Serial losers: The 25 players who have lost the most Premier League games ever

Show/hide article…

IT TAKES a certain kind of player to stay at the top level for a long time but lose enough games to make it onto a list like this.

“No Manchester United player makes the list - although the two with the most defeats have played for Chelsea and Liverpool respectively”

Not a single player who ever represented 13-time Premier League champions Manchester United makes it onto this list - although the two players with the most defeats have represented Chelsea and Liverpool respectively.

Arsenal legend Sol Campbell and Tottenham favourite Jermain Defoe make the list - but who else joins them?

Southampton 0-2 Chelsea: 5 things we learned

Show/hide article…

Goals from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa ended Southampton’s long unbeaten home record – and lifted Chelsea within a point of the Premier League lead.

The Saints had not lost at St Mary’s since the Blues won here in February. But Hazard gave the visitors the lead after only six minutes when he turned inside Steven Davies to drill home his fifth goal of the season – more than the Belgian scored in the whole of the last campaign.

Claude Puel’s side dominated possession but Thibaut Courtois’s only first-half save came from a Dusan Tadic free kick.

Costa was denied by Fraser Forster when sent through on goal by Nemanja Matic just before the break. The Spain striker made no mistake after 55 minutes when he was given time and space on the edge of the Saints box by Cuco Martina before curling his shot into the top corner.

Forster made futher saves from Hazard and Moses while Charlie Austin had a late effort disallowed for a borderline offside decision.

Here are five things we learned:

Sir Alex Ferguson was wrong for not naming the Blues among his five title contenders.

Four consecutive Premier League wins wihout conceding a goal since the Arsenal defeat have removed any doubt that Conte’s side are in the hunt (and seven points clear of Manchester United).

After another summer of upheaval which saw the departure of another manager and three top players, Southampon’s run of seven domestic matches without defeat came to an abrupt end despite dominating possession.

There other defeats this season came away to Manchester United, Arsenal and Inter Milan.

Under the former Italy coach, Chelsea look very Italian. Solid at the back, then they break forward with speed and class.

Eden Hazard and Diego Costa are back from their sabbaticals and Pedro is the player he was at Barcelona.

But there is no place for Terry in this slick formation.

Claude Puel claimed on Friday that the Dutch defender can become one of the to five centre-backs in the world.

The former Celtic star combines good tactical awareness with the physical strength to compete with Diego Costa. He is better than Dejan Lovren, who Liverpool bought for £20million.

As well as selling Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, Jose Mourinho also disposed of Ryan Bertrand and Oriol Romeu during his second spell as Chelsea boss.

The Spaniard battled away but the England left-back was out of position for the opening goal.

Southampton 0-2 Chelsea - PLAYER RATINGS: Hazard back to his best

Show/hide article…

The momentum keeps building at Chelsea under Antonio Conte.

The Blues secured a fourth successive league win to move up to fourth in the table standings courtesy of goals from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa on the south coast.

Here, Sportsmail’s SAM CUNNINGHAM rates the players from Sunday’s match…

Should he have kept out Hazard’s goal? The shot was low and hard and straight at him but the ball went through Forster’s legs. Did better to get down for the Belgian’s shot close to half-time and surpassed that with the save he made from Costa with his legs. Fumbled a few.

Woeful attempt at a block on Costa’s effort from outside the area. Turned his back and allowed the striker to pick his spot. Poor.

Incredible clearance sliding back toward his own goal with Hazard waiting to finish.

The goals conceded were harsh on the centre-back who put in yet another assured display, but could not keep Chelsea out single-handedly.

A solid performance and was subject to a few biting challenges from players at his former club. Just back from injury and subbed late on.

Key part of Southampton’s midfield that dominated possession for large swathes. Couldn’t find a breakthrough and he was hooked just after the hour.

Pivotal in the holding role in front of Southampton’s back four, in possession and without the ball. Worked hard.

He was at fault for Chelsea’s opener, not tracking Hazard then allowing the Belgian to turn him too easily before scoring. A looping header deflected off Luiz and hit the bar.

Turned Alonso inside out in the opening five minutes in a lovely display of skill. Low free kick tested Courtois.

A few nice runs but not as effective as he has been in recent weeks. His team-mates have come to expect better.

Worked hard and showed some nice touches for the first hour. Had a few half-chances with headers and had a goal ruled out for offside.

Puel should not be disheartened by this performance. They lost the game but Southampton dominated it for large spells and had a few half chances gone their way the score could’ve been very different.

