Watch highlights of Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Southampton

Show/hide article…

Eden Hazard and Diego Costa shot down Southampton 2-0 to keep Chelsea on the shoulder of the Premier League pace-setters.

Convincing wins for Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool 24 hours earlier put the pressure on Antonio Conte’s men as they faced a Saints side unbeaten in five matches.

But, inspired by Hazard, they responded with a comfortable victory to stay a point behind the top three and register a fourth straight league win for the first time since April 2015, when they were coasting towards the title.

Hazard netted for the third league game in succession before Costa curled home a sumptuous second to end Southampton’s eight-month unbeaten run at home.

Hazard has now scored more goals (5) in this Premier League season than the last campaign (4), while Costa is now the leading goalscorer in the league with eight goals.

Ominously for their rivals, they have scored 11 goals in those four games and conceded none, with their three-man defence holding firm once again without captain John Terry.

Antonio Conte: Chelsea can be Premier League champions

Show/hide article…

The in-form Blues moved to within a point of the summit following their fourth successive league win. In the build-up to yesterday’s trip to the south coast, Conte claimed it was too early to discuss a championship bid. But after Eden Hazard and Diego Costa struck, the Chelsea chief said: “If you ask me if I have confidence, then yes. “We know the road if very long but it is important to work hard and confidence is increasing. To stay that close to the title and first place is good and gives us great confidence.

“We knew this was a big test against a good team who are very strong” “We have to work very hard but we must improve. Then after the first part of the season I can say more about this. “It is more important for the players to concentrate on themselves than look at the league table at this moment. “We knew this was a big test against a good team who are very strong. I am very happy because I saw great commitment and great work rate from all the players. “That is the right way to have great satisfaction. Now this game is in the past and we must concentrate on the next matches.”

Conte hailed star man Eden Hazard after taking his season’s goal tally to five - more than he managed in the whole of the last woeful campaign. He said: “Eden’s work rate was fantastic. When you see Eden, Pedro and Diego Costa working hard you are happy. “Eden and Costa scored and we could have had more goals because we created many good chances.” Chelsea have gone six hours without conceding and Saints boss Claude Puel had no complaints following the home loss.

Puel said: “Chelsea are the best team we have played this year and it was difficult to find a solution against them. “It is disappointing because we conceded a goal after a few minutes and this is very difficult against Chelsea. “We could have done better on the first goal and after that Chelsea defended well and played on the counter attack “We were not clinical enough. It is a pity for my players because we tried to play good football.”

Depay, Giroud and Fabregas among the Prem’s 20 slowest players this season

Show/hide article…

PACE is crucial in football, but some top players can get by without it. Here are the 20 players who have clocked the lowest top speeds so far this season.

The Premier League is full of speed demons like Raheem Sterling, Eden Hazard and Marcus Rashford - but some players just don’t have the pace.

The above list is made of the 20 players who had clocked the lowest top speeds so far this season, prior to the 10th round of fixtures.

Puel given little help from Hazard

Show/hide article…

Eden Hazard showed little gratitude to Claude Puel as he tormented Saints to help Chelsea to a 2-0 win at St Mary’s.

Puel brought Hazard into the first team and took him under his wing at Lille when the Belgian was just 16-years-old.

Hazard has never forgotten Puel’s impact on his career, but certainly put that to one side as he scored after just six minutes at St Mary’s, and then continued to cause havoc to the Saints defence as Chelsea picked up three points.

Puel said: “I spoke with him after the game and he come back perhaps after last season and it was difficult for him but he come back with a very good level.

“He play with this level and it’s difficult of course.

“I think we can do better on this goal but it’s a very good player like Costa and at the beginning for the first half and the beginning of the second half they didn’t have a lot of chances but sufficient for the players.

“Like Eden or Costa it’s difficult to defend of course.

“It’s a disappointment because I think our first half was interesting but not sufficient to score and find the solution.

“It was interesting to experience the quality and it took this goal just about a few minutes and this changes the game, the profile of the game. From then it’s strong work with possibilities on the counter attack and it was easier for them to find solutions.”

Saints have played two of the Premier League’s major title contenders in back-to-back games, but whereas they held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad, they were soundly beaten by Chelsea.

Puel feels there are major differences in the way the two sides play, but still believes a lot came down to his side and their influence on the game.

“It’s a different game of course because Manchester City tried to do good pressing high on the pitch with possession and to find solutions,” he reckoned.

“Chelsea like to stay behind with a strong work in defence, lines closed and try to play counter attack.

