play a very important part again.

‘We saw in San Siro – we had the feeling that we played at home, how they came, how they supported us and how they always stood behind us,’ he told the club’s official website.

'I must say, I have been at some clubs and I think I have never experienced something like that, and to be that loud doesn’t happen a lot, and that shows love and passion for the club, and that shows real history.

‘The players can feel it, and the players will try to put all their energy into the game and try to get the best possible result, because it’s in all of our favours that we get the best possible result, and we will maybe make history and go through to the knockout stages.’

A win for Puel’s men would give them a very strong chance of qualifying for the knockout stages for the first time since 2004.

Hojbjerg understands how important qualification would mean for the club and how much of a part the game against Inter could play.

He added: ‘Of course, it’s a crucial game,’ he said. 'If we win this game I think it looks very good ahead of the knockout stages.

'If we lose the game, we suddenly can be one step behind, and with only two games left then there is a lot to catch and that can be difficult.

‘So it’s really important to get a good start to the game, to get a good feeling and atmosphere. The fans have to be there, and I really look forward to it.’

Shane Long ruled out of Republic of Ireland’s match in Austria

Show/hide article…

Southampton striker Shane Long has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier in Austria on 12 November.

Long, 29, injured a hamstring during last week’s Europa League defeat away to Inter Milan.

His absence is a big blow to Martin O’Neill as the Republic aim to build on their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Two of Dundalk’s Europa League heroes - Daryl Horgan and Andy Boyle - are in the provisional 35-man squad.

The Republic are second in Group D, level on seven points with leaders Serbia.

Long scored the first goal in the 3-1 win away to Moldova, which followed an opening draw in Serbia and home victory over Georgia.

Manager O’Neill said Everton midfielder was an injury doubt for the match in Vienna because of a hamstring problem.

Last month, Everton boss Ronald Koeman criticised the Irish manager for starting the 25-year-old Glasgow-born player for two qualifiers in four days.

Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter, aiming for his first competitive start, is back in the Republic squad.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg says Southampton fans will be vital against Inter Milan

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg says Southampton fans will be vital against Inter Milan

Midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has urged Southampton fans to get the team through their Europa League match against Inter Milan.

Victory on Thursday night at St Mary’s would put the Premier League club in good position to progress to the knockout stages.

Southampton, who have a win, a draw and a defeat in the competition so far, are third in their group, tied on points with second-placed Hapoel Beer-Sheva and two points behind leaders Sparta Prague.

Inter, currently without a manager following the sacking of Frank de Boer just two days before their trip to England, have one point fewer than Southampton but have inflicted the Saints’ only defeat in the competition so far this season.

“It’s a crucial game,” said Hojbjerg. "If we win this game I think it looks very good ahead of the knockout stages.

"If we lose the game, we suddenly can be one step behind, and with only two games left then there is a lot to catch and that can be difficult.

“So it’s really important to get a good start to the game, to get a good feeling and atmosphere. The fans have to be there, and I really look forward to it.”

Hojbjerg, who joined Southampton from Bayern Munich in the close season, pointed out how the thousands of travelling fans had spurred the team on during their narrow 1-0 defeat by Inter at the San Siro last month.

"I must say, I have been at some clubs and I think I have never experienced something like that, and to be that loud doesn’t happen a lot.

“The players can feel it, and the players will try to put all their energy into the game… and we will maybe make history and go through to the knockout stages.”