Tidy save to push Tadic’s awkward free kick around his left post. Relatively untroubled.

Azpilicueta has taken to Conte’s three-man defensive system better than anyone and this was another expert display.

Surprisingly well organised right at the centre of Chelsea’s three-man defence. Great game for the often volatile Brazilian.

On the left of the back three and kept Chelsea’s defence tight and always in control.

Played the final pass to pick out Hazard in space to score the opener. Had a powerful shot spilled by Forster and another forced a brilliant save. Defended well.

Involved in the great team build-up to Hazard’s goal. Played Costa through on goal. Another Chelsea player looking rejuvenated back to his best under Conte.

Tough afternoon for Alonso as Southampton targeted his flank. Occasional foray forward had limited success.

Not one of the Spaniard’s more memorable performances. One driving run through the middle almost set up Hazard.

Should have scored when Matic played him through on goal in the first half. What a strike, however, to put Chelsea two ahead, curling in from 25 yards.

Fine turn and finish through Forster’s legs for his goal. Almost beat him with a low shot from the edge of the box. Set up Costa.

A firecracker on the touchline similar to those going off on the horizon celebrating Diwali outside St Mary’s. His players’ performance on the pitch reflected that.

Controlled the game without the need to brandish cards all the time. Didn’t get a major decision wrong.

Hazard is starting to look back to his scintillating best. The goal he scored was his fifth this season already, surpassing the four he scored in his dismal last season.

Southampton 0-2 Chelsea player ratings

Show/hide article…

Eden Hazard and Diego Costa shot down Southampton 2-0 to keep Chelsea on the shoulder of the Premier League pace-setters.

Convincing wins for Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool on Saturday had put the pressure on Antonio Conte’s men as they faced a Saints side unbeaten in five matches.

But they responded with a comfortable victory to stay a point behind the top three and register a fourth straight league win for the first time since April 2015.

Hazard set the Blues on their way with an early goal before Costa sealed the win after the break with a stunning strike.

Forster 6: Nutmegged by Hazard – but made a couple of smart saves later.

Van Dijk 7: Commanding in the air, has grown into a top Premier League defender.

Fonte 6: One important clearance early in second half, enjoyed battle with Costa.

Bertrand 6: Went AWOL before the opener, not at his best against his old club.

Romeu 7: Gritty in the tackle and used the ball intelligently.

Clasie 5: Struggled to impose himself, lost possession too often.

Tadic 6: Some bright moments early on but he faded.

Davis 5: Toasted by Hazard for opener, worked damned hard but limited.

Redmond 5: Frustrating afternoon, unable to use his creative spark.

Austin 6: Unlucky to have late effort ruled out – little service until then.

Subs: Boufal (for Clasie, 61 min), 5 McQueen (for Bertrand, 78 min) 5, Hojbjerg (for Tadic, 78 min, ) 5.

Courtois 6: Alert when he needed to be but largely quiet.

Azpilicueta 7: Polished defending. This back three suits him.

Cahill 7: Kept Austin quiet, good in the air.

Moses 7: Great industry – and an assist - from the wing-back.

Matic MOM 8: Won it well, used it well. Back to his monstrous best.

Alonso 6: Not as influential as he has been of late at wing-back.

Pedro 6: Flits in and out of things. May make way for Willian soon.

Costa 7: Great strike to kill off the game – after missing great first-half chance.

Subs: Willian (for Hazard, 78 min) 6, Ivanovic (for Moses, 87 min) 5, Batshuayi (for Costa, 89 min) 5.

Romeu: Chelsea were more clinical

Show/hide article…

Antonio Conte’s in-form side triumphed 2-0 at St Mary’s, inflicting a first home defeat of the season on Saints, thanks to goals in either half from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa.

Romeu said: "It was a tough, tough game. They are very clever with what they do. Once they scored they defended in their own half and were then coming out.

“We tried to stop them, but after a simple mistake again it’s another goal and against this team they are very clinical up front. We needed to play perfectly defensively and today I think we made those two mistakes that gave them the chances to go ahead.”

Romeu admitted conceding in the sixth minute to Hazard made an already-difficult challenge all the harder.

“It’s tough to start losing that early in the match, but I think we reacted quite well,” he said. "Our first half was very good, with a good attitude and good football.

“We couldn’t have many chances, and I don’t think they had too many either but it was a clever game from them and they were more clinical up front than us.”