“We can see for example against us in the first half good possession for us with good play and we tried to find solutions but it was difficult as they stay with the lines closed.

“When you took a goal after a few minutes this situation confront Chelsea to play their game and it was easier for them.

“I like to have another scenario without that goal at the beginning of the game because I think we can do better but the difference between Chelsea and City is Chelsea have a different way to play.”

THE VERDICT: Outclassed Saints must bounce back for Inter

Show/hide article…

It was a run that had to end at some point. The vital thing for Saints is that they instantly bounce back.

Heading into yesterday’s game against Chelsea it was more than eight months since Saints had last lost at St Mary’s, a run stretching back 13 matches in all competitions.

It underlines just how dominant they have been on their own turf, especially when you consider the quality of some of the opposition they have faced in that time.

If records are there to be broken, then perhaps it was little surprise that it was Chelsea who brought that streak to end, with the Blues having been the last team to win at St Mary’s way back in February.

In fairness they were good value for it.

They were the best team Saints have faced so far this season, with their attacking prowess something to greatly admire.

Their movement, their pace, their ability in the final third was just too much for Saints, who weren’t ever quite sure whether to try and press and close them down or sit off and try to soak it up.

In contrast, Saints were often a little static in their attack and there could be little complaint about the final result.

However, if this was a result that doesn’t really do much in the context of Saints’ season, their next home game, just a few days away against Inter Milan, is far more decisive.

Given the current standings of Group K of the Europa League this is a vital fixture, and Saints need to bounce back to their imperious home form straightaway.

The first half against Chelsea was an entertaining affair between two teams determined to play some decent football.

However, there was little doubt that for all of the good things about Saints’ play, it was Chelsea who looked far more dangerous going forward.

Their array of attacking options, and in particular the superb Eden Hazard, were a constant threat.

Saints started off trying to play diagonal balls to stretch a three man Chelsea defence, but too often it was Charlie Austin chasing them down when he needed to be the one in the middle.

There was an early warning for Saints as Cuco Martina had to make a good block to prevent Diego Costa from finishing at the near post after Hazard’s ball in.

But there was no escape on six minutes as Hazard gave the Blues the lead.

It wasn’t great defending from Saints, but it was a good finish as Victor Moses fed the ball to Hazard on the overlap down the right and the Belgian cut back onto his left foot, leaving Steven Davis on the ground, and drilled a low shot through Fraser Forster and into the far corner.

It could have been worse for Saints at the break were it not for Forster, who saved a well struck but central Hazard effort after he cut across the face of the area from the left and then stopped from Costa when he was one-on-one after Nemanja Matic had stolen the ball from Jordy Clasie and threaded it through.

The best Saints managed was from set-pieces, with Austin heading well wide from Davis’ free kick and Tadic striking a dead ball from 25 yards round the edge of the wall only for Thibaut Courtois to make the stop, with what proved to be their only shot on target.

Chelsea were equally as in control in the second period.

Jose Fonte’s superb sliding block prevented Hazard netting a second before Costa got in on the act.

Saints stood off of the striker, which looked a dangerous policy, and so it proved as from 20 yards he curled a perfectly measured curling shot into the opposite top corner.

Puel brought on Sofiane Boufal, but Saints never looked like getting back into it.

They just could not generate any kind of movement to unsettle Chelsea’s back line.

The nearest they came was another Austin header that went over, David Luiz’s defensive header which looped onto the top of the crossbar, and Austin getting the ball in the net only to be flagged for a marginal offside.

It was Chelsea who could, and probably should, have got the game’s third goal.

Costa fired wide at the near post, Moses saw his shot bounce back off of Forster but Chelsea tried to walk the rebound in and were eventually shut out before two more Forster saves, these from Hazard and Moses.

It’s been rare to see Saints so convincingly outplayed, let alone at St Mary’s, in recent times.

However, given the quality of Chelsea there is little shame in it.

What they must do is leave it behind them quickly, because Thursday night is a truly massive evening for the club in so many ways.

Cuco Martina struggles in Southampton’s loss to Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s five-match unbeaten run in the Premier League came to a disappointing end as Claude Puel’s side slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to in-form Chelsea on Sunday.

Saints never recovered from a nightmare start after allowing Eden Hazard to open the scoring with only six minutes played.

Diego Costa’s long-range curler 10 minutes into the second half ended any hopes Puel’s men had of mounting a fightback.

Steven Davis’ second half header against the top of the crossbar was as close as Southampton came to scoring.

Not many sides in the country would have lived with Chelsea on this form so Southampton did well to restrict the visitors to scoring two goals.

Oriol Romeu continued his impressive form with another solid performance against one of his old clubs.

Southampton have been creating chances for fun of late so it will worry manager Puel they only managed one shot on target in the entire game.

Charlie Austin was isolated up front as Nathan Redmond failed to get involved in the game. Fraser Forster’s handling also looked suspect as the Saints back-line was not as watertight as usual, leaving their goalkeeper exposed at times.

6 – Not many fans would have argued with Puel’s team selection, although why the underwhelming Jordy Clasie is continually preferred to Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg is a mystery.

Puel did nothing to alter the course of proceedings with his substitutions and could not find a way to break Chelsea down after they scored early and were content to sit deep and hit on the break for the remainder of the game.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Fraser Forster, 5 – Will have been disappointed to let Hazard’s early goal go in through his legs and, while Costa’s thunderbolt shot was unstoppable, his handling was not up to its usual high standards.

DF Cuco Martina, 4 – Both of Chelsea’s goals originated down his side of the pitch and the right-back was run ragged by the sensational Hazard. His attempt to stop Costa getting a shot away for his goal was laughable.

DF Jose Fonte, 6 – Like many of his teammates, Fonte struggled to get to grips with Chelsea’s all-action front trio of Costa, Hazard and Pedro.

DF Virgil van Dijk, 6 – Not at his best up against the man-mountain Costa. Looked a little tired after playing the bulk of Southampton’s Premier League and Europa League matches this season.

DF Ryan Bertrand, 6 – A welcome return to the fold after injury for the England international, but Bertrand found it tough going against his former employers. One brilliant second half cross headed over by Austin was the highpoint of his afternoon.

MF Oriol Romeu, 7 – Wanted to show Chelsea what they were missing, and while the Spaniard was unable to change the game in Saints’ favour he was still their standout performer.

MF Jordy Clasie, 5 – Moment he was disposed cheaply by Nemanja Matic at the end of the first half leading to a Chelsea chance was in keeping with another disappointing display from the out-of-form Dutchman.

MF Steven Davis, 6 – Did not do enough to stop Hazard for the opening goal but the Northern Irishman kept his chin up and grafted away in the middle of the park.

MF Dusan Tadic, 5 – The Serbian has been in superb form this season but did not see enough of the ball to worry a stubborn and efficient Chelsea defence.

FW Charlie Austin, 6 – Southampton’s top-scorer was starved of service and rarely looked likely to add to his goal haul. When he did get the ball in the net late on, the assistant referee correctly spotted he had strayed offside, summing up Austin’s frustration.

FW Nathan Redmond, 5 – Redmond spoke about wanting to emulate Hazard prior to the game but, on this display, is a long way short of achieving that lofty ambition. Invisible throughout.

MF Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, NR – Southampton fans want to see the former Bayern Munich man given a regular run in the team.

MF Soufiane Boufal, 5 – Could not emulate the sensational start he made to his Southampton career when scoring a wonder-goal vs. Sunderland in the EFL Cup in midweek.

MF Sam McQueen, NR – Unlucky to lose his place to the fit-again Bertrand after impressing in the former Chelsea man’s absence but may have to get used to life on the bench now Bertrand is fit.

Premier League hotlist: Sergio Aguero, Tom Heaton and Philippe Coutinho feature

Show/hide article…

Who were the best Premier League players from the weekend games? We take a look at the Man of the Match performances in our hotlist.

Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool all hit four past their respective opponents with only goal difference separating them at the top of the table, while Manchester United were held to a goalless draw with Burnley.

But which players starred in particular? Read on to remind yourself of the standout displays - and let us know who you think deserves the plaudits by leaving a comment or tweeting us @SkyFootball

Alexis Sanchez was a constant menace to the Sunderland defence from the first whistle to the last. Straight away he put goalkeeper Jordan Pickford under pressure, closing down his nervy clearance, and he was involved all the way up to opening the scoring when his movement got him ahead of Lamine Kone to head Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross into the back of the net.

The Chile international should have also won a penalty in the 62nd minute after being brought down by Kone, but he eventually got the second goal his performance deserved, finishing from close range after Gibbs’ shot rebounded off the post.

It was his 50th Gunners goal and his eighth of the season in all competitions with Arsene Wenger and the fans hoping he can continue to put in performances like this one. If he does, Arsenal could go very close to landing the title.