Southampton 0-2 Chelsea: Claude Puel says it was difficult after Blues’ early goal

Puel: Early goal was crucial

Show/hide article…

Eden Hazard’s sixth-minute strike set the Blues on course for a 2-0 win, as Saints lost at home for the first time since they were beaten by the same opposition eight months ago.

Puel said: “It’s a disappointment. We played a great team, of course, but it’s hard to take a goal so quickly, in their first action of the game.

“This changed the profile of the game, because after that it was easier for them to play their game, to stay strong behind, with good blocks, and after that to take spaces and make counter-attacks.

“We tried to play a good game, but this team was very clinical today and scored two goals with few chances. We tried to get back, but we left spaces.”

Reflecting further on the early goal, which was later followed by a superb Diego Costa strike, Puel added: “It was very hard. They defended very well every time.

“It’s difficult to play against this team, because they have a good counter-attack and they are good defensively. We tried, but it was difficult to find a solution. Against great players it’s difficult.”

Southampton 0-2 Chelsea: Saints get the Blues

Show/hide article…

Saints saw their eight month unbeaten home record come to an end as Eden Hazard and Diego Costa shot them down 2-0 to keep Chelsea on the shoulder of the Premier League pace-setters.

Convincing wins for Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool 24 hours earlier put the pressure on Antonio Conte’s men as they faced a Saints side unbeaten in five matches and without a defeat at St Mary’s since Chelsea defeated them in February.

But, inspired by Hazard, they responded with a comfortable victory to stay a point behind the top three and register a fourth straight league win for the first time since April 2015, when they were coasting towards the title.

Ominously for their rivals, they have scored 11 goals in those four games and conceded none, with their three-man defence holding firm once again without captain John Terry.

Early goals in each half did for Southampton, with Hazard setting Chelsea on their way after only six minutes.

Seconds earlier Marcos Alonso had been tormented by Dusan Tadic, the Saints winger turning him inside, out and back inside again before crossing for Oriol Romeu to volley over.

But Alonso recovered his bearings quickly, broke forward and found Hazard, who fed the ball out to Victor Moses on the right.

Hazard charged into the area, received the return ball, turned Steven Davis on the byline and from a tight angle drove a low shot through Fraser Forster’s legs.

It was the Belgium winger’s fifth league goal of the season, already beating his tally from the whole of the last disappointing campaign.

With Chelsea showing Saints due respect by sitting deep, the hosts went in search of an equaliser and Charlie Austin headed wide while Thibaut Courtois dealt with Tadic’s free-kick.

But Chelsea were a menace on the break, and Hazard almost had a second when he ran onto David Luiz’s through-ball, jinked along the edge of the area and curled in a shot which Forster got down well to keep out.

Moments later Davis lost possession in midfield and Nemanja Matic played in Costa, but his finish was too close to Forster.

After the interval N’Golo Kante’s raking cross-field pass found Alonso, whose low cross was almost turned into his own net by Jose Fonte with Hazard lying in wait.

But Costa all but settled the match in the 55th minute when he collected Hazard’s short pass, pushed the ball away from Cuco Martina and curled a stunning effort into the far corner.

Saints, to their credit, did not stop probing for a way back into the game, almost found it when Steven Davis’ header dropped onto the top of the crossbar before Austin had a goal chalked off for offside.

Davis says Chelsea’s finishing was the difference

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis says Chelsea’s finishing was the difference on the day as the Blues ran out 2-0 winners over Southampton on Sunday.

Saints’ unbeaten run at home came to an end with defeat to the same opponents who inflicted their previous loss at St Mary’s, but Davis didn’t think there was much between the two teams.

The midfielder accepted, however that the Londoners’ cutting edge was pivotal in the end.

He said: “I think we’re disappointed in the manner that we conceded the goals but at the same time we felt comfortable other than the two times that they scored in the game. They were clinical on the day and took their chances.

“They’ve got a system that they’ve been working on and we tried to find the gaps to play through,” he continued.

“We’re obviously disappointed and a little frustrated in the dressing room after the game which is natural because we hadn’t lost at home this season, but it’s important that we bounce back and we have an opportunity to do that here on Thursday.”

Saints resume their UEFA Europa League campaign later on in the week when FC Internazionale visit, and Davis says the team will refocus quickly.

“It’s a great game for us to look forward to,” he said. “We’re a little bit frustrated with the result out there having played so well, to get beat was disappointing, but we’ve got an opportunity now to bounce back and it’s a great one to have in front of our home fans.

“We’re disappointed today, but we have a chance to bounce back again.”