Manchester United amazingly had 37 shots in their goalless draw with Burnley and Tom Heaton made 11 saves - he was a man mountain between the sticks.

The England international - as well as being confident and assured with dealing with United’s 17 corners - made his mark with some outstanding shot-stopping exploits.

Perhaps the pick of his saves came on the hour mark. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had already been denied from close range by Heaton, flew through the air to connect with a cross from the right but his scissor-kick was bravely blocked away by a starfish-like Heaton, who said after the game the power of the strike nearly broke his arm. It was a save that former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel called the best in the history of the Premier League.

Middlesbrough are going to need moments of inspiration if they are to survive in the Premier League this season, and that’s exactly what Gaston Ramirez provided to put them on the way to the 2-0 win over Bournemouth.

Ramirez’s skill to burst into space on halfway was impressive enough, as was his pace to pull clear of the struggling Jack Wilshere, but the most impressive part of the Uruguayan’s goal was that he kept his cool to delay his shot and swerve inside the covering defenders before dispatching the finish.

He’s often deemed a frustratingly inconsistent player, but that shouldn’t take away from what was one of the best goals of the season so far.

On a day when not many attacking players shone at White Hart Lane, Spurs full-back Danny Rose was one of the brightest lights. Not only did he largely keep Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez quiet, but he got forward down the flank and provided an outlet for the hosts.

The winger was a constant threat for Watford down the right, getting the better of Hull defender Sam Clucas time and again.

It’s difficult to sing his praises too highly as the final ball was often lacking, but he never shied away from his attack-minded approach, and he wisely played it back to Daryl Janmaat late on, which led to the winner thanks to Michael Dawson’s own goal.

Sergio Aguero scored his first goals since his team last won at Swansea more than a month ago, and he inspired a very comfortable victory which ended the worst run of results in Pep Guardiola’s managerial career.

The Argentina international’s opener was a terrific finish which he made look easy from Ilkay Gundogan’s through ball and his second was emphatic as he fired high into Ben Foster’s top corner.

He then used wonderful vision and skill to set up Gundogan for the third and it’s clear than when he is on song, City become a much harder team to stop.

Liverpool continue to show their attacking prowess as they expertly dismissed Crystal Palace 4-2 on Saturday evening, with Philippe Coutinho once again the star of the show.

He was a constant menace for a shaky Eagles defence, and his corners twice provided assists for the goals of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip. He could have added his own name to the scoresheet but was only kept out by an ultimately solid performance from Palace goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

The Reds’ front three continue to be one of the most potent and versatile in the Premier League this season, and Saturday’s performance from Coutinho in particular - his crossing and passing inch perfect - demonstrates why he is at the heart of the action this season.

Ross Barkley has come in for criticism at times this season but this was the midfielder back to somewhere near his best.

After being denied a first-half goal by a brilliant save by Adrian, he managed to net for the first time in the league since the opening day when he finished from Romelu Lukaku’s cross. He was regularly involved and made three key passes - as many as any other player in the match.

Eden Hazard dazzled again in Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation as his resurgence in form continued as Antonio Conte’s men beat Southampton 2-0 at St Mary’s on Nissan Super Sunday.

The Belgium international opened the scoring on six minutes with a low drive, which set the tone for a dominant Chelsea display. He has already scored more goals (5) this season than he managed during the entirety of last season.

Hazard ran the show in the free role in a system that brings the best out of his creative talents. His link-up play with Diego Costa was impressive and he tested Fraser Forster with a couple of stinging efforts from range.

Jaïdi wants response at Derby

Show/hide article…

The Rams currently sit bottom of the table with Saints up in 4th, however coach Radhi Jaïdi insists his players must focus on their own game and not the league standings.

“We are expecting a good performance,” said Jaïdi.

“We want to see all of the boys involved doing the basics right and performing well individually as well as collectively.

“I have watched Derby’s last couple of games. They have some good individuals and look to play out from the back, as well as some direct play at times.

“We have a rough idea of what to expect from them and will be working with the boys to prepare them for that challenge.”

Saints suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Manchester City at Staplewood Campus in their previous league outing.

And Jaïdi explained that he would like to see a response from his players on Monday night.

“We had a serious talk with the players,” he continued.

“All of them are aware of what we expect from them and hopefully we will see them bounce back.

“Against Man City we were not clinical up front, lacked movement in midfield and could have done better playing out from the back. These are things we have worked on this week.

“Winning and building confidence is an important part of the boys’ development, so hopefully they will perform well and get the win on Monday.”
